5am, 82F.  Ran a lot more evenly-paced today, 8:30 avg.  No mile was more than 5 seconds off the average.

It took until the 5th mile today for that weird heel thing to crop up, where it feels like the bottom of my heel is taking a pounding - like there's not enough cushioning.  Feels completely unrelated and unlike the injured tendon, but same foot.  Gotta be landing differently or something...ah well, it'll work itself out.

I worked up a general plan of how my training will go for the marathon, mileage-wise, in Excel (nerd).  I'll max out at a 20-mile long run, and do that 3 times; the first will come in early December.  Max weekly mileage of 62 on the weeks where I do 20 (hope I make it).  I think I'm just going to do easy runs and 1-2 tempos/week, no speed work except for the occasional 5K races they have here.  Does that sound about right?

Sounds like an excellent plan! It is very similar to the plan I am going to use for Houston. Speedwork may do wonders for some folks but for me it is a waste of time in marathon training. I get much stronger much quicker from easy aerobic base and MP and HMP tempos. I am going to do a modified version of this plan:

I did this for my spring marathon and felt successful with it

Thanks for the link April, I think I will more or less use that plan, looks good.

Maybe 7:20-7:30 for tempo and 8:00 for MP? Doesn't hurt to train for 8:00 I guess, but I know that's asking a lot to be able to do 26.2 like that when I've never run more than 14 miles at once!

8:00 MP sounds reasonable, puts you at about a 3:30 marathon? with 8:00 as marathon pace then tempo would probably be right around 7:20 pace--whatever you consider your 10 mile to HMP range. I define it a little more loosely as moderately sucking but not all out sucking like a 5k. :)

Sounds good. Week 1 doesn't start until November, leaving some good base-building time. I have it bookmarked, thanks!

Plan sounds good. I think for the first marathon, if you can finish within around 15 minutes of your goal time without blowing up completely and be reasonably strong to the finish then you have done better than 90% of the others that do their first marathon.

I always think of the marathon as two races, the first is getting to the start line and the second getting to the finish line, so it is worth listening to the body during training, especially if you increase the levels of training for the first time
