Anyone know how you modify the training categories to add "cross training" so I can keep track of my ellipticals?

Anyway, I hit the elliptical for the first time. I have no idea what I was doing and the programs made no sense. So I just got on and pedalled, played with the resistance a bit but kept it pretty low and easy. So I "ran" at about 80 rpm for one hour, keeping my heart rate at about 150. Paul- if you are reading this- any suggestions for modifying that? Seemed like a decent workout anyway. My feet were kind of numb when I finished but that went away fast-maybe these spenco arch supports I have been wearing at doctors advice?

OK- my foot is starting to feel better and the tendon is not as irritated down there. I have one really, nasty sore spot on my left  interior of shin, right on the muscle against the bone, just in one place, probably 1/3 to 1/2 the way up my calf. If you touch it just right, and not hard, it induces huge pain, the type that makes you scream and hit the roof. Does not seem to be improving.  But doesn't hurt when I run, but the PT guy said it is a shin splint injury and not to run til it improves. Has anyone experienced anything similar, and any advice on how to deal with it? I wonder if it is knotted, inflamed or something worse? Why just in the one spot-is that good or bad? Anyone out there who can help me out?

Sounds like about what I do. If you want, you can "go backwards" just to break things ups and use some different muscles. I also like to progressively ramp up the resistance to keep my mind occupied.

Paul, thanks, yeah, it is pretty boring, but a decent workout. any thoughts on that tender spot on my inside shin? How is the enbrel going? I think I am going to start taking some supplemental calcium to go with my 1000IU vitamin D, probably just TUMS (generic brand).

My tendon issues I had took a combination of rest, ice, TENS unit, and TIME. I could only speed up the healing process so much. No impact exercises were a must for me.

I have no experience with shin splints if that is really what it is. I kind of wonder... Odd for a guy like you to have shin splints.

I know nothing about shins. Have you tried ice massage on the spot?

I think the Enbrel is working pretty well. I haven't taken NSAIDs since Wednesday, and I would normally be in much more pain than I am now, whenever I go off them for this long. I think my peripheral joints are doing better too.

I think I heard somewhere that Tums is actually bad for you. Probably because it would keep your stomach acid low or something. Might want to check into that. I just ordered some of this stuff:

Cody- I dont know much about shin splints as this is my first experience, just relying on what the PT guy (Nathan) said. this surfaced after I met with Dr. Lyons so I haven't discussed it with him. I go back to PT wed. so will ask more questions.

Paul, thanks for the tums heads up. I have acid reflux anyway and take prilosec for that so maybe best like you say not to mess with my stomach acid anymore, I do now recall tums long term is bad. I will check out the product you suggested, thanks.

This is how you change mileage categories:

My feet go numb on the eliptical as well.

Hang in there and get healthy and get back out running after you get over the injury.

Jon- I am afraid that might blow up my computer- sounds tough....

Jeff- good to hear I'm not the only one with numb feet on that thing, numbness always makes me nervous. Few more days and I am going to ease back in to running if I can!!

From Jon on Fri, Mar 20, 2009 at 09:00:24 from 138.64.2.76

Yeah, I've blown mine up a few times but Sasha can bring it back.

Just so you know, Paul and I are now above you on the mileage board (just barely).
