Word came down from the  district today that we teachers are now required to remove everything from our classroom walls that may express an opinion of any kind or not directly related to our curriculum. So down comes my Steve Prefontaine and Kipchoge posters and my banner from NXN in 2008. The pride sticker on one of my file cabinets as well.

The general understanding is that some parents and state board of education members are upset about teachers expressing overt support for LGBTQ students but they realize that banning statements of empathy or support for that group could be problematic so they're just going to ban expression by teachers not directly related to the curriculum of any kind.

I might not make it 30 years. I hear the Amazon warehouse is hiring.

Removing Kipchoge is sheer blasphemy! Sorry about the stress. The political aspect of it is challenging. Looks like curriculum development might be in your future...

Kids make teaching great. Too bad their parents have to get involved.

Gotta love Utah/Idaho conservative politics. If they don't want to have teachers use their brains and perspective, why have the schools at all. Everyone should just home school as they are so smart. Instead of trying to take the kids out of the world around them and control what they can think, we need to to help kids learn to think for themselves, process information, form their own opinions based on facts (and not just the "facts" they want the kids to see, even those that are not facts) and understand why they believe what they believe. At least then our future will be based on rationality and not fear. Differences in perspective are not based, dealing with them through fear and anger is.

High level administrators tend to like absolutes and don't like nuance, from my perspective. It's the same reason that gun bans in schools result in banning gun-like objects, even if that is a tiny lego gun, or a pop tart eaten into the shape of a gun. No common sense at that level.

I like your comment Jon. Common sense seems to have gone by the wayside. That being said.. Parents are fed up with their children being taught liberal doctrine and beliefs which go against their values.

Fortunately my son can see through all of this nonsense. And that was on his own examination.

Utah is a Great State! Their is a reason why so many people are coming here now. Its not just for the scenery or the mountains.. They are coming here because because we have a fiscally responsible state along with other issues compared to them. Taxation, crime, etc. Liberal policies are to blame..

I don't know if I can live in a world that won't permit a poster of Pre.
