Hey Mike! You're back! Looking forward to catching up. Sorry to hear about the continued injury, but you will have no trouble keeping up with me. I am feeling fat and have the facts to prove it.

PM: Run in the rain, still incredibly slow pace.  Knee soreness, but sometimes, you've just got to run.

Other news: my old bike will be here Thursday.  I'm back at weight lifting.  Swimming still needs to get a move on, but I think I'll be fine once I establish a routine.  The running part I'm not so sure of, but I'll keep trying to take it easy and just hope that's enough with the strength training.

Had a planning day, so was able to break my run up a bit into two runs. I'm still sore around the knee, but I'm a couple of percentage points more confident that it is healing.

Noon: 3 miles back to school.

PM: 3 miles home, then gym for arms and back.

The gym was awesome today. I lifted some good weight and worked hard. On days like this, sometimes I wonder if I could actually handle a desk job- it really let me get psyched up and plan out exactly what I wanted to do later at the gym. I like the idea of not having homework in a job as well, but then again, I remember how hard it was to search for a job and get hired when I moved down here.

I'm envious of those doing long runs in this weather. I wanted to run thirty miles today. I even want to go run as I'm writing this. I know days and feelings like this don't come by often during the year, so it's unfortunate that I can't savor it.

PM: 3 miles then swam outside for half a mile.  So cold in the water, but that in effect, makes it more entertaining as my brain quickly gets deprived of oxygen and my body temp lowers... so I feel quite out of it... in a good way...

PM: Solo run in SH, then swimming- half mile focusing on form.  Had someone look at my swimming form- not surprisingly, I have a long way to go with it...

The run was pretty bad news.  Knee was hurting everywhere, and disappointingly in the spot of the injury.

Bike arrives Thursday, so hopefully I can take advantage of that and have no pain while riding.

PM: 5 miles. Late PM: run then gym- chest, tris, shoulders. Weight is now down from 161 to 154 since January first. It's difficult to lose weight properly while exercising a good amount, but it isn't so bad since I'm not giving truly hard efforts. Knee is still sore, but I tried a couple light striders and didn't die, so that's a good sign. I likely will be stuck in this state of unknown until it gets worse or I challenge it with a harder mile or two. I don't dare do that for another week, so in the meantime, diet and other exercises will have to work. Bike is also assembled, went on my first ride, but it got too dark and I have no lights/helmet. Knee was affected when giving extra effort, so the bike will likely be relegated to general fitness and weight loss purposes as opposed to gaining fitness and pushing heart rate.

PM: Averaged 8-minute miles for the first time in a long time.  Knee started disagreeing with me a little bit later on in the run this time- at about 5.25 miles into it- so that's fortunate.  I'm still babying it a ton and when I come to any sort of turn, I'll pretty much stop, turn my body, and then re-start running.

On the other side of things, my running team has a buyer, so I will be under new leadership as a coach.  I don't really know what that truly means for me, but I'm hopeful to stay employed and a part of the team- I really think there is buy-in from the runners when I am coaching/teaching.  I suppose time will tell.  Hopefully I can stay on my feet in the near-term.

PM: Ran down East Lake Road and sped it up on the way back.  We'll see how it feels tomorrow.  All I know is the knee is sore and I'm out of shape.  My cadence is back up to 177-178spm, so I'm pretty much where I need to be.  Happy I chose to work on it during the injury and increase it.

Then went to one of those "painting with a twist" things with my work people.  It was a lot of fun, but very challenging to eat/drink well at those.  I can't wait for the day I can run enough where I need all the calories I can get my hands on.  In the meanntime, hopefully I'm back under 150lbs shortly, and nearer to my goal of 141-143.

Hey, we should go run 30 or 50 miles or something some weekend soon.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
11.090.0011.09

PM: 8-mile Run with Cory in SH.  We both had knee pain, so it felt good to not be the only injured person.

Late PM: 3 miles at the track... "running" with the team.  Back to being the only injured person!  That was fast.  I love working with them.  It's really nice to see people accomplish things they truly thought they couldn't do literally every week.  One guy, Tim, ran all 4 of his total mileage in under 38 minutes.  This seems like no big deal until you realize he's never bested a 10-minute mile twice in a row- let alone 4 with recoveries counting against him in between.   Very impressive.  Pacing him on the last 1200 and offering encouragement was as fun as teaching- but almost better since you knew and he knew that he had gotten better and more fit.

AM: 12 miles.  Partially due to the fact I was mad I DNS-ed for the first time in my running career at a race I was registered at.  It didn't feel good physically, but emotionally it helped.

PM: Watched some football with friends and avoided snacks like the plague.  Then felt the need to work out after feeling lethargic watching football all afternoon, so... did 2 miles, then gym- quads/knees/balance, chest, tris, shoulders.  this had the added benefit of keeping my mind off things as well.

Knee update: Not promising, but not worsening, so I will keep going and just continue to stay away from the speed for a bit longer.

Body update: Down to 150.0 lbs while only suffering no measurable muscle loss.  Still tough to manage training, lifting, and a healthy calorie deficit, but seeing the progress helps.  Next stop: 146.5 by next Saturday.

Life update: headed up to CT for two days.  Living in FL is challenging sometimes when your family isn't close and family things come up.  Sometimes I feel selfish and wonder why I always have to do the travelling and my family doesn't visit, but then I remember I'm the one who moved my life here (for a girl nonetheless) away from them, so I quickly see my immaturity.  Realization is humiliating sometimes.

Hey Mike - I wish you were out there too, but you know best, and if you didn't run it was for good reason.

Speaking of good reason, I haven't lived near my family since I was 18, and I have plenty of guilt about that. But whenever I am there for more than a few days, I know that I need the space as much as I care about them. Sometimes things just sort themselves out as they need to, or something. :)

From Mike M on Tue, Jan 19, 2016 at 06:35:15 from 168.213.5.107

I agree with you on the space thing. We're close, I just appreciate the ability to try and be successful on my own. I'm sure they understand to some degree.

I'm happy I didn't run in the end... I feel it was just not the right choice. If anything, the absence will make me cherish the experience when it comes around again next, whenever that will be. Dramatic, eh? :)

AM: 2 Miles with the team.  Hung out mostly with the coaches, and then had a "business" meeting afterwards about money- not my idea of fun.

PM: 2.5 mile warm up and cool down, then decided to run in the Bellair Sunset 5k under an incognito name as I haven't been running much and have been injured, so I thought I'd just relax more if I did it this way.  I figured, what the hell- it's a 5k, and I can do 3 miles on my easy runs pretty handily right now, albeit not expecting race pace.  The course ended up being a tad short this year as they changed things up a bit by about .05-.07 depending on the watch you read, so add about 25 seconds to the times.

My alias: Dick Tater.  Now, Dick Tater knew he has not been running real well in a while and was coming off an injury, so he took it conservative right in the beginning, and assumed that even with a 5:30 mile he'd be gassed.  He rolled right through mile 1 in 6th place behind a set of 3 high schoolers, a savvy veteran (Larry Smart), and what looked like a child not even old enough to run (turned out to be 16 years old).  The first two runners he caught during the next mile while running the same pace, each time coming up next to them and just gradually passing them, making note that their breathing was heavy and taxed.  Mile 3 came, and he was shocked that at about the 2.1 he had a lot of gas left and the wind at his back, so he decided to just go for it.  Now, Dick has raced one of these guys before and knew a quick kick past him and a speed up would be needed, so as he passed them both, he sped things up quite a bit.  Larry challenged and Dick Tater was worried, but fortunately Larry (and the pint-sized companion trailing him) decided to let him be and not to chase, allowing him to glide in with a 7-second advantage to get second place.

