Drove down early from Pine Valley to run the race, I'd gotten a little less than 2 hours of sleep, so during the race I was basically running on pure adrenaline and a cookie. Warmed up with the team a bit over a mile, stretched and lined up for the race - hoping to win it, esp. since they give good prizes for overall winner. My race strategy the whole race was to stay with Erica Schramm (who beat me at this race last year) and out-kick her at the end, however, she was just a titch faster the whole race and increased the gap between us by a slight margin over the course of the race. So she beat me. Dang it.

I did run a good race overall, though, beating last years' time of 19:31 by 34 seconds, so that was satisfying. Also, had I gotten more sleep and been less sore (my right calf esp. has been sore since last Friday) and worn out from yesterday's AT workout, I think I would've done a bit better. Cooled down barefoot a bit less than a mile after racing, then drove back up to Pine Valley - yippee. And that DD spike is not my favorite at all. And my legs are kinda (really) hammered from going from three 10-15 mile weeks in a row to a 40 mile week. (DST 202.8) (DD spike 19)

Maybe I will come down and run that race next year. I'll make a deal with you, I'll take out that Erica Schramm if you take out Logan and Coach Holt!!!

No, just keep it up and you will get that girl next time. Way to take off 34 seconds from last year!

Good job Ruthie! Pretty good to only get beat by Erica Schramm...she's pretty speedy. Especially with everything you've been dealing with.

I was looking at it and she beat me by 78 seconds last year and only by 34 seconds this year, so if I'm here for it next year and improve the same as I did this year, I should beat her by 10 seconds... bwah ha ha ha ha!

Ruth - good work. Read this with Coach Holt. To reduce your injuries, and get ready for sub-11:00 3200 next year - remove all speed work right now, and start running 8 miles a day EASY. No faster than 8:00. Do not speed on those, be patient. Do that for two-three months. And make it matter of religious zeal to get to bed on time. Once 8 miles a day becomes too easy, make it 10. The longer you can spend building base, the better. Once 10 miles a day at 7:30 - 8:00 pace starts to feel like you are not even training, start adding tempo work, but still no short intervals. Then get in a race and see what you've got.
