Participate in 5k and 10k races.
Personal:
I started more dedicated running and racing in my thirties. Eventually I developed symptomatic bradycardia and SVT which required a cardiac pacemaker implant and a cardiac cath ablation. It has taken a long time to get back to running consistently again. Counting my blessings and trying to remain more balanced with fitness.

10.2 mi before work, in the dark the whole way
7.4 mi during lunch hour, legs were stiffer, but managed a faster pace
Hills program on the TM during lunch hour. Slowly built up pace first 30 minutes and then 5 x 1-2 minute climbs at 6-10dg during each 5 minute segment. Progressively faster pace down to 10K last 5 minutes.