The crowd was the funniest when they announced my name as "Dick Tater", to which the announcer apologized as he though he mispronounced it.  Oh.  He pronounced it perfectly...

Workout was meant to be a ladder: 400, 800, 1200, 1600, 1200, 800, 400 with 400 rest between all items except for the first two and last two.  Despite little energy, I made it cleanly through the 1600, then just lost my drive.  Tried some of the rest but couldn't get anything under 5:40 mile pace.  I think I am beat up, which makes sense.  Building mileage and speed is never a good idea.

PM: Shake out run.

I have been reviewing my run logs and what made me successful in early Fall.  It seems when I spent the majority of the time [I thought] screwing around/running during Tues/Thurs morning track at 10k/half paces [as opposed to my normal max effort] to push the other runners instead of myself, I inadvertantly progressed my own running by going slower than full sustainable effort.  I think the specific pacing was essential for my success at the 15k and half distances.

So I see it like this.  I think I'm going to keep my mileage around 85-90.  Initially I wanted to blast past that.  Instead, once I reach that, I'll incorporate a true progressive or tempo run during or ending a long run on Sundays.  Keep Tuesday as track stuff.  Make Thursday or Friday another session of either fartlek, specific race pace, more track, or time-interval sessions.  Switch the quality to more manageable and specific paces.  Then lastly, do doubles to break up my fitness/recovery runs and (hopefully) recover better as a result.

Thoughts, Drew?!

Mike, I think 85-90 miles is plenty. I think there is progress to be made by running more, but it has to be weighed against exhaustion, life, injury, etc. Unless you're base building, you want to be able to put in quality workouts too, and high mileage can work against that.

Stepping back, I watched you improve rapidly over the last couple years (um right? time flies) and I think the biggest factor was the consistent hard work you put in. You ran a lot, and did a lot of track workouts and long runs. That's a recipe for getting fast. I think the exact type of workouts and paces is good to think about, but the much bigger picture is your approach.

I think you already have it right. You've been smart to get involved in a lot of local running groups. That helps to stay motivated. I think the most important thing is to set the stage for solid training like you've done in a way that's sustainable (I'm trying to apply this to myself).

It is tough when a lot of effort goes into running, and progress isn't immediately apparent, or worse, you deal with injury, etc. There is always a turnaround out there though. I completely believe that.

Sorry if all of that is general & vague instead of addressing your specific thoughts. You are one of the smartest people with your training that I run with, so I have no doubt you'll adjust your mileage and workouts appropriately. And I have no doubt you'll continue to get faster and put me in the rearview mirror. :)

Race report- BDR Safety Harbor half

Came in feeling out of shape. Was shooting for a 1:19-1:20, as other than running a short-course 5k, and a couple ofrandom sub 6:00 miles last Sunday during a long run, I had done zero speed work since November and not to mention I should throw out the entire month of December for the pathetic running I managed. So I shot for 5:55-6:05 pace for every mile and figured I could get away with that and feel healthy.

The race: a group of 10 or so of us labored through the first two miles. Wait. I labored. Them? They did not. Fuck them. By mile 4 the group had shrunk to 5 with me still at the back. Bringing up the rear. Being the ass of everyone's joke. By mile 5 the group had shrunk to 3 and I had a weird feeling that I somehow had a shot at winning this if I raced it right. This was a surprise. I decided to start (attempting to) dictate the pace at about mile 6, and by the time it had settled as low as 5:38 per mile the group was still annoyingly together, I knew right then I had made a tactical mistake. My pace suffered, I suffered, and in the end the other two guys finished about 30 and 60 seconds ahead of me respectively.

I did not think I had this race in me though. I certainly had no reason to run a sub 1:16 given my fitness. The negative split was also a shock. I planned on blowing up a bit after starting a little below 5:55, not to end up averaging a 5:48 per mile. I'm proud of my effort and VERY thankful to have those two awesome runners with me the whole way. It felt communal. Hopefully I can work harder and catch up to them if I see them again. I missed that feeling.

Mile splits- 5:58, 5:50, 5:54, 5:55, 5:48, 5:43, 5:45, 5:41, 5:39, 5:38, 5:44, 5:49, 5:54, 0:38

Workout: 4x400, 2x800, 4x400 with 200 recoveries between items and 400 between sets. Splits: 1:26, 1:23, 1:22, 1:20, 2:37, 2:37, 1:19, 1:19, 1:18, 1:14.

For a guy that was so sick, that he didn't even want to give me a fist bump, for fear it would make me sick,... I don't know man. I'm impressed you got out of bed and made it to the race! 4 minutes off your PR in that condition has to count for something, right? You'll get it next time.

AM: Track in Safety Harbor.  Still not feeling too great, but ran a track workout with a group of friends.  We did a wave tempo of sorts, alternating 10k and Marathon paces.

Workout: 5 miles continuous Alternating 800s at marathon and then 10k pace.  I shot for 3:05-3:10 for the marathon pace, and 2:45-2:50 for the 10k paces for each 800.

PM: Run in Safety Harbor then track with the team.  Just taught the basics- dynamic stretching, balance, abdominals, center of gravity, etcetera.  Then did a couple of 400s with time predictions.  Total was 7 miles.

Cough was really bad last night.  I suppose my training is getting in the way of me getting better.  It's a fine line though, I suppose.

Thanks guys. The funniest part, surprisingly, right after the run at 8pm I made a deep dish mashed potato pizza with melted cheese and bacon, and then through a dollop of sour cream on that baby. I had been preparing the idea during the entire long run that by the time I made it, I was too tired to eat it and went to bed. Breakfast the next day was interesting to say the least...

AM: Track- basic 1-mile fitness test and then some 300s with trivia with the group.  Would have rather gave them a real 12 minute test, but the mile worked just fine I think.  I then sat out a couple of the 300s- relegating myself to the sidelines out of frustration- and only did 6 of them total.

Mile- 5:10, each 300 was done at 5-minute per mile pace.

Certainly not proud of that mile time.  I did try my best.  That's the toughest pill to swollow.  However, thinking about it, nothing this entire season has been any good for me workout-wise, time-wise, or effort-wise, so it's pretty par for the course.  I don't know why my expectations were so high.

For 3 months it's been a pretty grueling, sad experience to be a runner.  It's oddly depressing to be going the other way while still working hard, but then I remember all of the dedication and effort I've put in in the past two years.  The miles and time on my feet.  The mitochondria and red blood cells built/increased.  The efficiency of stride and form.  The fitness and muscle gained.  I know it's all there.  Now just to fit the pieces together- little by little if I need to.  It's just not worth it right now to waste all of that, particularly now that I'm healthy.

Race Report Fort DeSoto Beach Halfathon

Did the race with the intention of running about 5 beforehand and then using the half as a tempo and finishing up with 2 recovery miles.  I had some bowel issues before the race, so that changed to about 2 miles beforehand followed by the half, followed by the final 5.  So basically inverted.

