Well, I'm not sure what I accomplished this morning...It wasn't anything like I planned. I went out to run 1 warm-up mile then 5 tempo miles then 1 slow mile then 5 tempo miles then 1 cool-down mile. The warm-up mile went fine, then came the tempo mile...ha, after that first "tempo" mile I knew I couldn't do what I had planned. There hasn’t been many days that I just absolutely couldn't do what I had went out to achieve but today was one of those days. I quickly reassessed my goal and decided to alternate a slow mile and a fast mile through 12 miles and then an extra cool-down mile. Overall I am disappointed in the whole workout...! I thought I could do the "tempo" workout...maybe I didn't warm-up enough? Or maybe I ran too hard on the first mile? (I think I can run faster though....). Maybe I was still too worn down from the run on Sunday? Maybe I just siked myself out thinking about this run for the last day or so? I couldn’t even get my heart rate above 163 bpm (80%) and on top of that I couldn't maintain it for any reasonable period of time. Maybe it was just too high a goal for me? In any case I consider it a complete failure! Even as I write this my legs feel like crap!

Oh well...tomorrow is the stress test...we'll see how that goes....

Maybe your body is telling you something. BTW, a 10 mile tempo workout is pretty aggressive to begin with. Maybe start with 4-5, then add a mile the next time you run it, and then again the next time. Tempo should be done a few seconds below 1/2 marathon pace - maybe 10 seconds. The intent is to increase the body's lactate threshold. Running them much faster is not going to provide that much more fitness for the effort. Try to stick to the intent of the workout. The trick to all of this is to get the correct intensity so that your body recovers enough in time for the next workout. Go too hard all of the time your workouts will begin to suffer.

Hey Der Hammer,

Yeah my body is saying ouch...! I went into this all wrong and I was much too aggressive in my expectations. I didn't really know what I was doing and though I could run longer and harder than physically prossible for me. As you were sending me your message, I was looking and reading more about what a "tempo" pace really is. You're right in the fact that I was trying to go out too fast and too long...expecially for the first one. I also made a couple of more mistakes in that I forgot my light so I was literally running in the dark. It was so dark I couldn't see my feet. Also, it is too hilly and rough near my house to actually get into a rythm. Next time I'm going to the track at the school where I can see my feet and actually get into a rythm on a flat surface. Also, I'm going to slow my pace and shorten the distance, as you suggest. Thanks as always for your advice and help, it is always appriciated.

Yeah, agree with DH on everything. Don't be too disappointed, that would've been quite a feat to run that much faster than your HM pace for 10 miles. Plus you still got in some really solid miles. Nice going.

You looked tired today. Maybe you are getting sick? Everything pollen in the world is high right now around here.

Looks like a good workout to me. Still, I know what you mean... sometimes something just feels off. Get some quality rest and try again another day.

It is all a matter of experimentation, learning what your current limits are and building off of that to push them back. If you don't have a few failures you probably aren't working hard enough. So even though I agree with DH and SJ (especially at our age don't drive yourself into the ground), I wouldn't worry about a workout that doesn't come off as planned, I learn the most on those days.
