I decided I had been patient enough and it was time to try and run again. My last run was July 4th and my cortisone shot was 22 days ago. I decided it was best to do it on the TM so I could stop at any point and not be pressured to keep going to get home. I had no idea what to expect.

I started off really slow and the first 1/2 mile was pain free. As I move the pace to around 9 min miles I could start to feel some tightness but not pain. When I dropped the pace to 8:30 min it hurt so I quickly went back to 9 min pace. I ran a slow 3 miles. 27:40. I finished in much better shape than my last run, but I was disappointed with how slowly I had to run to keep from hurting and even at the slow pace there was definitely a tight pulling feeling with each step.

I really don't know what else to do. I've been so good for a long time. I haven't even been doing the elliptical for the last few weeks. I have another appointment with the podiatrist this coming Friday, but he seems to be at a loss. Maybe it is time to try a new doc. If I don't start logging some miles soon I won't even be ready for Boston next year.

Dang, Rhett, I was hoping to hear some good news. I guess it was better than your last run, but still. It seems like we're all falling apart.

We sure are, your knee, Jeff and Kathie's backs, my foot. I'm sure others are aching as well. I've never had a set back for this long before. It sure is frustrating.

From Teena on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 00:17:04 from 67.177.20.13

Rhett,

Don't feel frustrated. It sounds like it went just like my first few runs when I began coming back.

I would have kept the run shorter, maybe next time stick with 2 miles and try to stop BEFORE the pain starts. I know that is so so so hard to do ... but so so so worth it.

My first several weeks back at running I was rating my tightness level ... because that is exactly what it was ... genuine tightness ... more than just a little tight ... it was tight (I think you know exactly what I am talking about). It took a few weeks for that to go away but it seemed to make improvements every few runs or so.

Don't worry about pace right now ... that'll kill you for sure. When you are trying to get rid of the tightness you want slow and steady. If you push the pace everything will tighten right back up trying to protect itself. Slow and steady for a while. The pace will come back, I promise ... no need to rush it right now.

I think you are okay ... I hope you are okay. Don't run tomorrow!!!!

It's going to come back ...

You have been so patient ... hang in there for just a bit longer and take this slow.

You're incredible!

Thanks Teena, I was going to try and run a couple miles tomorrow, but I'm going to take you advice and wait until Monday. I hope your right, and that I start to recover soon.

From Teena on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 00:26:01 from 67.177.20.13

I hope so too!!! But what you described reminded me so much of my first runs after taking significant time off. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed. :)

Yeah, listen to Teena. She knows what she's talking about after 6 months of trail and error. lol

From Kathie on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 15:08:37 from 207.155.176.10

Good Luck Rhett. I am with Teena on this one I wouldn't throw in the Boston towel yet you still have time just don't push it.

Keep a good attitude.

Rhett,

I'd listen to Teena. You are being very patient and most importantly you are paying close attention to the foot as it is healing. There's plenty of time for Boston training. Most of us are still trying to run a BQ marathon this Fall. It is best to EASE back into it. I know it can be frustrating right now; but so worth it! Have faith!

How is the foot today??

From Rhett on Mon, Aug 03, 2009 at 00:30:03 from 74.32.223.209

Teena, thanks for asking. I just got done massaging my foot with a frozen water bottle. It feels numb right now, but it was bugging me a bit before that. I am going to try and do 2 slow miles tomorrow morning on the TM. I'll have a better idea about how it is after that.

From Kathie on Mon, Aug 03, 2009 at 11:03:01 from 207.155.176.10

I hope the run goes well tomorrow!

From Teena on Mon, Aug 03, 2009 at 11:21:23 from 67.177.20.13

Hmmm ... can't figure out if tomorrow is today or if tomorrow is tomorrow ... my time display thingy is 2 hours off ... so did you post Sunday night or early early early Monday morning???

Either way ... can't wait to hear how it goes. Maybe you should be taping your foot. Kelli has been taping hers and it seems to be helping a bit. Just a thought.

From Rhett on Mon, Aug 03, 2009 at 12:29:33 from 74.41.249.102

I posted Sunday night. What is Kelli taping her foot for? Is she using that new tape stuff that promotes healing?

From Teena on Mon, Aug 03, 2009 at 12:30:42 from 67.177.20.13

I believe she is using Kinesio tape. She is having PF issues.

So ... did you run?