The race:

My goal was to hold my placing (5th) for the money awards (hopefully) in the series or move up to another level.  There were only 2 runners I could realistically catch and move up in the series: Sean and Chris Y. who were both a minute or so ahead of me in the series, so I just focused on those two during the race and the time between us.  I thought the best thing to do would be to go out fast and see if they would bite into going too quickly early on.  I knew I'd been putting in the miles, so I could hopefully hang on to a slower pace in the later miles and make up the ground.  Well, funny thing- Sean is apparently in much better shape than I expected and I am in much worse shape than I thought so that was a hilarious joke as I watched him fly away at a 5:25 opening mile- in other words, I had no chance.  However, Chris didn't partake after the first mile, so I think I made a good decision, as he ended up finishing over 3 minutes behind me.  Fortunately, this means I earned 4th place in the series!  This is relatively exciting considering I was not running 2 months ago- and when I did run I was making things worse.

In the end, I would rather just throw this race away and never think of it again, but it should provide a good starting point for my next marathon to at least maybe hit a respectable time.

Splits: 5:33, 5:51, 5:34, 5:39, 5:39, 5:53, 6:04, 5:59, 5:45, 5:49, 5:59, 6:19, 6:15, Finish (60 seconds-ish).  My splits were ridiculous for this race, as you can tell.

Armadillo 5k

This race was stupid. It was certified and I ran fine, but I just made two huge errors in this race. My running nightmare happened twice- I ran off course two times in this race. Twice. 180 degree mistakes both times and both in the final mile. They were not quick fixes either.

I understand it's important for me to know the course, but come on. At each mistake a guy was there to literally watch me screw up and did not make any attempt to correct and make the right turn until after I had gone down the wrong street. No lead bike either. The first was demoralizing, the second was just plain annoying.

I literally threw away time today. Twice. I threw away a certified PR. I threw away a sub 16. And I even didn't gut it out and sprint it in during the finish. I'm really at ends with myself recently with how my effort in training and now in races has been. I know running is about peaks and valleys, but this valley is a veritable Dead Sea. I want to persevere, but this is getting overtly challenging.

Splits: 5:15, 5:19, 5:06, finish 0:60ish.

Today was important. Before I even started today, I was tired, sore, and didn't think I would be successful. Ideally I should drop the mileage for a week, and then ramp it back up for three weeks and then taper for 10-14 days. However, 3 weeks and 2 days out of my marathon, I'm in a weird position as I have had a challenging 3 months going from the couch to 100 miles, so I've left myself with zero wiggle room and clearly a month behind in training... But I am out of time. I knew this would occur as of 2 months ago, but now that it's upon me it's difficult to accept. I just want to have magically have put in the work. Where's my elder wand when I need it.

AM: Long run St. Pete with Anthony and Sean again. Added a workout in there too. I wanted a 4x3 mile, but no one was really interested in that, which is fine particularly due to the humidity, how I felt, and that it was Easter in St. Pete.

Traditionally, Easter Sunday is difficult to navigate running-wise by the beach due to all of the Easter services. Sincere déjà vú today as a result, as I had a memory of our similar run last year where we had a large group imposing on a bunch of services. Unfortunately today there was only 3 of us.

Running with Sean and Anthony has been tough the past couple weeks. It seems one of us is always "on," so it makes it difficult to resign a workout when someone is in front of you kicking your ass- which means we're always pushing in workouts. I can tell if we continue this, we are either going to gain some serious speed and fitness or we're all destined for injuries. It's always been a fine line between the two...

Workout was 3x3 miles with 1 mile recovery starting after a warmup.

Split: 29:58 for the 5 miles

I had planned 5 miles continuous at around marathon pace.  It felt good.  My breathing was in rhythm, I had trouble with form a bit, but I think it's just something that happens with a short warmup.  This was an exciting day because, when I started running 5 or 6 years ago, the thought of completing 5 miles in 30 minutes was daunting to me let alone at a marathon pace.  Today it felt easier and as if I was just cruising.  How cool is that?  Feeling fit really is the ultimate feeling.  I always wish I were more fit, but sometimes it's nice just to take a step back and realize how far I've come and grown.

Boston Marathon Race Report:

Final time: 2:56:19

I am a Boston Marathon finisher! That whole run was so incredible!  That was the most fun I've ever had on a run! From the high-fives, to kissing the Wellesley girls- five of them to be exact... to the cheers from random people, to people calling my name, to being right behind the elites at the start, to my friends and family coming to see me. Wow. I couldn't be more thankful.

I felt great after I decided to lay off the sugary stuff and relax my pace.  I enjoyed the entire 2nd half of that race probably too much as evidenced by my time. But, it was so worth every moment.

The race itself was one-of-a-kind.  I took the first half or so of it pretty seriously, maybe trying to see if I could get to an arbitrary 2:42:00 time goal, but right about Wellesley at mile 12ish, we passed the girls with the "kiss me" signs and I just got caught up in the moment.  A bunch of times.  :)  It was kind of fun to just pick out the most attractive ones and kiss them.  How often in life would you get that opportunity?  Never is likely the answer.  Or at least only in Boston.  After/during the Wellesley section, a bunch of runners near me either: laughed, congratulated me, let me know that they've never seen a runner do that, just told me "wow", or they just patted me on my back with grins.  I suppose it may come off as misogynistic out of context, but it was in reality quite harmless.  After that, I just relaxed everything, the oncoming marathon cramps subsided, and I went onto cloud nine for the race.  It was the oddest switch.  My mind-set just changed.  I started high-fiving the crowd, whooping them up, flying up Heartbreak Hill (just because) and relaxing at the water stops.  I felt like a running celebrity.  What an experience, and I couldn't be more thankful to the volunteers and the crowd.  They made a selfish experience (running a marathon) into a real, fun event.

Race-wise this was an experience like no other and I feel very proud.  Time-wise, I suppose I should probably be disappointed, but I really am not.  3 months ago I was ready to bag the race altogether, so I was just happy to be running.  That's the mindset I seem to be left with.  Just happy to be out there.  Although that clearly takes away something from my competitive nature, it may be a positive movement towards being a life-long runner as the speed diminishes.  I suppose there are experiences that change you and this is just one I have been fortunate enough to realize was changing me in the moment it was occurring.

The camaraderie before, during, and after could take up an entire other entry, so I'll save that for another time I suppose.  I'm happy I bought my jacket though.

Go run Boston.

Awesome! I'm glad you had a great time. The only statistical information in your race report is the number of girls kissed! Which, I guess, is the only relevant number. You might have won the race in this regard. Well done!

:) If I didn't win in that regard, I don't know what constitutes winning! Thanks Tom. It was a fun race. I added in my first and second half numbers for context. I appreciate the comments.

Great race report, nice that you had such a fun time!! My next time at Boston, I am going to take your approach and just have that much fun! Plus, I will be old enough to say I can get away with the full Wellesley experience as a dirty old man!

Congrats!

Sounds like a good time. I wonder if the Wellesley girls keep track of their numbers.

Interesting that you say you realized you were in a "changing moment." Sounds like a spiritual experience. Camaraderie, running, joie de vivre.

AM: So a couple of weeks ago I was offered a free spot to join an Olympic Triathalon relay team hoping to win the overall male relay award. My teammates were described as absolute beasts and awesome racers in their disciplines.

