Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

12 total. Back to the daily 2 mile tempo. Decided to do it completely by feel without looking at the watch except with 100 meters to go just to make sure I have an idea of the time in case the button press at the finish goes wrong. Got 12:19. Jacob did it just ahead of me in 12:14. For some reason he was scared to go too fast when he did not have intermediate splits.

The hamstring bothered me a little.

Joseph did 4 miles, William 3, everybody else their usual distances. Benjamin did 5 K on his course in 16:42. He got a quad spasm again at the end.

12 total. Repeat of yesterday, except both Jacob and I were faster on the tempo run. He got 11:32, and I got 12:05. The good news is I thought I was headed maybe for 12:15. Joseph moved up to 5 miles. William still at 3, but he was able to run 24:02, earlier he was averaging closer to 8:30.

16 total. Did a 6 mile tempo run with Chad. 4 down, 1 up, 1 back down. Ran the first 4 completely by feel. Was surprised to see 24:40, thought it would be maybe 25:20. However, the next mile was the time to pay our dues - uphill and into a headwind. We ran 7:05. Then turned around and did 6:05, but the first quarter was 96 as it was hard to recover from the 180 turn.

I was happy with how it went. Maybe the deadlifts did something for me.

Jacob had a good run as well. He had 22:51 at 4, then 6:40 for the uphill windy mile, then 5:40 coming back down with 35:11 total.

Benjamin struggled today with the spams again, but was able to do 7.5 K in 25:22 + 2.5 K in 8:16.

Joseph did 6, William 3, Stephen and Matthew 5, Mary 1, Bella 0.5, Leigha 200 meters.

Sarah did her usual 6 miles.
