So did you decide on any ultras?

Rob is running the Barkley Marathon

From Jon on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 19:04:50 from 74.177.96.130

Sweet. I bet he won't get 2 miles in that one.

From Jake K on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 19:05:48 from 67.177.21.60

haha the challenge has been thrown down!

From Jon on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 19:52:32 from 74.177.96.130

Jake, speaking of challenges, how are you responding to my speedgoat vs 60x400m challenge?

From Jake K on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 19:54:58 from 67.177.21.60

Its not a fair challenge, b/c 60x400 is actually going to make you a better runner, while speedgoat is just going to ruin any real races i want to run in the month afterwards (including TOU 1/2, and i really need to get the CR on that one this year!)

how about next time i come to tennessee w/ andrea, i'll drive over to NC and we can do a trail run in the morning and something resonable like 32 x 400m in the afternoon? then we both win!

From Jake K on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 19:58:13 from 67.177.21.60

as long as rob approves, since we are making this agreement on his blog

From Jon on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 20:05:28 from 74.177.96.130

Deal. Pending Rob approval.

Although I would argue that speedgoat won't really ruin your races, as long as you train your quads properly. You have 4 full weeks to recover, anyways, and you can run speedgoat easy. Besides, it will forever make you view "hills" on road courses differently such that you'll never complain about any uphills again.

From Jake K on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 20:11:19 from 67.177.21.60

4 weeks of recovering is not the same as 4 weeks of training! I can go run the trails up there easy anytime I want to :-) Racing on that kind of terrain just isn't interesting to me.

it's the downhill that will do you in. how about buying a daily tram pass and doing the hidden peak ascent 10 times? your quads would feel great.

Imagine my surprise to see these eleven comments.

Jake - I'm not sure about 60 x 400 making one a "better runner". I'll have to look into that one.

Running is all about getting from point A to point B in the shortest time possible. This is true whether you are running 100 meters or 100 miles. To do either well requires obsessive preparation and a unique set of skills ( I hate the term skill set).

I like the agreement though. Knoxville to Greenville is an easy drive and you can stop in Asheville along the way which is a great town that Ann and I will probably retire in someday.