However my teammates admittedly were not in top shape, which was disappointing. I honestly only agreed in the beginning when a coaching friend of mine mentioned they were top performers in their disciplines as I thought it would be wicked fun to anchor a strong triad in a sport (Triathalon) that I don't do very often. I realize it's neither of their faults for her making it seem like they were so good I'd be the weak link, but the day before when they told me their expected times for their disciplines/ what they could accomplish tomorrow and that neither were in top form even to hit those, I was bummed out. I had been gearing my recovery since the marathon in hopes to be as primed as possible for an okay run just six days away from Boston in this race, so it was deflating.

By the time my running leg was up, I just relaxed into a 5:50-5:55 pace and just coasted. I spent the run high-fiving volunteers, supporters, and those cheering on the way, running through sprinklers set up, hoses, fist-bumping people I knew on the course after the turn-around. The finishers chute was the best part! The crowd was much more dense and I was able to slap the hand of almost everyone on the side before finishing which got some cool cheers. A big caveat to the experience though- I felt terrible for passing so many people along the route though. By the time it was my turn to run, 99% of the runners on the 10k course in front of me were 8:00min/mile race pace or slower, so I didn't really know what to say other than a "you got this" or "keep it up" as I glided past as they wilted away in the 80+ degree heat. Passing people honestly felt humiliating, and usually that's the most satisfying. It felt as if I were cheating. Weird feeling during a race.

Overall, the race was entertaining. I got to see a lot of people I knew, including Tom, a friend from this blog! That was a pretty exciting surprise. Thanks really to Drew for introducing us (and for Tom being nice enough to say hi).

Your team had the fastest run time. So that's something.

I think the weirdest part of running a relay is not knowing when your race will start. It makes warm up really challenging.

I'm glad you had fun out there. I don't know how I'd feel about a guy zinging past me in a race, who said "looking good." That might burn a bit! It's gotta be fun to say, though!

AM: Track Safety Harbor.  Cory came to join- I got really excited seeing him and literally fell over myself running and took a pretty hard fall.  I also fell on Saturday, so it was ultra-embarrassing.  I banged my knee that's been hurting, did a somersault on the asphalt and got some nice road rash as well as an awesome hip bruise.  I knew I'd be feeling it, so I decided to just run the workout anyway.

Ladder: 4x100, 2x200, 2x300, 2x400, 1x600, 2x400, 2x300, 2x200, 4x100.  It was supposed to have an extra 600 and two extra 200s, but the group I was running with was demoralized by the workout, so I cut some of it out.  They were still demoralized.  I felt like a sucky leader today.

I think I've ended my chances of racing on Sunday with that fall.  I'm writing this now in the afternoon and am incredibly sore and my skin is raw on my back, shoulder, elbow, knee, and my foot is still tender.  At least I rolled this time during my fall :)  Next time, I'll try not to roll on asphalt...

I guess I can't call them slow miles, but they felt it.  Pace my friend Brian at the Miles for Moffitt 10k I was supposed to race.  He did okay.  He doesn't really put in much mileage (20-30 a week), so it's not bad given that.  He was shooting for a 44:00 and got a 46:30.  I tried pulling him along, but he knew he didn't have it and/or gave up around mile 2 going for that time.  I spent the rest of the "race" goofing around with Celia and talking.  I suppose that's got to be annoying for the other runners, but it was nice to just kind of chill in a race.  Most of the miles were around 7:15-7:20 pace.

PM: Pretty quick run with Anthony all around East Lake.  It was great to converse with him and also to run with someone more fit than me.  It makes me want to work harder, which is what I need.  Progress is being made finally.  My weight is much lower, my effort is up, and my slow slogs aren't ridiculous anymore.

In other news, Anthony and I talked about him breaking 16 minutes for the first time and I got him to race next Saturday with me!  I don't think I have the fitness at the moment, but I can definitely pace him to an 8:00 half- which we'll see if he wants to take me up on.  That won't take too much out of me to hopefully still finish around 16:30.  If not, just him being there will motivate me to push more, which is awesome.  My "A" goal in that case is a 16:15, but who knows what the Florida humidity/heat will do.

Then I decided 16 was good for me, so I turned around, and I guess Lee decided he wasn't done talking politics so he tagged along for the last 4 miles offering his opinions while I listened and/or offered other topics. It's not that I'm not caring about the good ole issues in America, it's more just an excruciating way to spend time while running- I'm not learning anything and I'm not entertained, so it's pretty tiring. Race Report BDR Leftover 5k Safety Harbor, FL

Weather: 80 degrees, dewpoint 76 (hahaha Florida sucks), humidity 88%, and sunny.  Super ideal, eh?

I rarely run 5ks anymore, so this was a little random treat.  Warmed up and then hung out with the team a bit and then with Charles.  Charles is just an awesome guy, so it was very fun before the race.  I spent a little too much time with everyone and didn't get in a good warmup or any striders and was stuck in the bathroom line (as I forgot to pee this morning, a racing no-no in my book) until about 2 minutes before race time.  I rushed to the start line and snuck in during pretty much the start of the anthem.  Other than feeling rushed, to get to the line, I wasn't nervous.  I lined up next to Anthony, Christina, Chris McCaffrey, John Robida, Jeremy Richardson, and my celebrity crush Becky H., who was a welcome surprise.   The countdown began and we were off!

Mile 1: Was planning on averaging a 5:10 mile for the whole race and not go out fast and I was pretty dedicated to stick to it if someone got in front of me at least until the last mile.  Shockingly though, I was on pace through the first quarter mile and not a single one of those guys decided to stick up with me.  Actually, I somehow had a 5 second lead.  I didn't really understand it as I know Anthony at least was shooting for sub 16.  I slowed a bit as I was worried my watch was lying to me, but it wasn't- mile 1 in 5:14.

Mile 2: Feeling fine, I sped up a bit to take those 4 seconds back and scooted around the turnaround point (just after mile 1) and it was smooth for the first half mile after that which I did in 2:31 or so and then- holy hell.  The other 1600 runners and walkers in the race started to not only take up the road, but literally the whole road to the point where the biker leading me physically stopped and could not continue forward.  I hopped up into some neighboring yards and just ran on the ledge for about a quarter mile or third of a mile.  To be honest, I had run that road a bunch of times and was half expecting it to happen, I was just more annoyed at how it would squander my lead (10-15 seconds) while making me more tired.  I wish there was a nice, loud way to tell people to please "move over" without wasting energy.  In the meantime I'll just continue to practice and hone my matrix moves until they're on point.  ;)  Hit the mile 2 marker in 5:14 again, but my pace was 5:05, so I am pleased with that effor.

Mile 3: Was tired from the weaving/running in the yards, but still maintained an okay pace.  Lots of turns here: six 90-degree turns, one incline, one decline, one 180-degree turn.  The 180-turn was in a pretty fortunate location though- about a half of a mile from the finish.  I was able to "look back" without actually having to.  Same thing, 12 seconds back for Anthony and then about 24 for Jeremy and Chris.  With so little to go I knew I just needed to hold the spacing and I'd be fine.  Crossed in 16:24 and almost tripped over the tape they had out.  Pretty embarrassing end to a race on my part.

