Ran with Kristen Fryburg-Zaits this morning.  We met at the New Haven 20K a few weeks ago and agreed to meet up for a run back in CO since we live just 10 miles away from each other.  She was kind enough to drive to my house and run 75 minutes with me this morning.  My Garmin was flipping out the whole time either measuring fast or slow.  Either my signal was thrown off by her Garmin or my Garmin was just having a bad day?  Has anyone else experienced this with their Garmin?  Time to re-calibrate?  Maybe Google can tell me how do I do that.  Kristen's Garmin stayed on track the whole time though and our run ended up being 10.35 miles in 75 minutes, so about 7:15 pace (mine said we did 12.04 miles in 5:20 pace...um no.) 

It was nice to run together and get to know her better.  She is super dedicated and definitely has the ability to compete at the highest level (she is competing in the World Half Marathon Championships next month).  I'm sure I'll be seeing her at many races in the future and I hope we continue to run together when we can too.  Its nice to have someone so close by to be able to run with and mix up the solo daily training routine.

I think the problem with your Garmin is all the pupusu you've been doing. Garmin can't handle all the extra muscle on your wrists.

Do you know who Sally Meyerhoff is? She ran the Open Mile the other night in 4:54. She's 26 and went to Duke. Speedy woman.

My Forerunner 201 has problems occasionally. I thought I was going to have to replace it last year. It would give me an extra 10 miles and I'd reset the run. It would do it again for a different amount and I'd reset the run again. I tried a hard reboot, reseting to default, etc. and none of that worked. I started to reset the clock after each run and before I turned it off so I wouldn't have to before a run. I've had very few problems since then but it could be just a coincidence.

Nan, I think you just run faster than the garmin was intended for. it can't keep up with you.

ok lame joke. mine flips out too sometimes. one time it freezed and wouldn't do anything before a 5K. I guess it is a miracle they work as well as they do.

I laughed when I read your post. I think you are too fast for the Garmin to keep up with you! Try a Hard Reset. I run with 4 girls that also have Garmin's and mine never goes crazy, but our pace/distance are usually slightly off.

My Garmin has freaked out several times lately--adding miles onto my run that I never ran in a big 0mph lap in the beginning. It has done that twice this week. The rest of the laps after that are right, though. Weird.

Burt-Sally Meyerhoff....don't know her....familiar name though. Congrats on your sub-6 BTW! Me thinks your P90X routine is helping your running too!

Chad-How do I do a hard reset? I pushed the buttons and bezel at the same time which seemed to turn it off and then back on again but that didn't seem to help.

Scott-Yeah the frozen screen is never fun. I've had that problem too. But you're right, we can't complain too much since they are pretty spectacular to work as well as they do. Someday I'm sure our (grand)kids will be shocked at what ridiculous devices we used "back when GPS first came out."

Allie-Sundial is not a bad idea. Do you just lick your finger and put it in the air to calibrate it? So much easier.

Melody-Hmmm, so it probably wasn't interfering with Kristen's. I hope its not sick. Its only 13 months old. One month beyond warranty...perfect.

I ran with Kristen at the Twin Cities Marathon in 2008 (along with Mary Akor) for about 10 miles. She is a great runner and very nice...dang you are very blessed to have so many great athletes to train with!

If you see Kristen again, say hi for me (she probably won't remember me though!).

It sounds like you did a hard reset. It didn't help me either. Try resetting your run before you turn it off. I've found more problems when I reset the run before I start then when I reset it after a run and before I turn it off. (I might just be superstitions.)

burt - you are wrong. at night i use the hourglass from boggle. i keep track of the total elapsed time by picking up a rock each time i turn it over.

Jeff-Oh my heck, that was probably you in the story she told me this morning on our run (its amazing how much women can cover in 75 minutes). I asked her about some of her past marathons and she told me about one time when this guy (you?) had been pacing her and it was so helpful but then once he (you) left her she fell apart mentally and went from running her goal 2:37 pace, to blowing up and coming in at 2:50. Was that in fact you? Hey, at least you were there to help her through 10 miles.

Chad-I have the 405 which automatically transfers the data and resets as soon as I'm within a few feet from my computer. I did do another hard reset though so I'll see how it does tomorrow morning. I'm not wearing it in my race this weekend anyway, so whatev.

Allie-Even more genius!! Don't try the timer from Guestures though, that thing is so loud and annoying. If you were running in Phoenix you could pick up Burt's Rat's poo every time you turn your timer over. Guess you'll have to settle for rocks in SLC though.

Toby-Good one. Radar. Maybe not though. Whenever I get pulled over the officer always tells me I was going at least 5 mph faster than I thought I was, so I'm guessing those have accuracy issues too. Or something.

Yep, that was probably me at TCM. That was one of the worst races, the weather was absolutely horrible and I almost quit and the half! She actually pulled away from me for a few miles but did fall apart on the hill by going out to aggressively and I tried to pull her along when I caught her again.

It was nice to have Kristen and Mary to run with and they were encouraging to me as well. Logan and Seth Wold ran that race as well and its was fun hanging around with such awesome athletes (as you probably realized at your race!).
