Diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis in June of 2008. Started taking Enbrel in March, 2009.

Run as much as I can, and race as well as I can. Make the most of however much time I have left as an able-bodied runner.

AM - Smithfield Canyon with Carson. 9 miles. My garmin battery died, so no time.

PM - came down with a sore throat/cold. Likely my immune system got beaten down from doing a tempo into a cold wind and rain yesterday, and then I picked up whatever is going around. Rest now, and it will pass.

Paul, how long do you hold off on running when youve got a cold/flu? In the past ive just run through it unless I was really hurting. But Im tired of getting sick every few weeks from what I assume is a broken down immune system. This time im trying to hold off on running until its gone. Any words of wisdom from the master?

If you have the same thing I had a couple of weeks ago you'd better bring a stock of tissue with you wherever you go. My nose was running like a faucet. Literally dripping at one point.

James - I do not run a step until symptoms go away. I'm a little different, because I have a compromised immune system due to the medication I take, so I "baby" myself when sick, or if I feel something coming on. But I would probably rest anyway. In the past, if I try to run through an illness, I've lost up to a MONTH of running due to the sickness getting worse, or just dragging on at low levels. But I've never had any bad effects from skipping a couple days of running while getting healthy. Usually I can return without skipping a beat, or losing fitness, plus I'm mentally fresh again and eager to run. Running while sick is just grueling and painful. Remember, it's a hobby, it's supposed to be fun.