Final thoughts- I feel like I psyched Anthony out, as he didn't even go for it during mile one.  I wanted to run/pace with him since I thought we could help each other get to/break 16 today, but I think it stressed him out.  I was hoping to instill confidence and teamwork, but I think I did the opposite.  This was disheartening, but hopefully I will learn to do a better job.

PM: Ran 7 miles for fun, then joined in a "fun 5k" I signed up for with a couple of first-time runners and had drinks afterwards.  It's noticeably easier for me to run faster in the afternoon than it is in the morning.  Running this pace was relatively easy and I coasted the whole way- which felt good.  There was no one with me from the start, and the second place person was about 2 minutes back.  Temperature- 80 degrees, dewpoint 77 degrees, for a whopping 157 misery index.  Ouch.

Splits- 5:19, 5:18, 5:16, 0:33 (finish)

On a secondary note- this 5k was $35.  For $35, one beer (mich ultra) and one cheeseburger slider is absolutely absurd.  I could easily get a dinner for two for that and not have to exercise at all.  I will happily skip the T-shirt, medal, "swag bag", and extra aid stations (one is fine with water at the end) for buffet food and drinks.  I wish sometimes T-shirts and medals were add-ons or not included.

I had hoped the "35$" tag was meant more for a well-stocked race and therefore was worth it.  Not for a tear-off (bib) single beer and a tear-off single mini-burger.  It's too bad, as I really normally appreciate and enjoy this race director/manager, so it was odd to see the route they chose for this event.  I like supporting local races, but this one is on the "never again" list.

Great ace for "fun". Yearn for the day of $5 competitive races without the unnecessary promotional stuff. Just run and have fun with solid competition.

Steve- thank you! I can't imagine gettling less for an after race experience, so some of those races in Utah must be just, plain money-grabs.

Jeff- seriously, a $5 race where you got a bib, chip, and used a certified course would be perfect. I wish ParkRun was more popular in the United States.

AM: run in St. Pete. I was really hoping to see Drew or Sean out this morning but they were both MIA. This was my last St. Pete long run for likely about a month, so I was bummed to miss out on the conversations. Maybe I can drop by for a mid-day run during the week and surprise Drew. In other news, Lee's birthday was today and the little turd failed to tell us during the run. Facebook had to tell me and remind me I'm a crappy friend. Facebook- always looking out.

The run felt sluggish even with the 4-mile descending tempo, but given 2 races, 2 workouts, 1 tempo, and leg day yesterday in the past week and a half, I suppose that's not surprising.

Shut out of running.

But...

Went to Weeki Wachee for a kayaking adventure.  B. E. A. Utiful.  What an experience.  Particularly if you have the head for some questionable tree climbing and jumping into some suspect waters- which I apparently still do.  Surprisingly not burnt and I will absolutely do that again.  Hopefully next time there will be manatees (and maybe mermaids?!?!)...

AM: 8 miles @ track in Safety Harbor.  2 x 10:00 minutes @ Half marathon pace with 4-minute recovery.  Turned into marathon (dream) pace pretty quick, but that's okay- it's unreal hot and soupy.

Noon: Ran a mile warmup then gym with Danny.  Biceps, Traps, Lats, Rhomboids, Teres... no abs since I'm planning on running again this afternoon.

PM: 10 miles @ track in East Lake.  Workout was 4 x 1200 with 400 recovery with Anthony.  We were thinking of going to St. Pete, but Sean wasn't a definite and Lee was a "no", so we stayed local.  We figured we'd start at 5:20/mile pace and work down.  Well.  We stayed at 5:20 pace and held on for dear life.  We really needed each other today for this one.  Temperature- 88, dewpoint- 75.

AM: Track in Safety Harbor.  Alright.  This workout was a monster, but I can tell it's one of the workouts I needed to add to handily get into the mid 15s for a 5k.  I... commandeered.... it off another runner's blog with times I'm looking to achieve, so I knew it had some merit.

The workout: A couple of striders to get the heart-rate up then 3 sets of 10 x 150m with 50m recovery at > fast interval pace.  450m active recovery between sets.  Also, it was a lane-changing workout.  So I'd start in lane 1, then work up to lane 6, and then restart to get to the 10, which made it easy to remember the item I was on as well as challenged me to (try to) match times.

How did I feel?  My quads were worked harder than any workout I've had in a long time.  I also felt challenged to recover so incredibly fast.  That 50m recovery is NOTHING after going from full tilt to a recovery jog pace, and often I'd get down to "recovery" pace and I'd be 3-5 steps away from starting the next one.

Set 1- All ranged from 30 to 34 seconds.  Set 2- 30 to 33 seconds.  Set 3- 29 to 33 seconds. Shockingly, my fastest one ended up being a lane 6 item in set 3, which i feel very good about.

AM: Decided to try a treadmill workout/fitness test I haven't done in a long time. I was still on the cruise ship, so I warmed up on the track and then hit the mill. Basically, you start, after your warmup, at 8.0 mph at a 1.5% incline and work up from there, going up 0.1 mph in speed each minute until you can't handle it anymore. Basically, every 10 minutes you are moving 1.0 mph faster.

The workout went well, after 43 minutes I made it through 12.2mph and then called it once my form and stride length started to change and I had trouble controlling it. It was fun to build into that speed, but also a total mind-screw for it to take so long.

I'm going to try this again in 4-6 months.

Workout- Two short sets of 6x300 with 100 quick recovery and an all out 400 at the end with full recovery.  I did them all between :53 and :57, but unfortunately was going solo from about item 1 and certainly by set 2, which was unfortunate as I wasn't really able to push myself to get them all down to the :53 range.  I was happy doing the quick recovery although- I think that was a bright spot for this workout and something I consciously decided to change in the past 2 weeks, so it was nice to see it play out okay.

Pros: Finally a "long" run on the books.

Cons: Still no successful tempo work to speak of.

Light at the end of the tunnel: Although, I didn't get the 3x3 in today, I felt I could have if needed, so the fitness is there.  I was able to do a 5 mile wave tempo on Thursday.  I think I will try to knock a good one out this week if possible.  We shall see.

AM: Track in Safety Harbor.  Workout was 4x100 w/ 100 rec, 2x200 w/ 200 rec, 2x300 w/ 100 rec, 2 x 400 w/ 200 rec, 1x600 with 200 rec, 2 x 400 w/ 200 rec, 2x300 w/ 100 rec, 2x200 w/ 200 rec, 4x100 w/ 100 recovery.

Mostly got faster as I went.  400s were 1:22/ 1:20 for the first two, then 1:19 (avg) during the 600, then 1:15/ 1:17 for the next two.  I had more as I never gassed during the workout, and at one point felt frustrated that I wasn't giving a great effort during the second set of 300s.  I really need a run buddy.  Lapped everyone else at least twice by the end of it so maybe that takes away a lot of the incentive and motivation to run hard.

PM: 6 miles solo

Fort DeSoto 15k Race, St. Petersburg, FL Race Report

This was the second annual 15k on the island.  It's popularity has gone up quite a bit, but that's a good thing.  I won this race last year and had the best race I've ever done (50:40ish) and I knew I couldn't come anywhere near that this year- but it at least helped my confidence by knowing how to run the course.  The temperature was much hotter and more humid this year, so that didn't help.

