Need some sort of tempo run today... roads look really icy and snowy... the question is- risk life and limb to run on the icy roads, or hit the little 220 yard indoor track and dodge PE kids, while trying to keep my sanity feeling like a hamster on it's little wheel running 64 mind-numbing laps...... I am going to have to think this one through a bit......

OK- Neal Legler called and agreed to pace me out on a 7-8 mile tempo. I thought I could hold a 6:26 pace like I did last week in San Diego. I thought wrong. Four miles in at 6:32 and I started getting fierce intestinal cramps. Had to stop at 5 miles having averaged 6:34. Rested a couple minutes and dragged out another 2.3 at 6:41. I told Neal to just leave me at that point so he could get his workout, we then met up and jogged an easy 1 mile back to campus.

The cramps... strange.... but then I did have baked beans for supper last night.. am wondering if that caused my trouble? Or the fact that I did the tempo after three days putting in 29 already, which is alot for me in 3 days... I guess I am just not ready for prime time.

Do what I do and run easy miles on the treadmill instead....Bag it all...

Aren't you guys supposed to be motivating me as my role models not tempting me to bag it..... man I was hurting today. You ever had intestinal cramping like that on a run? Do you think it was the baked beans for dinner last night???

I wish I was back in San Diego.... man that was easy running down there.

Did you make the beans yourself? Hopefully they weren't out of a can!!!

I would blame the beans unless you eat them regularly. I eat a ton of pinto beans and have become immune but if I go a few weeks without (e.g., in England where they are hard to get) then I have the same reaction.

Tip: soak the beans overnight and then slow cook them before eating them or converting them to baked beans.

Doubleplussgood tip: "For the bean town marathon eat plenty of beans."

Steeling myself to run in the ice and snow - suffering from Berkeley withdrawal...

You are climbing the mileage board far to quickly....

David, good old Bush's baked beans with brown sugar right out of the can. not exactly fine dining. I don't think I will use those to carb load before the marathon. still feeling sick... blech...
