Well I didn't quite hit the Sub-20 mark today but it was a decent effort.

20:19 beats my old PR by 50 seconds.

The race had 111 runners, several high school and a few college kids. I wasn't familiar with this course so I got there a little early and ran the course as a warm-up before the race. I thought it would be more hilly but it really just had some rolling low hills.

The first mile of the race has a decent uphill climb for the first half mile. I started out about 10th in the pack. At about the half mile mark I was running about a 6:15 pace but decided I needed to slow down a little ending the first mile in 6:27. The second mile was mostly flat. The main pack had run out in front of me but three guys were starting to fade from the main group. I passed two of them on this mile. I ended up running a a 6:34 on this mile and thought that was good enough. The third mile was almost all an uphill climb, ever so slightly, and just enough to make me slow down a little. I didn't really realize I had slowed to a 6:44 pace until I hit the 3 mile marker and saw the time on my watch (uh..oh...I'm in trouble). I did pass another guy or two on this mile. No one ever passed me in the race so I was kinda running alone the whole way. You couldn't see the finish line until right at the 3 mile mark and at this point I started to kick running the last .1 in 32 seconds. 20 seconds off my Goal but still a 50 second PR. I'm sure I can hit my goal on the next 5K.

I'm thinking the warm-up was a little too much since I was dripping with sweat at the end of it. It was about 75 degrees and very humid. My legs didn't feel like they had much spring in them after the warm-up.

3 Warm-up miles and 1 cool-down mile.

Callie (my daughter) also ran today and won 3rd in her age group. She took it very easy and was just running for fun... Her legs are getting much better.

Great job IJR! Missing your goal by 20 seconds can probably be attributed to the warm temperature, and also the longer warmup in warm temps. More importantly, you're moving in the right direction! Congrats to you and your daughter.

Congrats! Less humid conditions and you will certainly hit your goal, but a 50s pr in 5k is quite good!

From Rye on Sat, May 26, 2012 at 17:55:27 from 174.27.117.224

Wow! Nice job Preston. You are speedy. You will break that 20 minute barrier soon.....7th overall ...not too shabby and 1st in age group! See ya on the sports page.

From SlowJoe on Sat, May 26, 2012 at 18:18:29 from 69.131.141.92

Congrats on the PR. You'd have easily been in the 19s if it was just 5 or 10 degrees cooler. I know what you mean about pouring sweat before the race even starts -- kinda makes you wonder if you even need to "warm up" huh?

From Jody on Sat, May 26, 2012 at 20:06:43 from 99.127.13.81

Congratulations on the PR! The heat and humidity are brutal, but I keep telling myself they make me stronger - I hope. Great things are in store for you this summer.

Looking at RLRF you should be at a 3:17 marathon. Take in to account the warm up and humid conditions.....I'm thinking that you should run a 3:15 at the TOU in September! Super race today!

If you do I'll supply the oxygen... I think that camelbak makes a nice pack for oxygen tanks....:)

Congrats on your PR! 50 seconds is awesome!

Thanks everyone. I happy with the time. I know I can do better with a little more speed training, a little cooler weather and a little flatter course. I'll try to find another race in the next couple of months and hopefully break the 20:00 mark :-)

From DLTheo on Mon, May 28, 2012 at 12:57:43 from 76.28.161.119

I happy you happy :)

If you find a 5k in a couple weeks that is not as hot and/or flatter I bet you take 20+ seconds off your time.

From Dave S on Mon, May 28, 2012 at 15:15:37 from 72.86.143.232

Congrats on the huge PR! 50 seconds in a 5k is huge! A little better conditions and you'll have that sub 20.

Nice run in the heat. Are you doing TOU this year? I'm thinking of doing it now that I washed out on my summer marathon with this injury.

From I Just Run on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 15:59:30 from 67.79.11.242

Flat,

I would really like to go to TOU and the training cycle I'm going through right now would peak me at that time but it's so expensive to make the trip. I'm not sure it's good timing for me. Do you know what the deadline is for registration?

From flatlander on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 16:02:13 from 198.207.244.102

No, my sister and I are just starting to talk about it. She needs a BQ (I already have mine) because we are running Boston next year in memory of my mother. I don't really like running at altitude, but I don't have a lot of options left other than waiting until this fall anyway.

From flatlander on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 16:07:24 from 198.207.244.102

I just checked it out -- Saturday, September 15, $80, not yet full. Boston registration starts September 10 for the faster qualifiers, but a TOU time could still be used on September 17 when general registration opens, assuming it does not fill up the first week, which is unlikely.

From I Just Run on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 16:21:59 from 67.79.11.242

I'm going to mark my calendar and see if there's any way for me to pull it off. I'm a little worried about the altitude though, my cardio seems to be my biggest weakness.

From flatlander on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 16:25:42 from 198.207.244.102

I just checked this FRB thread: http://fastrunningblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=1720.0 Apparently the full doesn't usually sell out, so you can probably wait until later to decide.

From I Just Run on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 16:32:23 from 67.79.11.242

If I can just find a profitable reason to go to Utah....humm?

From rAtTLeTrAp on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 16:47:28 from 24.18.125.122

If the race has prize money, all you have to do is win.

From I Just Run on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 17:11:21 from 166.205.10.165

Impossible with you there RT.

From Dan on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 18:19:45 from 24.209.83.20

TOU... well if you find a cheap way to get out there I could join ya :p It would nice if we did not have expenses.