The race:  Really there were only three of us from the moment the gun went off: Chris T., Sean G. and myself.  They are former college runners and I train with one (Sean) semi-regularly so I knew what I had racing next to me.  The three of us were all even through 2 miles when Sean (who was clearly feeling good) lowered us down to about 5:36 for mile 2 and then low 5:30s thereafter, so I backed off both of them.  I know Sean's racing style and I'm familiar with his current fitness, so I didn't feel he could keep that, and for me personally I know I wouldn't negative split if I got into the low/mid 5:30s for multiple miles.  I knew a negative split would be the best racing strategy as it has always worked for me in these situations as long as the gap didn't grow too large.  I let a 20 second lead build over the next two and a half miles by Sean and about a 3 second gap behind Chris and then just lowered the pace ever-so-slightly.  Chris gassed first and I caught him around the beggining of mile 4.  Sean followed, but his breathing was much calmer than Chris'.  I made sure to pass them both swiftly and calmly.  I had a ton in the tank so when I caught Sean with about 4.5 miles left to go I knew I had it.  I pressed evenly on miles 6 and 7 to solidify, then relaxed a bit on 8 and 9 after looking back and seeing nobody behind me.  I cruised from there and finished over a minute ahead of Sean and a couple minutes over Chris who got third.

Fun race, and I'm happy and thankful I won- as I really had no business winning that.  Then again, it's all about who shows up, and who the hell wants to run a 15k in the middle of Florida at the end of summer?  The time I ran leaves a lot to be desired as it was 3 minutes behind where I was a year ago, but it's a step in the right direction and I do feel I am overcoming this tribulation.  Now I've earned my 4 comped half marathons which is exciting, and also it's now time to focus on the Chicago Marathon in less than a week!

Splits- 5:45, 5:36, 5:45, 5:45, 5:40, 5:38, 5:39, 5:50, 6:03, Finish (1:48)

Wow. Congrats on the win, and good luck in Chicago! You're right - Who wants to run a 15k in Florida at the end of the summer? Even though you are not racing your fastest, you have to be happy with executing that race strategy. Very smart running!

Chicago Marathon Race Report

Well, here it is.  The race is finally here.  Just six days removed from a hard 15k race, why not fly up and race a marathon?  I’m an idiot.

Goals: “A” goal- Sub 2:59:00, “B” goal- 2:59:59, “D-“ goal- finish.

Actual finish time: 2:51:20.

Training: Admittedly I’m in much worse shape than last year, have modest long runs to my name leading up to this marathon, have trained only in crappy Florida weather, and have raced a lot the past month (two 5k’s a 10k, and the 15k on Sunday).  As a result, I had a mindset of going out with my running friends and enjoying the race.  I didn’t really do much over 75mpw, but was pretty consistent hitting runs over 10 miles.  The biking injury two months ago is really the lingering factor for the lower fitness.  Nothing really marathon specific other than mileage for training at all in the past couple of months.  I didn’t really set myself up for success, but who cares!  It’s the Chicago Marathon!

Before the race: Chicago is amazing.  I’d move here.  Took 2 days off of running on Thursday and Friday, then ran 3-4 miles on Saturday morning and walked around the city and the expo quite a bit with Drew.  I wanted to walk a lot, so I wasn’t annoyed walking 7 miles the afternoon before at the expo and around the city.  Seeing Chicago was worth it.  I was thankful that Drew was willing to spend time with me.  Drew is an amazing runner so I tried to pick his brain a lot over the course of the weekend now that I had a venue to talk specifically about running.  It was nice to shoot the shit with him as well.  As a group, we decided to shoot for a 2:59, but only two of us actually committed on going for that pace on the day of- Drew and myself.

Race day: Slept fine, woke up and had cereal and coffee.  No jitters.  It was an odd experience staying with a group of marathoners the night before (there were 6 of us).  Everyone has a different prep method, so it was interesting to see what made them all “tick” the night before/morning of.  I slept on the couch and so I noticed all of their wake-ups, jitters, and bathroom breaks through the night.  The weather was great- mid 50s, light breeze, no humidity.  40,000+ runners is an incredibly amount, so getting to the start line which was a mere mile away took about 35 minutes.  Finding a bathroom was hilarious.  We just decided to make our own bathrooms- oh well, so is the life of a runner.  Drew and I lined up right in front of the 3 hour pacer which was about 22 seconds behind the pros/start line.  We were shooting for a 2:59 @ 6:49-6:50 pace.  I wanted to put a little pressure on myself to finally run a negative split for a marathon so I wanted to hit as close as possible to that pace for the first half.  I’ve never come close to a negative split on a marathon, so I was playing with fire a bit here in my honest opinion.

Fueling: I decided to switch it up a bit.  I cramp a ton in the marathon, so I decided to not do any GUs or Gatorade for this one, but instead stop and walk every mile or two for water and then eat gummies throughout the race (totalling about the energy from 2 GUs).  I’d say I had about 12 gummies, one every mile or two starting at mile 8 and then just water from mile 22 onward.  This was a good choice and worked very well.

Miles 1-13.1: What a blur.  As everyone states, your GPS just doesn’t work well in the city, so I manually logged the miles and ran by feel for the pace.  Incredible scenery, great spectators, easy running, focused on form (knees up, smooth knee drive, eyes forward, relaxed and tall form) and just enjoyed it.  The sights were incredible and consuming, the buildings towered above, and the feel of the city was all-encompassing.  I wanted to interact with the crowd like in Boston, but this wasn’t that type of crowd it seemed.  They were friendly and motivational, but that’s about it, but that’s okay as I could easily find a million other things to focus on.  Drew and I passed the time trying to hit splits and talking every now and again.  We hit the half 16 seconds off our goal split which is pretty impressive.

1st Half splits- 6:54, 7:01, 6:46, 6:42, 6:48, 6:49, 6:39, 6:43, 6:48, 6:50, 6:51, 6:47, 7:01, Half @ 1:29:14.

Mile 14: Here I asked Drew if he wanted to drop the pace down to 6:45, and he said yes, so I lowered it.  I saw Christina and sped up in front of a large group to say “hi” and spoke with her for a bit.  I suppose I kind of let it go from here.  Drew had mentioned for me to go if I felt good, so I reassessed from there and then just decided to run what felt right from there.

~6:42

Miles 15-26.2:  I have never passed so many runners in my life.  It was a cool feeling.  I felt almost giddy for the next 10+ miles. Egocentrically, it was nice to not be one of the walking dead shuffling/walking along like the majority of runners around me.  It was the first time out of the 4 marathons I’ve done where I didn’t fall apart by mile 15, let alone be gliding along faster than the first half.  Mile 24 was the only weird blip.  I’m not sure what happened there other than I just let my form get sloppy and/or fell into the pace of those around me.  Either way, I recollected myself and was able to drop the pace back down without an issue for the end and was flying the last mile.  I was sad to see the marathon end and kept running for a bit through the finish line.  The announcer even singled me out and said, “Wow!  Number 760 coming through looks like he’s ready to run another marathon!”  Selfishly, I really appreciated that comment, as I felt I could keep going and had hoped I actually looked the part.

2nd Half Splits- 6:34, 6:19, 6:11, 6:11, 5:55, 6:10, 6:06, 6:06, 6:10, 6:27, 6:10, 5:40, Finish (1:10ish).  2nd Half @ 1:22:06 (minus 7:08).

