Today was a little tough. I still didn't feel 100% from the stomach bug yeterday, but I really didn't want to miss this day of running. I went to the high school track to run my tempo run for the week. According to my RLRF program I was to run 1 easy, 2 @ 6:45, 1 easy, 2 @ 6:40, 1 easy. My actual was 1 easy, 2 @ 6:49, 1 easy, 2 @ 6:49, 1 easy. My second and third easy miles had some walking in them and although the two sets of tempo were exactly the same overall the mile splits were up to 15 seconds off. Nedless to say I was struggling and just gutted it out to get to 6:49. Hopefully next time I do this I'll feel better and the results will be better. It's kinda funny, I went a little later in the morning and all of the HS track team was out running. I'm sure they're thinking...what's this old guy out killing himself for! I realized how much lighter on their feet they seem to be than me..even though I was pounding it out faster than most of them :-) Overall I'm not sure I'm in the right trainning zone for the RLRF program, I think my long run in a couple of days will tell. I hope I feel better by then!

Pretty amazing that you were sick and were able to run that fast! I've started going gray at 17! I'm almost white now....I wish I felt like it gave me prestige! ha!

Steam,

I think I'm well now :-)

It's funny, when I was young I assumed old people felt old...Now that I'm old I sure don't think that way :-)

How are you doing? I hope better and with patience :-)

If it hurts and you are struggling then you are in the right training zone. The workouts are short but should be extremely tough - that's the whole point of the program. Good job.

Great running, especially coming off a stomach bug! So, is your updated schedule on the left your upcoming race schedule? Good to see you tackle a couple Halfs before jumping back into the full ... although I am not sure I would do a half the weekend before a full! I know Austin is close to you, maybe you can get them to move the date back a week! :)

DH,

Thanks, this is the kind of encourgment I need :-) Doing this on my own I sometimes wonder if I'm doing it wrong.

JG,

Yes, this is what I'm thinking but I probably won't run the 5 mile race on the 5th and I was thinking about running the Livestrong as a training run (really slow)... just to do it and since it's so close to me. I would like to find something good to run around the first of January but haven't found anything yet. I don't think next weekend's Half will be a PR for me, I don't think I'm in good enough shape yet so maybe it will just be a fun run.

From JG on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 14:09:58 from 71.59.27.33

I wouldn't worry about about a PR, you are just starting to ramp things back up. Then again, you might be surprised at your leg strength with all the cycling you have done! Maybe try a tempo run at 7:15 pace ... if you can hold it, you will get a PR! If not, don't worry about it, it will be a great longer training run. How is your hip, any flare ups? Whatever you do, don't set back the progress you have made on that front! :) You have all of next year to update your PR's!!

That's still a really good workout when you can spend 4 miles at a fast pace and hard effort like that. I had an entire bad week of running when I was sick, so you will probably find the paces come easier when you are 100%. Nice running.

From I Just Run on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 15:41:24 from 67.79.11.242

No hip issues so far (knock on wood)! My left hamstring, where it attaches to the hip on the backside, has been a little sore after some of these faster runs. But, this is not unusual as I've always had some soreness there (old age or old injury thing I think). With a day of running rest in between each run it clears up. I'm just going to run this upcoming race by feel, maybe slow the first couple of miles then a couple of 7 -7:15 miles and go from there. The route is fairly hilly so I know that will affect the mile paces quite a bit.

Nice workout! Great job getting it done even though you weren't feeling 100% I agree with JG that all those biking miles have probably kept you pretty fit. You might surprise yourself next week.
