Well we'll see if I did more harm than good with today's run....time will tell the truth. Felt some mild discomfort during the run, but nothing seemed to get worse. Came to the office and sat in a 1.5 hr meeting then was able to ice the knee for about 20-30 minutes then had to go to Austin for another 2 hr meeting... I bought a knee brace an wore it for about 4 hours but I think it irritates the knee cap more than it does any good. I have no pain when I walk but I did notice going down stairs it hurts a little. Oh well, we'll see tomorrow if it's better or worse...?

We'll see. I think you are walking (or running) a thin line by pushing the pace like that at the end. But that's just me, you have to do what you have to do.

Yea...I know I'm falling into the same old mentality most runners fall into... Afraid to slow down or simply quit for a while... :( I'm just really aggravated that I run for a year without any problems and "bam" just before my first big race...%!&%#! I need a better game plan to try and get back on track before OKC.

Whaaaa...Whaaaa...Whaaaa

Don't you hate to hear someone whine... :)

Have you tried Glucosamine? I swear it was the cure for my runner's knee (along with some quad exercises). Takes a couple weeks to start working though. Good to see you getting some miles in. Hopefully we both make it to the starting line in one piece.

Hey Slow Joe,

I haven't tried Glucosimine. Can you get that over the counter? Is there different types? I'm ready to try anything (except do nothing). Pretty frustrated right now...I was really hoping it was nothing and I could just run it out. Hate to whine in public.

IJR?

Yeah, it's in the section by the vitamins in the grocery store (just called Glucosamine or Glucosamine Sulfate). It won't help right away but it has the building blocks for cartilage and helps keep the joints lubricated. Some folks will say there's no scientific proof it works, but I read a study where it helped a huge percentage of people with runner's knee. And it started working for me after a week or two (I still take it daily) although I can't prove it wouldn't have gone away on its own. Strengthening the quads is also supposed to help the kneecap track correctly which is the root cause.

If you can get to a Costco or Sam's you will save big compared to HEB or pharmacy prices.

I was looking at your blog to the left: Here is what I see: first 40 mile week in October, first 50 mile week in 1/1 - it took you 4 months to move up to 50 miles. That's good. Now, first 70 mile week 2/11. Then a bit later you got your "first injury." I see a correlation there. I can't imagine any coach out there who would recommend adding 20 miles a week over a 6 week period. That is a 40% increase in workload. That's huge, especially given the types of miles you were running, e.g. fast quality workouts and a couple races thrown in there. If you were running all easy miles this might be achievable, but even then it just might be too much too soon. That you did not get injured sooner is a testament to what great shape you are in.

I think DH might be on to something. It took me several tries and a few injuries over the course of last year to get to the point where I could hold 70 miles per week, and even now some weeks I feel like it is too much. Something to think about at least.

Thanks you guys for all the advice.

I went to Sams last night and got some liquid Glucosamine...hopes it works (quickly)! Right now I think OKC is off the table...
