Endure and persist; this pain will turn to your good. - Ovid

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. - Romans 5:1-5

Big Workout. Warmed up a half mile, and then did 10x1-mile with 0.25-mile recoveries. The interval session alternated MP and LT pace. However, the first 2 reps were on an icy trail, so both of those ended up being MP (or slower). But once the trail cleared up, I settled into the workout, and it went decent.

Did my marathon sim workout today at the Frosty's Frozen 5 and 10 in Littleton. This is a 5-mile race at 9am, and a 10-mile race at 10:15am, with an option to "double" both. I elected to do both, with the plan to do a hard tempo workout. The goal coming in was 27:00 for the 5-mile, and 55:00 for the 10-mile. Came pretty close to that goal, as I was a little faster in the 5 (26:48) and a little slower in the 10 (55:36).

Nice day, a little cold (about 25-30 degrees), but sunny. There was a gentle breeze during the 5-mile, which turned to a stronger wind on the 10-miler. Due to course layout, there was headwind on the first half of each race, and tailwind on the last half, so I negative split both race. Wind was definitely stronger for the 10-miler, which slowed down the first half quite a bit.

I won the 5-miler by 10 seconds, and the 10-miler by several minutes. Good effort overall, and a nice step forward in my training, as I think the 100-mile weeks are starting to be absorbed by my body, and my legs felt good the whole way.

5-mile splits: 5:19, 5:32, 5:17, 5:13, 5:26

10-mile splits: 5:31, 5:41, 5:44, 5:34, 5:42, 5:32, 5:27, 5:27, 5:21, 5:32

Got hammered with snow yesterday (14 inches), so I did not run. Thank goodness I'm tapering anyway. It's pretty amazing that yesterday was the first day I've missed in this training cycle due to weather (850 miles in 2 months). So not having a treadmill (or paying for a gym membership) ended up being a good gamble. Hate those treadmills.

Today I ran an easy 14 miles. The trails were plowed, but still slick in a lot of spots, so going much faster than 7-min/mile was pretty much impossible. So I did 8-minutes/mile. 14 miles.

I still recall late 2011 before joining the blog and watching your buildup for 2012. My first thoughts were "This guy runs TWICE a day and sometimes doesn't wear a watch?!" I've learned a good deal since then and about the benefit of doubles, even though my current schedule doesn't allow for it.

Well, that's over. I can only describe the race as terrible and wonderful at the same time. Terrible in that the heat was brutal, times were really bad, and it was a complete train wreck out there. Wonderful in that it was the Olympic Trials, I had many chances to quit, but didn't, and got my best placing at the Trials ever (and made my overall goal of Top 50). So definitely not the race or conditions, I would have asked for, but the outcome was good, and I feel really good about it.

I went out in the back row, and stuck near the back for the first few miles. Felt pretty good for the first lap, and was not feeling the heat. Felt like I could keep up the pace (just under 5:20/mile) the whole way without problem. Body felt good, and everything was loose.

2nd lap, still held a good pace, but everything starting crashing down around Mile 11-12, and was strongly considering dropping out when I went through the start/finish line. It just got really hot, all of sudden, and my stomach was not feeling too good.

By the looks of things, everyone got hit with the heat at the same time though, as everyone's pace dropped. We had a strong pack for the first half of the race, but it just instantly blew up around Mile 14, and I can only describe it as carnage the rest of the way.

My best opportunity to drop out would have been while doing through the start/finish line (convenient and safe), but I decided to give it one more lap. Mainly I didn't want to drop out in front of my wife and kids. Plus I figured everyone else felt equally bad, and if I could just stick with it...maybe I could make my goal of Top 50 just by surviving longer.

And that's pretty much what happened. I actually felt pretty good at the end of the 3rd lap (about Mile 20), and had no doubt I would finish, and was starting to enjoy myself as well (after all, 5:55 pace is not very hard). I was passing tons of people, and that kept me going too. And not only that, the bib numbers were getting high and higher, and I was starting to take some scalps.

At about Mile 22, my quads started to feel hammered, and I worried a little bit that they would give out. That was about the biggest struggle over the last part of the race. I was absolutely crawling (5:50-5:55 pace), but everyone was crawling worse, and I kept passing people. Passed bib #6 with about 5 miles to go, which is cool (Bobby Curtis). Then with about 2 miles to go, came up on Bib #8...could tell by the Newton singlet it was Cabada. While I certainly do not think that I am better than any of these people (far from it), it just goes to show what the marathon + heat does to people. The heat is no respector of persons. The heat killed my race and cause  me to run a rancid 2:27 (disappointing after all those 100+ mile weeks)...but the heat also allowed me to finish Top 50, and beat some great runners that I really respect. I'll take the Top 50.

