7:54 average for this 20-miler -- 10 easy + 10 GMP (target 7:45).

First 10:  1:21:46 (8:11 AP).

Last 10:  1:16:20 (7:38 AP).  Splits were 7:44, 7:41, 7:40, 7:44, 7:39, 7:40, 7:41, 7:38, 7:32, 7:22.

Pretty good run!  It was technically a success but it definitely opened my eyes to how hard it is going to be to go 26.2 miles at GMP.  Maybe too hard.  My legs were really on fire (not in a good way) toward the end.  Of course I went a little faster than goal pace, so that's some of it.  Aerobically, it was ok; my lungs worked a little, but weren't complaining too much.  This time my legs felt way worse than 2 weeks ago.  The faster overall pace, maybe, and the fact that I didn't have anti-inflammatories in my system today probably contributed.  I'm hoping I'll even be able to run in 2 days!

It is pretty important to me not to have a bad bonk/deathmarch to the finish so I am considering starting a bit more conservatively for the race.  Actually enjoying this first marathon is a top priority.

Merry Christmas to all!

Right on!!! You did great. You should change your name to FastJoe. I like your attitude about enjoying your first marathon. The first one is one you will never forget. I've done six marathons and with each one I put more pressure on myself to reach a certain goal time, and each one was worse, time-wise, so I've gone back to having the attitude of just enjoying the races and not even worrying about time. I'm really slow anyway, so it'll be nice to just have fun.

My next big race is the Buffalo Run 50k on Antelope Island on the Great Salt Lake, in March. It's my first Ultra. One nice thing is it's only 7 miles to the park entrance from my house, so I'll get to sleep in my own bed.

Merry Christmas!!!

Thanks DG - yeah I noticed you have run a bunch of marathons; sounds like it is a tough race to figure out. I'm glad for this blog so I can learn from you more experienced runners.

50k seems nuts! I'm still trying to wrap my brain around 26 miles which seems impossible sometimes. You are putting in some great miles though so I'm betting you'll be ready.

Merry Christmas to you too!

26.2 miles still seems impossible to me, too, but somehow I managed to finish all but one. The one I didn't finish was the Park City Marathon last August. I sprained my ankle and had to drop out half way through.

I think it will be not only memorable but very successful! You are ready to do great! That is one heck of a 20 miler. Just know that something different happens on race day and you are able to pull of paces unimaginable when just out on a long run. So, you should be thinking very positively after today! VERY.

Merry Christmas!

You never know what you are capable of! Just go out what feels like slightly holding back the first half, and then pick it up from there. Try not to look at your watch. That is your unsolicited advice for the day.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Dec 26, 2010 at 01:01:17 from 109.70.68.174

Thanks Kelli & April. I'm always asking myself while I run if it feels like I could do this for a marathon, but I never have any idea.

And I'll definitely take all the advice I can get, solicited and unsolicited, so thanks!
