47F, SSE 13 mph, foggy.  7:03 AP.  Bit of a breakthrough today.  5 mile warmup, 10 @ MP, 2 cooldown.  Felt yucky and slow during the warmup so I was not expecting good things but when I started the workout I quickly realized it was going to be good.

10 MP miles - 6:31.6 AP.  Splits were 6:31, 6:39, 6:35, 6:31, 6:36, 6:36, 6:21, 6:31, 6:27, 6:28.

Yesss.  I've done 10 @ MP a lot, and this time (65:16) was just over 2 minutes faster than I've ever done this workout.  This equates to about a 5 minute improvement over a marathon (2:55).  The other metric is that I usually run the race 5-10 seconds/mile slower than this workout.  Another indicator for 2:55.  Even the uphill miles were sub-2:55 pace, and the best thing is that I finished on a nice even keel and felt like I could have kept going for awhile longer.

I'm starting to think I under-valued my Houston performance in the wind and rain.  Either that or it just launched me to the next level.  I think the most important thing for me right now is to not jump the gun with my training and start running TOO hard.  This 2-stress-days-per-week is working well for me right now, especially when I keep my easy days really easy like I've been doing.

Great workout Joe! The training plan you have is solid, so I am not all surprised that you were able to do this workout faster. You're making great progress and 2:55 is well within your capability. Like you said, no need to hammer all the workouts b/c what you're doing now is what is getting you faster!

Fantastic, Joe! Time for a breakthrough this Spring!! :)

From Jason D on Sun, Jan 27, 2013 at 08:57:19 from 24.1.80.94

Awesome, Joe. That 12 seconds faster per mile, which is impressive improvement for a 10 mile tempo. The Houston race and everything else you have been doing is why you see the results you do. Fantastic. Like you said, no need to do anything crazy. Just stick with what you are doing and use your indicator workouts like these.

Yeah, I agree with the others. You've got a good plan that's working well - stick with it and good things will come to you. You asked me to throw some of my confidence your way - I did and looked what's happened:) Well done.

Awesome! You definitely want to continue to follow your training plan to the letter. It's working great.

Nicely done Joe. Stick w/ the plan... It's working really well for you. You're making jumps without pushing the envelope too hard... It's coming naturally from the week to week training.

Awesome breakthrough! You are definitely increasing in fitness--like I said before, I think when you go under 3, you will go well under 3!

Will you still be my friend when you're a sub-3 marathoner? :-)

Those 10 miles are amazing. I am really impressed. That's some "next level" stuff, right there!

Thanks Spencer, you are looking strong for Phoenix as well.

From Burt on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 08:54:14 from 71.216.109.214

It's not Phoenix. It's Mesa!!

From SpencerSimpson on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 08:55:55 from 166.147.88.37

They need to rename it huh Burt :)

From Burt on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 09:00:10 from 71.216.109.214

Yeah. Choose a different mythical creature Hyrum! What about the liger?

From SlowJoe on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 09:12:14 from 155.219.241.10

Ligers are real.

Would anyone really run the "Mesa Marathon?" Seems like it would just be a bunch of desert people wandering around...

From Burt on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 09:14:18 from 71.216.109.214

Desert people are mythical creatures.
