34F, N 11 mph.  Since I knocked out this week's long run on Friday in Kansas with April, I just did 10 and change today.  It's been 3 weeks since my marathon, and 3 weeks since I've even run a single mile at marathon pace, so I gave it a shot today.  Started out with 6 quick warmup miles around 7:30-ish pace, then a 4-mile progressive tempo, starting at MP and finishing with a true threshold mile (6:55, 6:46, 6:34, 6:27).  It all felt very difficult, which means there's still a ways to go before I'm back in pre-Houston shape.  An hour later and I still feel out of breath.  Not sure whether the right thing to do is rest myself back into shape, or work myself back into shape.  I've tried the rest thing already though.. for 3 weeks.  So I'll go with the latter.

7:10 AP overall.

Follow your heart.

Must go back and read about Friday.

Nice tempo! I'm glad you decided to do that on your own and not with me. I'm still living in tempo fear. After I have gotten this 50K thing over with I will get serious about getting back into marathon shape.

hmmm, I hardly count running almost everyday for the last 3 weeks resting, but that's just me. It all depends on the effort of the marathon I think. I laid it pretty much all out there at CIM and it has taken me until recently before I started feeling good again.

Do you guys think it's much more of a mental thing than physical? I get pretty down/disinterested (don't know the right word) after a race and even after a big roping competition. I fought it all last week after after my race on Sunday.

From flatlander on Tue, Feb 07, 2012 at 11:37:04 from 198.207.244.102

Interesting question IJR. I think it is both, definitely a mental letdown after a big race. But there is a physical element which has to be respected. I have stopped worrying about it, I just try not to schedule marathons too close together.

Burt - I always do...never the brain

April - I probably should have been in tempo fear too, because anything sub-7 feels terrible lately.

dh - yeah, kind of settling in for a long recovery myself

IJR - maybe partly, yeah - that, and maybe mentally getting used to pushing the pace and getting uncomfortable again.

Flat - yeah, that's my problem with the timing of the Houston marathon -- it crunches in on both fall and spring marathons leaving you stuck without much of a break anywhere. I agree there's something physical to recover from as well.
