Phoenix Marathon 2015

Friday after lunch, Blake and I headed to Phoenix.  We stopped and picked up some new running shoes at the Sketchers Store, went and picked up our race bibs, and then checked into our hotel.  Blakes wife and kids met us at the hotel and we then headed out to get some dinner at Sizzler where we ate plenty of carbs.

After maybe my best night's sleep before a marathon ever, we got up around 4am, got ready and went and caught the bus to the start.  It was high 50s, cloudy and a real strong head wind.  After the Star Spangle Banner which included some fireworks, we lined up for the race.  My calf was feeling pretty good after all the rest over the last 2 weeks.  I hadn't even tried to run for about 5 days, so I didn't know if I'd even be able to go once the gun went off.  To my pleasant surprise, I started off pain free and settled into a real nice comfortable pace pretty quickly.  I had settled in with a few other guys and a couple gals running my pace.  We were runnning mostly single file since we were heading right into a strong wind much of the way.  I had a really nice mental focus and rhythm going and was thinking how great it was that I was running so well and it was feeling so easy when I passed the 11 mile marker and BAM, might calf did it's thing.  I stopped immediately getting a few looks from those I'd been running with, and I knew my day was over.

I didn't even attempt to run another step and I'm glad I didn't.  I walked about 20 yards to the aid station that was right there and asked to see how I get picked up to be taken to the finish.  No one had any idea, so I borrowed a voluteer shirt (mostly becasue I was getting really cold) and started cheering on the other runners.  I made friends with some of the voluteers after about an hour and a half of cheering when one of them told me they had to leave and would give me a ride to the finish.

He was really nice and we had a nice conversation on the way.  He lives near the Gilbert Temple and I was able to talke to him about the importance of temples and how families can be together forever because of the ordinances performed in the temple and other things that are a lot more important than me having finished the race.

I am greatful that I was able to run a marathon paced 11 miles.  I averaged exactly 6:45 per mile for those 11 miles and felt great.  I'm also greatful for the experience I had after stopping.  I really feel like I am in shape to go sub 3 right now and I figure after a few weeks rest from running, I will be able to pick up this huge running base and fitness and pick right back up on my marathon training, so I signed up to run Utah Valley Marathon on June 13th, last night.  I had a blast this weekend in Phoenix and I'm excited to head up to Provo to run in June.

Blake ran a 3:25 and change getting a 23 minute PR!!!!!!!!

Bummer about the calf, man. You were really dialed into that pace. When you pick this up again, you will not miss a beat.

Wow It's great that you can look past your own agenda and goals and see what God had planned for you in the Big picture. I really admire you and I have no doubt a sub 3 is in your future.

Sorry to hear the news. Glad that you have such a positive attitude. Rest up and continue!

Good attitude, Rhett. Wish I would have seen you.

Your positive look at your race experience should be taught in running school. Sorry about your calf but, you ran 6:45 for 11 miles with it. Get rested and healthy like you said you are ready to run sub 3 marathon for sure let's just get that calf healthy.

Bummer on the race, but it looks like the day want a loss. Seems like there's always a silver lining. Heal up and get ready for the next one!

Our mom's chatted the other day and my mom told me a little about your race. Bummer man. Good thing you stopped when your calf acted up. It sucks to be really dialed in and have something like that happen. Get some treatment and give it some good rest.

From Hillbilly Runner on Thu, Mar 12, 2015 at 12:15:53 from 173.191.121.34

Hey Rhett How's the calf doing? I know you haven't been sitting around. Are you giving that bike a workout?

From Rhett on Thu, Mar 12, 2015 at 14:33:29 from 24.121.0.8

Thanks everyone for you kind comments. Dale, my calf still isn't up to running.

HBR, you are correct. I have been biking, swimming in the lake (it is warm enough here to do that if I wear my wetsuit), weight training, and some elliptical. I just don't feel like posting any of it until I start running again. I will have to live vicariously through all the running you guys do.

From Yasir on Sun, Mar 15, 2015 at 19:38:02 from 99.20.240.157

I hope you are enjoying or the riding out there any updates on the calf?

From Tom Slick on Tue, Mar 17, 2015 at 12:02:33 from 168.179.158.193

Come on back Bro-Rhett, we need to hear what's going on in your life....

From Rhett on Tue, Mar 17, 2015 at 14:31:09 from 24.121.0.8

I'll be back soon Slick. I did a 1 1/2 mile run this morning before my 2 mile lake swim. Calf felt good. I'm heading up to Brian Head to do some skiing for the second half of the week. When I get back, I'm sure I'll be fully back into running again.

From Smooth on Thu, Mar 26, 2015 at 15:34:11 from 71.219.158.9

Hey Rhett! I read your race report when you first posted and I was in Houston. I didn't know what to say cause I felt so sad at the time despite how amazingly positive you were so I didn't post anything then.

Now, I re-read your report and just want you to know how much I admire your positive attitude. I love that you talked to the volunteer who gave you a ride down to the finish, about the Temple and all things that are of eternal value. You are a wonderful example to me of a true disciple of Christ. There really are more important things to our eternal life than finishing a race.

I admire you for cheering fellow runners for over hour and half when you could not go on to finish. I know that feeling; I had to DNF after 6 miles of the Ogden Marathon in 2012 due to re-fracturing my foot and stayed to cheer others and a month later drove friends to the UVM and cheered on the sideline with a boot on. It's a bittersweet experience. Only runners who've been there know that feeling.

Finally, I love that you don't dwell on the injury with self-pity but with positive outlook. You are amazing! I love and miss you and Doone heaps. Hope to see you at Utah Valley in June! :)
