I ran part of this North Logan-Hyde park canal trail Paul keeps advertising. Started at 3100 north and ran to 600  south in Hyde park and back. didn't wear a GPS watch so I kind of gmapped it. Looks like about 2.75 miles out and back.  good trail, but a little rough in spots, especially since I was wearing the five fingers. 43:30 so about a 7:54 pace I guess. PM 2.5 about 16.

Oh, I should have warned you. They dredged the canal after they drained it earlier this fall, and dumped all the muck on the trail. That is why it's so rough in some spots. Very muddy when it thaws out, too. Before they did that, it was quite smooth and wonderful. But we'll beat it down into smooth submission again.

By the way, you ran to 600 S in Smithfield, not Hyde Park. You can keep going north on the trail for another 1.1 miles, until you get to the golf course. It turns to pavement for about 0.4 miles, then back to dirt after you cross 300 S.

Paul, thanks, I was wondering why there was all those mud piles on there. it is a nice trail and would be really great if someone graded it. maybe we can borrow a backhoe or something?

Rumor has it, they are thinking about piping the whole canal, and putting a paved trail over the top of it. Pie in the sky though.

This time of year, you can always run in the canal itself. It is nice and graded, thanks to the recent dredging.

I hope if they do that they don't pave it but leave it as a dirt or a gravel trail, like the shoreline trail. too much asphalt here already.

good idea on using the empty canal, I may try that!

How often do you run in FiveFingers? Have you ever had any chaffing or problems with them? I'm curious to know other people's experience, but not a lot of people use them. My only problem with them so far happened when I was running around a circular track indoor and they rubbed weird in some spots.

What's up Red? Did your toes fall off after running in the 5-fingers or are you running and not blogging or are you just so busy trying to write final exams that you can't run?

Aaron, before I started marathon training in earnest I was running two days a week in them, and the rest in light shoes. Then I had to switch to real shoes as my calves just couldnt take it. I like the FF, I htink they are good for strengthening the feet and ankles and conditioning muscles when the weekly load is reasonable, but once I started doing 20 milers I had to abandon them. I plan to go back to two days a week in them now that the marathon stuff is behind me.

Bonnie- my toes are still sort of intact but it was indeed cold in those FF! but my main problem is indeed the end of the semester, yikes, and then I leave for a meeting the day after finals next week and have to prepare a talk for that. so blogging and running have been kind of on the back burner... bummer...