Finish time: 2:51:20.

Final thoughts/takeaways: Even if it’s true that I’m not hitting my potential, negative-splitting just feels a million times better to be going the same or faster in the second half and/or end of a race.  I passed 1,020+ runners from mile 14 to the finish and didn’t get passed by a single one, moving from 1,430th place to finishing 410th overall and almost 8 minutes ahead of my “A” goal.  A 7+ minute negative split is obviously not racing correctly as a much more modest (or even) split is ideal, but it’s the concept and the confidence I will take from this to know that I can finish a marathon without cramps, pain, losing form, or slowing down that usually accompanies a marathon performance.  This marathon was a blast, I celebrated with friends and walked around the rest of the afternoon taking it all in.

Good race, Mike. Glad you enjoyed it. A serious negative split to be sure, but it sounds like you learned something. Negative splitting is incredibly difficult. I've done it on an aided course, but also a flat course (twice) but that usually comes in the final mile and partial.

I don't think any crowds compare to Boston. In Philadelphia people just kind of look at you and wait for their runner to come by. So it could be worse :-)

From Jake K on Wed, Oct 12, 2016 at 09:06:12 from 199.190.170.29

Great race Mike. A 7 minute negative split is incredible... and passing 1000 runners!

Chicago is an awesome race - logistically, competitively, etc. I echo your sentiments about the crowds - supportive, but not in the maniac way like Boston. There are definitely some stretches in the second half that get a bit lonely.

So I guess based on your goals scale, this gets and A++? Or A+++?

Jason- thank you! I actually have thought about the Philadelphia Marathon, interestingly enough.

Jake- Yes, it was a fun experience to pass as opposed to being passed. You're right, there were a couple of neighborhoods that were empty in the second half. But then in this one a ridiculous drum circle appeared to liven things up. Nice and off key too. :)

Really killed it today lifting using  5x5s again with progression and have been for about a month now.  That seems to be a good way to mix it up with the 3x5 & 2x3s.  They're quick and easy, and the muscle build is fast considering the deterioration from running so many miles.Perfect timing to do this right around the marathon and the lower mileage.  I'll have to keep this in mind on the next taper.

The health benefits I've been getting from watching my diet intently, focusing on my macros/protein intake and sticking to raw food are pretty profound.  My weight is not too low- 142 pounds- but my musculature is up and I'm very lean right now.  It's evident that they 5x5s & 5x3s with maxing have had a direct effect on my musculature in my upper body.  I'm around a 49% muscle mass percentage which is quite good for my size.  I wanted to get down to 138, so I think I still have a little work to do, but I'm around 7.5% body fat which doesn't leave much room.  A cut to 5.5-6% leaves me a pound short of that, and that's entering essential BF% area, so I think a safer number is 139-140 hydrated for my current level of fitness.  That being said, I'm happy with the 142 hydrated, and it's a good weight to enter a race week at.  The extra muscle is likely detrimental, but man does it feel good to have.

My race Sunday- half marathon and the first of the halfathon series.  I didn't plan on doing anything special at it time-wise other than hanging on to a 5:45 and praying, however, this lower race weight creates an issue where I may be able to shoot for a higher goal such as a 1:13:30 at 5:39 pace and a PR.  It'll be a tough call and likely a game-time decision.  If I'm feeling relaxed and energetic, I may just go for it.  The more than likely scenario though is I'll stick to the lead pack and conserve energy and shut my brain off for as long as possible.  Either way, I'm elated I'm further along than I should be considering all of the setbacks.  Even if Sunday doesn't go as planned, I know I'm making proactive moves for my fitness overall.

AM: 4 miles solo in East Lake.  I am amazed my foot is still swollen from last Saturday's twisted ankle which was clearly actually a sprain.  Still feel it, but the pain didn't seem to affect my running at all this week, so it shouldn't be an issue other than swelling and making my shoe a little tighter.

St. Petersburg Halloween Half Marathon Race Report

Before: Well, I didn't know what to expect a couple weeks out from the marathon, but the legs just weren't there.  Did taper a bit, but had a good, hard workout on Tuesday which couldn't have helped.  The wind was 8-10+mph throughout, which I suppose should be expected on an unsheltered island.  Humidity was average for Florida.  Temperatures were favorable, ~72 degrees.

Miles 1-2 Took it out shooting for 5:35-5:40 pace for the entirety.  Mile one I was worried.  I felt like I lacked strength in my legs.  Usually, I gear up pretty well for a race and don't notice anything body-wise in the beginning other than excitement.  Not today I thought... Our lead group seemed to be five: 4 regular faces (Sean, Lee, Chris M, and myself) and 1 new face (Anthony, who I've trained with on easy runs the last couple months).  I wanted to just stick to the pace as I was interested to see if I could PR, so I dictated the pace for a lot of it and mostly led.

Miles 3-10: The group dropped to Anthony, Chris, and I.  From here all the way to the turnaround I was leading (shooting at about 5:40s or faster) or Anthony would take over (and slow us down to about 5:50).  I didn't enjoy the slowing, but I let it happen, and then try to compensate with 5:35 pace which as it turns out was a bad idea.  I did sincerely appreciate someone trading off the lead though and sharing the responsibility of blocking the wind.  Both were still on my heels entering the final stretch.

Mile 11: Wheels fell off.  I wasn't gassed, I was just... tired.  I told myself to speed up, and I just wouldn't.  It was an odd feeling.  I got passed emphatically here by Anthony and Chris.  I did not like that, but I sincerely just couldn't keep up.  They flew away.

Mile 12: Well, somehow, more wheels fell off the vehicular device.  I didn't know the car I was driving had so many wheels.  Chris and Anthony were already out of reach.

Mile 13:  I think the axle broke here at this point.  Rear view mirror shattered.  The hood of the car flew up to catch the wind.  You know the deal.  I looked at my watch and almost laughed a bit.  I was trying hard to pick up that pace.  There was still no sign of 4th place behind me, which didn't help my slowing.

Finish: Ugly.  Managed to regain some form and dignity.  All of a sudden, my legs knew how to move fast again.  Thank you fast twitch muscles at the end.

Takeaways: I will use this as motivation.  I can do better.  Still had fun and enjoyed hanging with the group afterward.

AM: Track in Safety Harbor.  The workout was 11x400, 1x600 all with a quick 200 recovery.  I told everyone beforehand it was time to buckle down and get serious with our workouts.  This workout would be run until failure.  If you failed 2 items in a row, that was it- can the workout.  No dogging recoveries, water breaks, or walking.  It seemed like they bought in.  Seemed as if it would be difficult to break them of habits, so I didn't really have many expectations.  I held the same expectations for myself, although I knew deep down I wanted 100m recoveries, but that time will come.

Splits (400s)- 1:15, 1:15.3, 1:14.7, 1:13, 1:14.5, 1:13.5, 1:14.4, 1:13.7, 1:13.7, 1:12.7, 1:13.4

(600)- 1:53.6

I nailed this workout.  I wanted them all sub 1:15 (5-minute pace), and having just running hard 2 days ago, I'm happy with this outcome.  3.1 miles at sub 5:00 pace... that's exciting to see.  I felt very strong, even on the last one and the form held.  Breathing got serious, but still didn't empty the tank completely.

