Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

16 total. Joseph and Jacob did 12, Bonnie 6, William 6, Matthew and Stephen 5, Mary 1, Bella 0.5. Bella sore throat has gotten bad enough that she could only run 0.5 today. Mary was fine mostly, but we had her run reduced mileage just in case. A bit less for Matthew and Stephen as well.

Joseph and I paced Bonnie in 3x1000 with 200 recovery jog at the Orem High track. She got 3:42, 3:46, 3:49. Joseph joined Jacob half way through the last interval and ran 3:25.

Jacob did 3:08, 3:23. Then I had him rest a bit longer and focus, and he ran 3:05.

Jacob and I also did a mile pickup down the canyon in 5:44. William and I did a pickup on the hill at the end of our run in 56.9. Also I did a fast 100 during a stride in 16.2. Felt very awkward, like I was about to stumble and fall.

Day of rest. Fast Sunday. Went to our ward, then the Russian-speaking branch. Met two sisters there - Sister Willis and Sister Wilson. I told them in our mission we had Elder Burger and Elder King. 12 total. Did a 4 mile tempo down the canyon playing a rabbit for Benjamin. It was windy and wet, for some reason it makes it harder than it ought to. I ran 24:53, Benjamin got 21:28. The gaps were right, we were just both slow.

Jacob did 3x1000 on the track with 200 recovery in 3:10 each - in spite of the wind.

Benjamin and I got 16 miles in. I think Joseph and Jacob got some decent mileage as well, not sure how much.

Matthew finally finished ahead of his "girlfriend" Oaklie. We have a joke, mostly promoted by Dad, that if a girl beats you, she is now your girlfriend.

The course was accurate, Teren wheeled it.

Overall, I am happy with the results. Some kids could have done better, but even those, considering their recent struggles did quite well.

Matthew looked like he still could use more iron. William had better attitude, but he is still struggling. Stephen had some muscle pain again, probably as a result of anxiety, but at least he was running 7:20 per mile instead of 8:00 or slower. Mary and Bella were not used to racing on grass, but still ran respectably.

Benjamin got through the run without a spasm. What is interesting is that he averaged 5:22 on grass today on a flat course. On Tuesday he did a 4 mile tempo averaging the same pace DOWN the canyon. For another data point, I averaged 6:17 on the same course, and on Tuesday I averaged 6:13, not a big difference. There is something really strange about the head winds and the cloudy weather in the canyon. For some reason even running downhill we slow down to a loop cross country course pace!

I was happy with my time today as it was faster than what I ran in Winter Series last year, and only 8 seconds slower than Murray Fun Days.

Jacob had a very good result. He was close to his flat 5 K PR on the roads. Joseph also had a good result for what he was showing in the workouts. Lately he has been struggling with knee and muscle pain, and had not been able to complete many of his workouts.

12 total. Did a 4 mile tempo down the canyon in 23:58. Played a rabbit for Jacob and Benjamin. Benjamin did 2x4 20:49, 20:44. On the first one he hit a really bad spasm with the closing quarter in 91. But he went ahead and did the second interval nevertheless. There was headwind by then, but this time he did it without a spasm closing with 5:07 mile. This was a very interesting result that nevertheless goes with his half-marathon experiences when he magically recovers from the spasm and starts running a normal race pace.

16 total. Did a 3 mile tempo down the canyon in 17:37 (5:58, 5:56, 5:45). Joseph ran with me and kicked faster in the last 0.25, got 17:27. Chad fell back around 1.75 and finished a bit under 18:00. Benjamin and Jacob rabbit-chased us with a 1:30 handicap. Benjamin ended up with 14:37 (4:54, 4:53, 4:50). Jacob was tricked into a PR. He ran the first mile with Benjamin, then fell back a bit, but caught up to us before we got to 1.5. Then he ran with us to 2 miles, recovered, and then kicked in 5:07 achieving a PR of 15:29 (4:54, 5:28, 5:07).

I had Matthew, Stephen, and William run only 4 at an easy pace to reduce the chance of getting sick.

Mary hurt her toe, could only run 1 mile. Bella did 2. Leigha fell asleep early, did not run.

This year's race featured the presence of the 2016 1500 meter Olympic Champion Matt Centrowitz. Interestingly enough, he did not win the race. I believe he and Mike Ottesen did a friendly tempo run of sorts, and finished together in 19:34, but Mike's chip ended up registering about 0.1 earlier. Third place went to Payton Riggs with 19:46, Brian Schultz 19:50, and Dustin Bybee 20:02. Then Benjamin with 20:27.

I did not think I had another sub-24:00 in me, but I was happy to find it. Benjamin got confused about when the race was supposed to start, and got there 10 minutes prior, so no proper warm-up. When the temperature is around 30F, you pay for it in particular, and he did. Still 20:27 is a decent result, and on the plus he did not get a spasm.

Sarah is starting to struggle more with the race effort when she does not get enough sleep. She had a hard time pushing herself today. But still averaged close to 9:00.

Maddy ran her first race. She was really worried about being able to run the full distance, but her preparation paid off and she was able to do it at sub-12:00 average.

Joseph had a decent race, course PR. Big improvement from last year in spite of his challenges with irregular heart beat and muscle pain.

Jacob cracked 22:00 for the first time on this course. His endurance is still lagging, though. With his 3 mile speed he should be running this course in a low 21:00 or maybe even a bit under.

William goofed off today running barely fast enough to beat Bonnie. As a result Maya Bybee earned the status of his running girlfriend :-)

Stephen put in a lot of effort during the race, but his lack of preparation in training prevented from winning just it did last year. He was disappointed. Hopefully he will remember and try harder over the next year.

Matthew did not have any serious challengers, and once he had a commanding lead he let his focus slip. He still won but I believe he had another gear that he could have found had he dug deep.

Mary and Bella ran in separate heats, and both achieved decisive wins. I was not sure if Leigha would win her race, but the field was not as strong as it used to be, so she won fairly decisively as well.

16 total. Did 2+4. First paced Matthew to a new 2 mile down the canyon PR of 11:58. He started out in 6:04, but then with about 0.75 to go William caught him in the rabbit chase, and he started fighting back. He fought so hard that William gapped him by only 7 seconds from that point. So Matthew closed with 5:54 last mile, and the 0.75 in 4:23.

William got a PR as well - 11:21 (5:45, 5:36). Bonnie also got a PR - 11:39 (5:45, 5:54). Joseph paced William, and Jacob paced Bonnie.

Stephen did the first 0.75 with me and Matthew.

Then Jacob and I ran 4 miles in 23:59 playing a rabbit for Benjamin. By then we had some headwind. Joseph ran the last 2 miles with us. Benjamin did 2x4 20:54, 20:59.

Bella was sick, ran only 1 mile. Mary hurt her toe and could not run. Leigha did her usual 0.25.
