WoooHooo .... Look everyone I actually ran today! The weather was so cool at 57 degrees I decided I would just go ahead and try running a couple of miles this morning. It was 60 degrees yesterday and I about froze riding my bike. I thought, if my hip doesn't hurt, I might get warmed up running before I ride the bike. The first part worked well, I did get warmed up but when I got on the bike it was even colder since I was really sweating. Anyway, I basically did a triathlon this morning: Run 2, Bike 14 and then jumped in the shower :-)

The run was great! My hip didin't hurt at all. I did feel a small twinge but I wouldn't call it pain. It was pitch black when I ran and I didn't even bother looking at my watch as I ran but I just kept thinking... "Why am I breathing hard, hasn't all this biking done more good than this?". When I got to my first mile turn around I turned on the light and glanced at my watch... Sub-7:00 ... no wonder I was breathing hard! I just decided to keep the pace and finish the overall run. My legs felt heavy but man...! they turned over well.

8/29/2011 (Also Biked 14 Miles)
Mile Time HR HR % Ran Out & Back
(No Pain - I could only feel a little twinge)
1 6:58:00 147 76%
2 7:08:00 161 85%
Total 14:06:00 154 80%
Pace 7:03:00 58 Degrees

Then I transitioned (I think that's the word) to the bike. Rode out Old Zorn road and looped back around my normal 7 mile loop making a total of 14 miles total. My legs are still tired from all the biking (and they are feeling fat and heavy around the thighs). I'm thinking eventually the sorness will go away and I hit another gear on my speed :-) The transition from the run to the bike didn't seem to have that much of an effect on my speed. I was a little slower today but I believe it was more because of my two rides yesterday...especially the evening ride with the BIG boys.

9/6/2011 (Morning Ride - Ran 2 Also)
Miles Time Speed HR HR % Out & Back to Old Zorn Road
14 47:18:00 17.8 140 71%
14 Total 17.8
Miles   Speed 140 71%
57 Degrees - I Was Cold Again!

Sorry for such a long report today but I am excited that my hip is actually really close to being healed.... And the fact I ran 2 miles at a pretty fast pace (for me!).

(If you've never read the entire book of Job, you should do so. It is very inspiring...!)

Job 1

6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

7 The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

…Satan tested Job…..

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship

21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” 22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing .

…Satan continued to test Job over and over…

Job 42

12 The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part.

That's great news! I guess you'll know more about how it did by tonight and tomorrow. That's a switch to hear that it's too cold out.

Wow great news on the hip!! I love that last transition of your Triatholon to the shower!! If you did about 400 laps in your pool you'd be at about 1/2 mile ;)

Great news about the hip, glad to hear it. Your legs are gonna be itching to run, but take it easy to start out with.

Nice going on the ride last night as well.

Holy Smokes, Batman! That's a fast run~!

I have a friend from my running group who was a 3:05 marathoner and then he got hurt. He took 2 months off from running and started biking to keep fit. He ran Boston immediately after after not running in those 2 months and he PR'd. Afterwards, he kept biking and running and now he's on track to break 2:50 marathon based on his last 18 mile training run. He says biking took him to the next level.

I want to start biking one day when I have more time. I don't know about triathlons though... I think the swimming portion would be the least appealing for me... making a shower the swimming portion is more my style!! :)

Keep it up! Your hard work is going to pay off BIG TIME, I know it!

Dave,

Time will tell. I felt great after my run and even after my ride, I came to work and sat for a couple of hours and got up and "ouch", I had some "discomfort". I wouldn't call it pain but it was definitely noticeable. Now, this afternoon it feels fine again. I think I'm at the limit so I'm not going to push it too hard.

Joe,

Thanks, I'm ready to run ... even some real "hills" :-)

Eckroll,

I think I'll just practice holding my breath in the shower. I used to could hold my breath for 5 minutes :-)

Lindsey,

I was happy with the run outcome, even though it was short.

I've decided that biking is equivalent to "Easy Miles" running (ration is about 4 to 1). No matter how hard you ride you just don't get the sustained effort and HR that you do while running. When I get back to running I'm thinking about using it on most of my long/easy days instead of running.

From JG on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 12:27:05 from 208.54.64.207

IJR, I think Lindsey points out a great example. You may be surprised by the benefit of cross training & having fresher, stronger running muscles when you actually run. You may not hit the same HR zones, but there are a lot of other benefits. One of which I believe is achieving a faster running turnover. Don't gear the bike too high, and work on fast cadence on the bike, this will help you increase your running turnover, which is the best way to increase your speed.

Good advice, thanks JG!

From JG on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 12:44:12 from 208.54.64.207

When I am in a Spin class and the instructor tells us to maintain 130 rpm, I think man this is insane, then I just close my eyes and pedal as fast as i can, imagining passing runners in a race. Since you are actually on a road bike, I don't recommend closing your eyes, but you get the idea! :)

From I Just Run on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 12:49:28 from 67.79.11.242

I need to work on that. My biker friend calls me a "pusher" and not a "spinner" since I stay in the high gears most of the time. I guess I'll have to get a cadence monitor for my bike :-) I know that I typically run at about 175 strides per minute. I monotered that for a while back when I was running... You know someting to think about on those long runs!

From JG on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 13:03:56 from 208.54.64.207

175 is good, 180 will make you faster without having to improve your fitness! :)

From Steam8 on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 13:33:02 from 166.70.55.77

YAY! YAY! YAY!!!! I'm so glad you ran two without pain!!! You are on the mend!!!!
