treadmill. intervals between 12 km/hr and 14 km/hr for 5 miles. Comfortable but worked in pushing up HR to ~160. Time 37:11. Definitely recovered from my slump last week! :)

Good work this week so far. Now we are starting to see some progress. I think a 3:30 is a reasonable goal for the London marathon. Maybe you could even run with Maria

.

Do you have any plans for a half-marathon race? Your performance in a half-marathon in about a month from now will be a very good indicator how to pace yourself in London.

I'm doing Hastings (which I've done a couple of times before) on 11th March.

Are you SERIOUS about 3:30!! I think my treadmill times might be misleading as I don't seem to be going beyond 8-9 min miles in the great outdoors. It is the great unknown for me. My "secret" target is to break 4 hours, but I'll be happy to be under 4:15 to be quite honest.

I agree that the 1/2 marathon will be a good measure, although I assume that times will be slower as I will not have rested the day(s) before. ie if I took the week off before the 1/2 I could probably blitz my previous best time.

My main hope is that because where I live is VERY hilly, that when I come to run the relatively flat london course I will get a better mile rate. that certainly applies at my favourite race (Great South Run, Portsmouth 10 miler) which is lovely and flat and I go faster :)

Sasha, I don't think we can run together, as I'm not doing London (didn't get in), I'm going to Rotterdam on 15/4.

As for the half, I'm running Fleet, also on 11th March. I thought of Hastings, but picked Fleet due to later start time and the fact that I know (sort of) how to get there by train.

Sinj, are you doing 8K race in Hyde Park by any chance next Sunday (25th Feb)? I'll be there, it'll be interesting to see what I can run in 8K now.

Not doing the hyde park one, no. I have a young family so am trying to limit the time I am away from home at the weekends as the training is biting into my out-of-work time enough as it is.

I've got Hastings and maybe the Kingston Breakfast run on 1st April (16m). I'm like you in that I'm intreagued to know if my short distance times will increase dramatically after all this training (when rested)...

this weekend is a big test - 7m Saturday, 15m Sunday.

There is not that much of a difference between treadmill and outdoor running. For some people treadmill is faster, for others it is slower. But we are talking no more than 5-10 seconds per mile, not minutes. If you can run for 5 miles at sub-7:30 pace on a treadmill and not feel like you are racing that distance, you should be able to do something comparable outdoors, and that, with another couple of months of training, could very easily put you in the range to be able to run 8:00 pace for the marathon.
