The anticipation of running the marathon is always alot of fun. As usual, St. George put on another great marathon.
Me and my family are lucky enough to be old highschool friends with the Lee's and they let us stay with them in their Pleastant Palms Condo (A great place for a family to stay in St. George). Tom even drove me, Kim and Jeff to catch the buses.
As the weatherman had forecasted, it was a hot day for running a marathon. Last year when I ran the UVM it was cold and rainy and I got a sub 3. I do much better in cooler weather. However, this year was the most miles I'd ever put into a marathon and I ran in the heat at lunch time a lot so I thought I may be able to get away from the cramping that I usually get when the temperatures get in the high 60's and 70's.
I went out at a 2:52 pace which I thought I could get if I had a near perfect marathon. I was running well and felt like I could do it the first half of the marathon but about that time I could tell my legs weren't feeling as fresh as I thought they should. I was still pushing well but I was starting to guess that my legs weren't going to hold up. I probably should have backed off the pace around my 14 or 15 but I just couldn't give up the goal when my legs were still putting out at goal pace. I usually drank two glasses of Gatorade at each aid station and ate quite a few bananas and oranges slices but it didn't do the trick. By mile 20 I knew my legs weren't going to make it and so after I was walking and jogging due to cramping. At that time I shifted my goal to a sub 3, but I soon realized no matter how much I wanted a sub 3 my legs were going to tell me what to do and I couldn't command them.
I was a little disappointed that my training didn't stop the cramping but it was good to see how weather affects me and how I may need to shift my goal times.
