dang it!! in the theme of the blog I had my own dog attack today. ran from USU up to green canyon and then on to the bonneville shoreline trail. Some stupid guy was on the trail with two dogs off leashes (against the law). when one of them saw me running towards them it came after me barking and took a couple nips at me. It got a couple hits in but I don't think it broke the skin. So I yelled at this schmuck when he got his dog back, really let him have it, but stupidly I didn't follow my own advice, which is that I should have hauled that sorry sucker down to the police station and filed a report and had him fined for having dogs off their leashes. Part of the problem is I don't wear my cochlear implant to run, so I can't communicate. So it is easier just to yell and leave, and I was also a half mile down the trail. But now in retrospect I have had enough. I am going to pick up some pepper spray at cal ranch and put it in my running jacket. next dog that attacks me gets a face full of that.

I hope this happens Saturday so I can see it. Just don't spray me if I happen to sneak up on you and surprise you from behind.

just don't bare your teeth at me or bite me and you should be OK.

Hopefully the guy learned his lesson. Did he seem apologetic?

How bad is your hearing without your implant? How well does it work?

Burt, I have a small amount of residual hearing in my left ear, so I can hear very loud noises, but no ability to discriminate speech (the hearing loss is in the "profound" region). But I can communicate a bit with a high-powered hearing aid in that ear by also watching lips. I lost my hearing too late in life to learn to read lips properly or to sign. the right ear is implanted with the CI, so that ear has no hearing whatsoever as the cochlear structure has been removed. The CI device itself works great, very clear hearing when I am wearing it, but it is hard to run with, and sweat can short circuit it, so I tend not to run with it in. I almost never wear the hearing aid as the sound from the CI is far superior.

At mesquite, I wore my hearing aid (not CI) to the starting line so I could hear the instructions and gun, then carried it to mile 11 where I gave it to my wife. So from mile 11-26 I had no ability to hear anything. It was still hard to hear anything at the start.

None of this bothers me particularly, except when I get into an altercation like today. The guy was probably apologetic, and I didn't swear at him or anything, just yelled at him to leash his dog, but it gets frustrating when you can't have a two way conversation while running when things like this happen. So I tend to get very frustrated.

I could carry my CI on runs, but it is a bit bulky, and I am afraid I might lose it or damage it I may start carrying my hearing aid for emergencies though. I do wear a med alert bracelet with info about the CI and medical implant in case of an emergency.

I did not know that about you. That is very interesting. I looked up cochlear implant on Wikipedia after I read your entry. I never even knew they existed.

Interesting story. I've let dog owners have a piece of my mind for dogs off leash too. VERY irritating. Lets hope your outburst was as effective as a citation at least for this dog owner. I'd sure rather pay money for a citation than be yelled at by a guy who my dog just bit. Especially if it was a guy who wouldn't even listen to me and hear my apology. ;)