Anyway, I slogged on to the finish line, quads protesting the whole way. I passed 2 more people in the final 0.2 miles, which was the difference between Top 50 and not-Top 50. Final time was 2:27:24, and final place was 49th. Again, I don't think I'm the 49th fastest marathon runner in the U.S....but ran the 49th best race in the heat on the day of Trials. I'll take it, and I'm proud of that race.

What's really cool, is when I look at all the stats, I moved up 83 spots from Mile 1, 63 spots from the half marathon, 39 spots with 10K to go, and 10 spots with 1 mile to go. The moral to the story: don't stop running. Sometimes it pays to just finish the race.

Not sure what the future holds. I know I'm going to take 1-2 months off completely from running in order to try to let me body heal. I've had a sore groin for over 2 years, and I'm been stupid to run on it this long. If I can get it to heal complete through rest and core strength, maybe I'll try to keep running at a high level afterward. But if it doesn't heal, then I'm done...done with this crazy 100+ mile/week stuff. We'll see. But I'm definitely blessed to get in an Olympic Trials, and triple blessed to have 3 Trials...everything has to come together perfectly to get a qualifier, so getting 3 in is amazing. I've seen a lots of people get to Qualifer-level fitness, but not be able to get lucky with a nice day, so I don't take it for granted.

Great perseverance Paul! What a neat experience to pass some big names too. I thought Bobby Curtis was a dark horse to perhaps sneak in top 3. But some are affected a lot more than others in the heat. Shows how great of a race Rupp ran!

I told my brother I was sad I wasn't there, in that I didn't qualify. But also sort of happy I wasn't there because those conditions looked BRUTAL!

You're the man and I loved following your training. If this is it, you've had quite the ride! But I hope to see you back at it later this year!

From Jon on Mon, Feb 15, 2016 at 08:33:55 from 96.33.87.148

Paul, good job in finishing. And moving up that many places is cool, especially since it allowed you to get top 50. At some races you really can't compare different years, and this is a good example of this. It makes the races by the sub-2:15 guys very impressive. Congrats on 3 straight trials. Enjoy legoland!

Hope your groin heals. But I have to say, speaking as a retired runner, it's kind of nice to just run short and easy for fun with no pressure (and more family time). Come try it!

Top 50 on a such a tough day is awesome. I was very impressed, but hardly surprised.

I checked the books this morning - Vegas has you at 3:1 for 2020 :-)

From Ben VanBeekum on Mon, Feb 15, 2016 at 09:19:59 from 199.190.170.30

Awesome job Paul. Been a great running inspiration to me for many, many years. You are a great humble dude and thanks for the motivation and courage on gutting out a tough day on the roads.

I just love you perspective and dedication. It has been fun to watch you get this 3x's. You have done through many challenges and that tells a story. Great job Paul! Time off is a good thing, I hope you heal up. I took 3 full months off and it did wonders for all my nagging injuries.

From steve ash on Mon, Feb 15, 2016 at 12:01:14 from 67.2.202.162

Nice work Paul:) I think everything commented above sums it up pretty well.

It was great watching for you on the TV. Great perseverance and motivation for my race the next morning. You definitely are and example to your kids and other runners on this blog.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Paul:

Congratulations on the top 50 finish! I see is as a sign from Heaven maybe. Not sure what it means exactly, except that the Lord loves you. I hope you can feel it.

Times are relative. 2:27:24 was not a rancid time as there were only 48 runners among the best in the US that were able to run faster given the conditions that day. This is a significant sample size that proves what 2:27 was worth that day.

Aside from that, I was expecting you to run around 2:23 under normal conditions, so I think this was very good. To put things in perspective, heat, age, life stress, and all, this was still good 8 minutes faster than your non-St.George PR from 2005.

Marathon is indeed a survivor race. To win you need to be faster than other survivors. But speed means nothing without survival skills to back it up, as you again were reminded of today.

From Little Bad Legs on Tue, Feb 16, 2016 at 21:18:39 from 67.189.70.187

I echo what many have said for this race and over the years. Thank you for the your example. You've been an inspiration to many, myself included. Enjoy running less!

Congratulations on your top 50 finish and your third Olympic trials. Enjoy your time off. I appreciate that you continue to log your entries on here so folks can follow and learn.

Inspiring is correct. Great read, thanks for sharing the details - especially the ones when you feel like giving up and the heat. Everyone can relate to that and you pushed through. Hope you take the time off you promised yourself.

Quick update, haven't posted since Trials...

Taking planned time off after trials, have not ran a step since the race. Goal is to let my groin injury heal...3+ years of running on a nagging injury is not advised, but that's what I've been doing since 2013 or so (can't even remember).

Rest alone was not doing the trick...after over a month, the groin was definitely less irrigation, but still "there". So went to the next step and scheduled a PT appointment with Rebound, who specializes in athletes.

