Went to see Dr. Lyons, it as good I did as it appears I have inflamed the tendons on the inside of my left ankle and it could degenerate without some prompt actions. It is a very strange injury, due to the fact that I have very high rigid arches that cause me to supinate, particularly the left foot,  causing stress on the inside. I also have a strange extra bone down there (from the x-rays) which I didn't know about, that kind of interferes with the tendons ruinning intot he foot. Well, anyway, I am out for a few days while I see if this thing responds to rest, ice antinflammatories and then start some physical therapy with a running and orthotic evaluation  next week before I am cleared to run again. Dr. Lyons thinks I can still run Ogden, I am not sure what the impact will be for a guy my age losing a week of training with my sub 3 hour goal for the marathon. I will have to check with my coaches, Paul, Cody, Jon, etc.

I guess I should have had the foot evaluated a long time ago. Thanks to Paul Petersen for getting me on top of this and suggesting Dr. Lyons, it is obvious he knows feet and running. So now I will eat big macs and fries and see how much weight I can gain while I "rest". It's been a good run, I gave it my best, and maybe it's not over yet.

Sorry to hear about the foot, but now you can at least name the pain and have treatment/recovery options. Hang in there and take the approach you outlined and come back running healthy.

Thanks for the support Jeff, you guys are awesome, I will keep myself motivated by watching yours and others training logs!

Missing one week of training when you are 10 weeks out? No problem- still on track for your goal. Cross train if you can (bike? water running?) and don't get fat. But get your foot better and then jump back into it.

Do you need to give up skiing?

Also, where is Dr. Lyons? Does he take IHC?

From paul on Wed, Mar 04, 2009 at 15:16:12 from 75.162.221.204

I'm glad your visit with Dr. Lyons was fruitful. He's by far the best dr. I've seen in Logan, simply because he's so attentive and knows his running. (Jon, he is at Canyonview Orthopedics, in the Budge Clinic @ IHC). He is the USU sports doctor as well, and there was an article in the Cache Weekend magazine about him a few weeks ago.

Keep your chin up, and hit the elliptical and arc trainer hard, if you have access to them. You can maintain great fitness with just the elliptical, and you can do "intervals" and "tempos" on them as well. With any luck, you'll come back stronger than before, with a chip on your shoulders and fire in your eyes.

I've done PT at IHC several times. I found it very tedious, but it always cured my injury. They have a running lab there and can analyze your form.

Paul and Jon, thanks- I have never done the elliptical or arc trainer, I will see if they have something in the HPER I can use- I assume that is less stressful on the foot joints? The nice equipment in the fieldhouse is for students only, we poor faculty can't use it but maybe I can sneak in or bribe a student I've had in class. I was thinking of biking to work and back in the interim.

Yeah, Dr. Lyons is definitely the right guy-knows his stuff and clear he cares. There is also an article on him in last week's Cache magazine if you haven't seen it.

Not much I can add that hasn't been said. "Pool running" helped me maintain fitness last year. I would highly recommend that if you have access to a deep pool. I can tell you how to do it if interested.

I hope the recovery goes fast so you can give me a run at the mileage board :)

From Jon on Wed, Mar 04, 2009 at 17:10:14 from 138.64.2.78

Yeah, Scott, I think you jinxed yourself into an injury by trashtalking with Cody about the mileage board...

From redrooster on Wed, Mar 04, 2009 at 18:31:30 from 129.123.3.31

trash talking? moi? OK, get way ahead of me on the miles so the jinx is off!!

pool running... sounds interesting- except I hate water as I get cold due to 0% body fat- but might be worth a try!

I think marathons just ain't my gig, I am designed to be a 35-50 mile a week runner. I would have just stuck with the Bolder Boulder 10K as my "big" race this year, but my brother in Boulder will be out of town Memorial day so I thought, hey here is the year to do a marathon. Oh well, I will try riding my bike tomorrow for fun, if I can find my air pump.

From wheakory on Thu, Mar 05, 2009 at 14:32:50 from 134.50.89.55

Did you get an MRI done. My pain is kind of on the side of the heel, but not underneath just on both sides. One side hurts more than the other.

From redrooster on Thu, Mar 05, 2009 at 14:53:10 from 129.123.3.31

they took some x-rays, unfortunately I can't have MRIs because I have a cochlear implant in my head and the MRI would rip the sucker right out. I can have a CT scan if I have to, but I am hoping with a few days rest I can ease back onto it again. My problem is just the inside left foot above ankle, probably because of a real nasty supinatioin problem.

Hope your foot gets better fast!

From JD on Thu, Mar 05, 2009 at 20:53:10 from 32.176.81.26

Sorry to hear about your foot. I hope the condition responds well to the icing, PT etc. I was looking forward to our little race up the yearly mileage board. Hope Ogden's still in there for you. I'll be running the half, looking forward to meeting some bloggers.

Good luck!

From RivertonPaul on Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 18:38:07 from 67.42.27.114

Any update? Hope things improve.

From paul on Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 08:21:03 from 75.162.221.204

Hope things are going well for you. How is the PT?

From redrooster on Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 22:36:33 from 71.219.142.244

Paul and Paul, thanks for the notes, went to PT today- after more exxamination things may be a little worse than I thought, with some shin splint problems to boot. All linked to a tendon running down the interior of my lower leg, into my toes. Inflamed in the foot and against the shin bone. So I have orders still not to run for awhile though I haven't in a week. My guess is Ogden is now out. Maybe I can get it back together for TOU in the fall? Kind of bummed out, I should probably cancel my Ogden registration so someone on the waiting list can get in.

Next week when the university opens again I will start hitting the elliptical and maybe take a stab at water running?

Paul (Riverton)- I will watch for you to take care of business in Ogden for me, we will have to run a different race another time!

Thanks guys, Scott
