Wow. What a crappy run. Although I hate to make excuses, I think yesterday's loss of blood was the main culprit, combined with dehydration. Since I felt fine physically all day, I just assumed (bad plan) that I would be up to a hard run today. I definitely wasn't.

Ran Dogpound AT (or at least attempted to), warmed up grass loop, then .5 on the run, then got into the AT part. From the get-go my legs just felt leaden and burning like they do in hard sprints, like there was only fermentation and no respiration going on in my muscles. Ouch. Pushed through it for the two downhill miles (6:37, 6:33), legs got less and less responsive and more and more hurty as I went. Then as I started going up the hills by Dogpound, my vision started getting black around the edges and I was panting and pushing and going about 7:30 pace, so I decided passing out was a bad plan and stopped for a second, then took it way easy for the last 1.5 of the run. Even going slow, it was really hard. Argh! Still, I am already hating myself for not finishing the workout. What an idiot whiner I am. (DST 287.4)

Ruth I think you are exactly right about the blood donation and your bad run today. I learned my lesson 2 years when I gave blood 2 days before a 10K race and had an absolutely horrible race. In my experience it has taken me 4-6 weeks to get back to my pre-blood-donation fitness level after giving blood. I've had numerous other runners tell me similar experiences. Of course donating blood is a great thing for a person to do so I hate to discourage anyone, but in my case I avoid doing it anytime close to an important race.

I hope that the adverse effects wear off before Nike Ntls. and Footlocker West Rgnls! (Nov. 17 and Dec. 1)

I'm not a doctor, but I think passing out is bad.

I've donated blood several times and have always felt back to normal within 10 days to two weeks. So given your race schedule I hope the same will be true in your case!

While it is true that it takes about 6 weeks for the body to replenish blood cells lost through donation, I don't think your fitness suffers for that long. I always felt physically fine after donating, but I did feel a bit tired the next day or two, and only ran easy. Good call to stop the AT run! I suggest running easy until you feel absolutely fine, then try some workouts. You should be fine within a week. Remember to hydrate and eat well, too.

I ran a Marathon PR once after donating blood 10 days earlier. Of course I always wonder what my time could have been if I hadn't donated...

But I always feel drained the next day. (sometimes 2)

Hope you don't kill over on your thursday night run!!!!