My main concern was that I might have a sports hernia and need surgery, but Craig confirmed not a hernia, although could develope to that if I keep abusing it. Basically one side of my abdominal muscles are much tighter than the other, which is causing an imbalance of range of motion in my whole body (arms and legs), which is kind of weird, but was quite measureable on the PT table. So now my PT exercises are meant to loosen one side and strengthen the other. Craig is confident this will do the trick, but we shall see. Hopefully I can begin running again in 2 or 3 weeks. It would be nice to run 100% pain free, have forgotten what that feels like.

I hope everything heals up. A good example of how to be smart and run for the long term.

I have a similar imbalance. My whole right side of my core is much tighter if I lean to one side. It runs down to my groin and hip flexor.

If you get a good deep cough or a hard sneeze can you feel it tighten in the affected area?

From Paul on Mon, Apr 18, 2016 at 08:14:00 from 50.203.178.38

Yes, if I cough or sneeze extremely hard, my groin hurts.

From Bob on Fri, Apr 22, 2016 at 13:25:00 from 163.191.36.14

I had the same problem. Carried on for about three years. Couldn't cough, sneeze, or get out of bed without pain. Thinking back I don't know how I kept running. Finally, I stopped putting it off and started doing some research. Anyway, after plenty of trial and error I found a strength workout that solved the issue in a couple months. Send me a PM if you want. You'll probably find a similar solution going to PT, but I'm a DIY type.

Ran the Colorado Run 4-miler...my first race since trials. I have not done any workouts since then, unless you count the 3 strides I did on Thursday...so wasn't expecting big things.

Beautiful morning, about 55 degrees, and calm. Race was at the Budweiser plant, on a 4-mile loop on the county roads. Pretty flat, with some inclines and declines. In general, the first 2 miles were faster than the last 2 miles.

Went out in 4th place, then past one guy at about half mile, then stayed in 3rd for the rest of the race. Leaders were out in 5:07, and I wanted no part of that. My first mile was 5:19, which was faster than I expected. Then 5:22 for the second mile.

Came down to reality in mile 3, with a 5:39, and then the last mile was pretty sad and painful, with a 5:52. But fortunately I had a big enough lead over 4th place, and held my spot.

22:14 overall, which I was actually pretty happy with, but it just would have been easier on me if I had run 5:30s for the first 2 miles instead of 5:20s.

Loveland Half Marathon. Had great conditions: upper 30s-low 40s, and no wind. Big downhill race, about 1400' of drop. Given my last race, my main goal was to run around 1:15, and hopefully sneak out with 3rd place.

The race went really well. Got out a little bit too hard (11:10 for first 2 miles, which had quite a bit of uphill), but then settled in on the downhill portion. Let Ryan Donovan and Mike go before 2 miles, and ran alone until Mile 8, when Colin Grueber caught and passed me. Figured it was over then, but Colin did not extent his lead much, so I hung around about 5 seconds behind him for a couple miles. Then caught back up to him around Mile 10, and tried to hang on until I got close enough to make a move. My quads were about gone, so I didn't want to go too early.

Meanwhile, the downhill was really rocking, and the pace increased a lot the last few miles. With about 1.25 miles left, I felt like I was close enough that I would survive, and made my move to back Colin back. Tried to keep the hammer down to the end, and held him off by 2 seconds to secure 3rd. Dovovan was 1:09:35, Mike was 1:12:03, me 1:12:24, and Colin was 1:12:26.

Given I've been running about 40 miles/week, with zero workouts, that was about the best possible outcome for me. Was happy with my time, and glad I raced hard the last half of the race.

Splits: 5:41, 5:29, 5:44, 5:35, 5:33, 5:37, 5:49, 5:29, 5:57, 5:18, 10:32 (2 miles), 5:09, 26s.

Visiting my parents for Thansgiving, did the local turkey trot (5k). 45 degrees, overcast, slight breeze. Roads were wet from the rain yesterday, slick in spots. But all in all, great conditions.

Was a loop course from the local YMCA. Had some long inclines and declines, but couldn't really call them hills.

My only competition was the local HS cross country coach. We ran together for just over 2 miles. Then he took a slight lead. I was not feeling super-good, due to being on vacation all week and having a horrible diet, and only running every other day. That, plus doing no workouts since February and being generally out of shape.

But even so, with the nice weather, combined with sea level and a net downhill for the final half-mile, I was able to sum up enough muscle memory to kick hard, and manged to make up the 10m lead, catch the guy with about 20m left, and pass him for the win. Frankly, I think I caught him off-guard, but it still felt good to kick hard down the homestretch.

I think the final time was about 16:40-16:45, based on the other guy's watch (my garmin shut off in the middle, so I have no time or mile splits). The course may have been about 0.05 short, but on the other hand I had to slow down on all of the corners due to the wet road, so I'm going to call it good.

Fun way to start off the Thanksgiving holiday.
