Today I went to the local 3 mile fun run to test out my foot and my fitness level after about 6 month of little running. It was a nice course run down the parade route right before the parade. We ran one mile downhill then 1 mile back up the same hill then the 3rd mile back down to the finish. I had no idea how I was going to do. We got started and I ran the first mile in 5:50, the second back up the hill in 6:40, and the final back down again in 5:38. My garmin reported the last mile a bit short so I don't know if it was a true 3 miles. Anyways total run was 18:08 so I'll take that considering my current lack of running.

I got 4th overall and 4th in my age group. I had no shot at 1st or 2nd with finishing times of 14:53 and 15:15. I had my sights set on third, but he maintained about a 200 yard gap on me the whole race and I never seemed to close any ground. There is another local race in 2 weeks, a 5K on a much tougher course. I hope to get out there and run around 19:00 if I can get in a little speed work between now and then. My foot only gave me some minimal pain right around the end and my podiatrist was there racing, so I talked to him a bit. He said to come in and have my orthotics adjusted.

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! I am in awe that you can pull something off like that considering the past 6 months! WOW!!! I wish I were you!!! Very nice.

Btw, how do you like your orthotics? Are they hard or soft? I'm thinking about using my custom orthotics again, but they are hard. Maybe I should double check with my podiatrist and see if they still fit properly. It's been about 2 years since I have ran with them. But ... I obviously have some biomechanical issues that might benefit by using them again. Who knows. Everyone has a different opinion about them.

Thanks Teena, to answer the orthotics issue... I'm not sure. A few years ago when I had bad plantar faciaitis they really helped me out a lot. I got refit in new ones a few months ago and I'm not sure if they help me or hurt me. Since I started with the KT tape, I haven't been wearing them. I totally get and tend to agree with the idea of running with less support, but some people just need the extra support. My orthotics are hard and I'm wondering if they are inflaming my nerve which I believe is entrapped and causing my pain that is why the podiatrist is going to try and adjust them for me.

excellent race- you didn't lose any fitness it seems! now for some proper trainging and you'll be hitting some scary fast times.

Great job, Rhett. Did officer Kuch win again?

Very nice especially given the limited training. I would also benefit from some speed training and am so impressed with your training last year at this time. Recently I think all your cross training kept your aerobic base.

Rhett -- But you are still running in them, right?

I'm thinking about going back in and getting re-fitted. Here is my problem: I am always looking for some quick fix. What is wrong with me? Keep me on the straight and narrow, won't you??

:)

Hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend.

Burt, Dan Kuch got second. It is kind of funny cause it ticks him off that someone is faster than him. The first place guy is a local kid that has been off at college and runs cross country at the collegiate level.

Well Dan wants to be an Olympic qualifier, but I think he's got a way to go. And I don't know if all those muscles are going to get him there. That is funny, though. He shouldn't be too mad. Havasu was perennially better than us. I attributed it to superior coaching. Or maybe there's something in the water. Probably the coaching. My best cross country race against them was when I took third place up in Bullhead City against their JV. And one of them still beat me.

Nice comeback. Doesn't look like you lost too much while you were injured.

Rhett!!! WOW!!! I'm SO HAPPY to hear you're back on the "racing saddle" again. That's AWESOME! Bet it felt good to be running FAST again after 6 months of almost zero running and painful foot.

That's a might fast race! Keep up the good work!
