10 mile tempo.  This was definitely a great workout for my wounded confidence of last week.  It is okay to have a bad week everyone!!  1 mile warmup and then I went striaght into the tempo.  I ran the exact same route as two weeks ago and here is the split comparison.

2 weeks   6:55, 6:51, 6:44, 6:44, 6:33, 6:39, 6:45, 6:37, 6:36, 6:30

Today      6:45, 6:47, 6:37, 6:42, 6:30, 6:42, 6:43, 6:37, 6:30, 6:22

Not a significant difference but I ran it 39 seconds faster today and it felt really controlled until that last mile where I kind of threw down the hurt.  Physically I felt really good.  My left hamstring started to bother me a bit towards the end but then again I was basically sprinting the last half a mile.  2.3 mile jog back to my house after the tempo.  Oh how I love that nice jog after a hard tempo!

PM:  2.5 miles very easy.  Planks & pushups

Great workout Rachelle! Remember when this was your tempo pace? http://rwardle.fastrunningblog.com/blog--Got-my-LR-in-and-was-only-5-minutes-/03-23-2012.html

From Jake K on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 09:48:18 from 155.100.226.191

If the end result of a "bad" week was running 4 seconds faster per mile on a long tempo run (and feeling good doing it!), than I would say last week wasn't a bad week at all - it was probably exactly what you needed. Very good workout - keep the confidence super high because like I always say - you can't fake these long tempo runs... you nailed it once again.

From Rachelle on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 09:58:39 from 159.212.71.77

Awww very interesting Andrea. It is very exciting to see progress.

Jake - I think an easier week last week was exactly what I needed and I am just glad I wasn't stupid and didn't try to push too much on fatigued, tired legs. A lot of credit for that goes to everyone on the blog advising me to be smart. Sometimes it is good to actually listen to advice. :)

From Jake K on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 10:03:49 from 155.100.226.191

Yep you might have gotten the workouts in last week, and then been 40 seconds SLOWER on the tempo today... and that's not the direction you want to be moving towards 2 weeks.

You did the smart thing - be proud of that, and next time you feel worn down, look back on what you did today as a good example of how it can be beneficial to back off every once in a while.

Very nice Rachelle! Looks like you are making some great progress! What an exciting year for you..and to come:)

From JulieC on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 13:07:52 from 67.41.190.1

hey Andrea that is MY tempo pace!! Rachelle you better run subthree or I might NEVER have hope for myself!! :D

From scottkeate on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 14:20:51 from 216.49.181.254

Solid tempo effort, Rachelle! My hat is off to you! Well done! I like your positive perspective as well.

From Carina on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 14:37:20 from 204.15.86.83

You are rockin!! Way to go!

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 15:36:51 from 67.172.235.55

WOW, Rachelle. You really are on fire this year! Your hard work is certainly paying off. We should go do that 20 miler that we did from Julies house again (and by WE, I mean you). You would have no problem keeping up! NO PROBLEM!

TOU is going to be AWESOME! Do you have any goals (that you want to speak out loud, anyway)? I am gonna have to get you my number so I can get a text when you are done, I will not be able to wait very long to find out the results!

From Bam on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 15:42:24 from 89.204.234.237

Great tempo Rachelle. Like how you threw down the hurt. The jog after a workout - when you've done the business - is tops.

From NatalieK on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 17:50:33 from 24.2.101.184

Seriously, I know everyone else has said this but you my friend, are rocking it. I cannot wait to see what you do at your next marathon. You're going to blow the Utah Valley Marathon out of the water!

From Rachelle on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 18:47:51 from 66.7.127.115

Thanks so much everyone! I am trying to stay cautiously optimistic.

Kelli - Funny that you would mention that 20 miler. I always have friends asking me how to get fast and my answer: Run with people that are faster than you! I'm pretty sure I can credit holding up the caboose with my "fast friends" all winter/spring to my major gains in fitness. As far as goals for TOU go I waffle everyday. I am definitely not trying to be a slave to sub-3. I think it would be really cool to run 3:02 since Boston was 3:22 and UVM 3:12. But at the end of the day I will be happy with a PR!

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 19:54:07 from 67.172.235.55

3:02 sounds like a great goal. I know you have that in you for that course for sure. No pressure, if it is a good day, all of this amazing training will pay off in a big way!

From Smooth on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 20:47:40 from 75.165.251.74

Super awesome tempo run, Rachelle! Yes, your hard work is going to pay off at TOU! Wow! YOU ARE FAST!!! :)

From fiddy on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 21:29:34 from 97.117.93.211

Rachelle your reasoning with the 10 minute improvements each time is really flawed.

Also, if you don't want to be a slave to 3:00, why make a goal time at all? Why not just run?

From fiddy on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 21:41:02 from 97.117.93.211

Just to clarify, I think it would be better to go into the race without any concrete goal about what you should do. Some of your workouts suggest that your marathoning ability far outstrips any race you've had so far. In my opinion, this means that any goal you make is just going to be a hindrance on your performance.

I'm sure that you are more than capable of pacing yourself through the race so I would recommend just running by how you feel on the day.

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 29, 2012 at 08:31:24 from 155.100.226.191

I think the 10 minute improvement in every race is a pretty good plan! :-) You'd be hitting 2:42 just about in time to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

Seriously, though - you won't really know how you feel until you're out there. I think you should have a goal "range" instead of specific time/splits in mind. A lot of people on this blog are very confident that you can run really, really fast - that's because you're training have been absolutely fantastic and you're improvement curve has been like a direct line towards the sky.

From Rachelle on Wed, Aug 29, 2012 at 09:07:44 from 159.212.71.77

Thanks James! What you're saying actually makes a lot of sense and I think you and Jake are both right about not necessarily having a concrete goal. The truth is I really don't know what pace I'm capable of sustaining for 26.2 miles so I might as well just run the race and see what happens. And even though the 10 min improvement idea is incredibly flawed, stupid, and maybe even unrealistic I still think it would be kind of cool! :D

From Kam on Wed, Aug 29, 2012 at 09:20:31 from 68.66.163.179

I like Mr. Moore's advice. 3:02 is doable, to be sure, but your workouts trend as much to 2:52. If you control yourself in the first 14 miles, just run that like you are sleeping, then you could really "put the hurt" on the rest of the course...and I know how much you love the negative split.

From JulieC on Wed, Aug 29, 2012 at 11:13:51 from 71.35.249.251

you know that Rachelle is just taking over for me right???? as I was falling she was climbing--- so I handed her my baton!! Voila-- a smart fast twin runner 18 years my junior!! She is all over the subthree on her own time. No doubts in my mind. So let it fly controlled and unleash the ending my friend. Can't wait to drive up with you to Idaho Rachelle!! : D. Fun times!! Is Idaho ugly? I keep getting comments as such. Odd. The pictures look nice to me.

From Kelli on Wed, Aug 29, 2012 at 17:33:39 from 67.172.235.55

I agree with all of the above. ;o) You are a strong and smart runner, you KNOW what you are doing. Your training shows that this can for sure be a banner marathon. BUT I never go in with an exact goal, just a range. That was kind of what I meant when I asked. I think 2:52-3:02 sounds like a great range!

Keep feeling good and I hope and pray that TOU hits you on one of your fabulous days. You have been on fire this year and I have LOVED watching how fast you have gotten. I can now worship the speedy ground you run on!

NO PRESSURE, right? Just go into it confident.

From MichelleL on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 18:14:51 from 168.70.21.27

Nicely done. What is the race you are doing?

From Rachelle on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 09:28:06 from 159.212.71.69

Michelle - I am running TOU Marathon!
