Wow … I surprised myself today. Although I planned and wrote a pace chart for a 3:25, I really didn’t think I could do it. I have not been pleased with my inconsistent and what felt like slow pace training. Little did I know I would have some race magic and actually pull it off today!

Although this is a small race it was very well run with lots of support, good food and nice metals. The weather was great for me at 52 degrees to start and 65 at the finish.

Below I have posted both my actual paces and HR and my race plan paces and HR. I can’t believe they are so close.

To top it off …. I WON 2ND IN MY AGE DIVISION…!!!   3:25:32 (The old guys are getting slower and slower. :-)

I planned to start out very conservative and at a 3:30 pace. I charted it out to run this for the first half and then pick up the pace to target 3:25 if I was feeling good and my HR effort was in check. I started well behind the 3:30 pacers and as usual they went out way too fast. I finally caught them about mile 15 and blew by as I stepped up my pace. I did run with a young man for the first 18 miles but I knew after the half that he was not going to hang with me. He faded fast at 18 and I said goodbye. I tried twice, once at 16 and then again at 21 to try and really drop the pace but decided both times it wasn’t going to work so I dropped back to a more managed effort. Overall I might have been able to squeeze another minute or two out of the time but no more than that. The last two miles, although the times weren’t too bad, were pretty hard. I didn’t have my usual kick at the end.

BOSTON QUALIFIER by almost 15 minutes!  … And now I think I can hit 3:16 with the right training! :-)

The best part is after about 5 minutes I was walking around like I had just run a medium long run. Tired but not much pain. My legs and even my feet feel good!

From I Just Run on Sat, Mar 03, 2018 at 14:23:57 from 107.77.100.55

Sorry, driving 3 hours. It was good! I surprised myself.

From Tom Slick on Sat, Mar 03, 2018 at 14:28:17 from 174.148.41.102

Outstanding time today! Way to put it all together through adversity to success! I think while the irons hot you might want to consider a sub 3 hour marathon!

From Tom K on Sat, Mar 03, 2018 at 18:14:30 from 73.27.120.162

Oh man, that time is awesome! Well done! Did Yasir write this detailed race report for you?

From Dan on Sat, Mar 03, 2018 at 20:10:58 from 74.140.172.126

Excellent!! And Yasir more concise Tom.

Look forward to the full report!

From Russ on Sat, Mar 03, 2018 at 23:00:09 from 67.138.48.135

Congratulations! You really killed this race. I think none of us are shocked, as your training was consistent, and your training paces were excellent. So glad the weather cooperated and you could hit your goal time. 15 minute BQ? Wahoo!!!! Great job, well done.

From Jason D on Sun, Mar 04, 2018 at 12:16:41 from 73.144.91.168

Congrats on the substantial BQ. From the looks of things you ran the right effort. Nothing quite like the feeling of running your fastest miles in the end of a marathon.

From Rhett on Sun, Mar 04, 2018 at 19:30:45 from 66.185.237.66

Wow! Congratulations IJR. You made your plan and you nailed it! Great race. After all you went through with your foot, it is amazing you were able to return to such great form. You are an inspiration to us all.

From I Just Run on Mon, Mar 05, 2018 at 16:42:28 from 199.38.187.9

Thanks Guys,

Tom S, I know you're kidding about a sub-3 marathon but I do now think I can break 3:20 again!

Tom K, Hipe this is now enough detail. The more I write the dumber I sound to myself.

Russ, Yes it was truely a surprise. I guess it had been so long since I ran a marathon I'd lost my confidence.

Jason, Thanks, that's how I've always tried to run all my races. Trust me, it's not always easy.

Rhett, Thanks, and thanks for the GREAT tapering advice. You know what I was planning and it wasn't what you suggested. I'm really glad I took your advice!

From Yasir on Mon, Mar 05, 2018 at 19:22:50 from 99.20.240.16

Sorry for the late congratulations. Wow you are back to your old speedy ways. Really this was a great run specially how fast you finished and still had more in the tank after. You could definitely break the 3:20. Really glad that you are fast and healthy again rest eat but not too much

From Tom K on Wed, Mar 07, 2018 at 09:02:42 from 47.206.60.114

You really knocked this race out, man! Only 2 miles run at 8+ minutes?! Again, I say Awesome!

From I Just Run on Thu, Mar 08, 2018 at 13:07:02 from 107.77.85.130

Tom K,

Yeah, I was really disappointed in those two miles!