PM: 2 miles and the gym- abs, back, arms, and dynamic stretching/balance

Honeymoon Island Half Marathon Race Report

Received a free race from a local race director with a couple of hundred people and decided to run it.  Did okay.  No one really there to run against except Jeremy R, but he doesn't really train anything past the 5k distance, so he finished well back in second at around 1:23:30.  Fun race on the trail (even though you loop it twice which is tiring) and got to hang out with some people afterwards.  I can't say that I shut it down at the end, but I definitely didn't push myself hard the last 4+ miles.

Splits: 5:55, 5:44, 5:40, 5:39, 5:36, 5:45, 5:41, 5:44, 5:49, 5:57, 5:57, 6:00, 6:00, 0:29

Brass Tap Half Marathon, Ozona, FL Race Report

Course/weather: 2 loop course with lots of turns and I would say that it's a short course.  4 bridge repeats.  Two 180s.  Muggy/wet day in Florida, but the temperature wasn't bad- 70s and little sun.

Prep: No preparation for this race, just low mileage this week.  This is my third half marathon in 14 days with 3 high effort workouts mixed into that.

Goal: 1:15:30.  Actual time: 1:14:29

Race: Start line- Two old school/prominent local names joined me in the race today- James O. and Josh R. who have been winning races since before I ran my first mile ever, so it was cool to line up next to them at such a tiny race in the middle of nowhere.  Figured we'd start out together and team up.

Miles 1-8: were slow and uneventful- 5:44 average but my splits were all over the place. Only Josh and James decided to stay within a minute of me and neither decided to challenge, which wasn't ideal- I could've used the help to zone out for a bit.  Plus it's nice to have someone there.

Miles 9-finish: I did the math at the mile 9 marker as I was slogging up the last bridge and figured Josh wouldn't be able to catch me even if I had a catastrophic meltdown, however, James was ~58 seconds back and running about 5:40 pace with some swagger.  I figured I'd drop to 5:40 averages and be pragmatically mindful of his gains as he's the last guy you want to give confidence too.  He is a stud racer.  I determined he'd pretty much have to close with 5:28/mile pace if I stuck to 5:40 to have a chance to get me so I liked my plan.  So, I just decided to hold it.  And hold it I did- 5:40 average the rest of the way.

James never really tried to gain so I held even for the last two miles just for my overall confidence.  I definitely pushed at the end but never felt as if I was out of control.  Breathing switch from 3/2 down to 2/2 and that coincided with a cadence drop from 182 to 179 which doesn't seem like much but we all know that means I was gassing.

Place Name Gun Time Chip Time Pace
      1 Me 1:14:29.7 1:14:29.7 5:41/M
      2 James 1:15:52.4 1:15:52.4 5:47/M
      3 Josh 1:19:55.9 1:19:55.9 6:06/M

Fun race and got to meet another member of the blog afterward!  Mark was gracious enough to say hello to me at the race and hang out with a couple of the other friends I made/had there.  I appreciated that.  Fifth overall for Mark.

Workout- 4 x 3 miles starting at mile 4 of the long run.  All repeats were sub 17:55 which was nice to see, especially during miles 16/17/18.

On a lesser note, it's nice to learn that running long & fast every weekend would be so beneficial with lower mileage.  I did not expect that.  I suppose I've always learned from high volume/slower pace guys, but I much prefer the speed of the runs during this training window.  Much more fun.

Griffeen Ireland Parkrun, Dublin, Ireland

So, not really a "race" but my first parkrun.  I had signed up about a year ago with hopes of trying out the one near Orlando, but it's just too far/early for a 5k run.  However, found myself in Dublin 3 miles from the nearest parkrun, so decided to try it out.  The people were incredibly friendly and welcoming, so that was nice to see.  To be honest, I was just happy to see people being active and outside.  Seemed like no one bikes/runs/exercises very much in that country, so I was happy to see almost 200 runners for a local timed weekly 5k.

I had no idea how to run the course, so I had to stay back for the first loop with the second place guy just to get directions, but it didn't take away from the fun at all.  In the end, I just wanted to do it- no matter the time.  I wish I was here another week although- I'd go right for their course record.

I think I'm ready for the half marathon tomorrow.  I don't truly know what to expect out of myself.  I could have tapered better for sure, but it happens.  I've planned a 5:38 pace, which is stressful, but it's really more about being able to relax, breathe, have a quick cadence, and have a smooth knee drive.  I realise that if I'm leading/pacing the whole way, this is a tough goal.  It appears I'll be stuck with leading the race unless someone different shows up, which is just something I'm going to have to overcome if I want to reach a PR.  Well, never hurts to try.  =)

"A" Goal- 1:13:51.  "B" Goal- sub 1:15:00.  "C" Goal- top 5 in the race.

Holiday Halfathon Race Report

Conditions- The conditions were decent.  Temp was in the middle 60s, with only a 5-8 mph headwind the majority of the way (which is better than it normally is.)  The course is a certified point-to-point, so the headwind can be an issue.  3 bridges, but pancake flat otherwise with a couple of 90 degree turns, but easily manageable.

Race Prep- Could have been better.  Not running when I was in Ireland for 8 days two weeks ago seems, in retrospect, an unfortunate detractor from my fitness.  Diet has been pretty crappy overall.  Weight is in the upper 140s, about 7 pounds too many.

Goals- “A” 1:13:30-50s “B” Sub 1:15, “C” top 5.

The field- Really, it was just me versus myself today.  I wasn’t really in a “racing” mood today, as I was truly shooting to PR and be in the 1:13s for the first time ever.  Turned out only Anthony and Sean were up for going that quick.  Anthony turned out to be a huge help once he settled into the pace I wanted- 5:38-5:39.  I was very thankful for that.

The race- For the first 7 miles, Anthony and I traded second and third or hung side-by-side at 5:39 pace talking about 15-20 seconds behind Sean who, as expected, went out fast.  Sean hung on however a lot longer than we both thought he would.  I kind of wished he would just stay with us, as it makes it more fun and relaxing.  We caught him at mile 6-7 and he humorously asked us, “Where have you guys been?” when we evened with him and passed him.  I think Anthony and I both knew it was a good idea to definitively pass Sean at this point or else our pace would have dropped to “race pace.”  Ideally Sean would hold with us, but we wanted to keep clicking off the miles at 5:38-5:39 per mile.  I really wanted to PR, so I was in no mood to play racing games.

Everything was going smooth until mile 11 began.  That was the end for me.  My breathing dropped to a 2:1 scheme and then even a 1:1 ratio.  It was also really unfortunate to have NO mile marker for this mile.  I had entered the stage where I was beginning to just hang on, but I think I had enough to recover if I began to slip.  I didn’t realize mile 11 had ended until 11.3 or so and that there was no marker, and at that point it was too late.  My pace had dipped so much I had lost about 23 seconds.  I tried the best I could to recover, but I had resigned myself at that point to not being able to reach my main goal.  I was cooked.

Mile 12 and 13 were a blur of… annoyance.  13.1 was also uncomfortable, as I saw 1:14:4x on the display and couldn’t even leg it out under 1:14:59.  Bummer.

    Place  Runner      Gun Time    Pace

      1    Anthony      1:14:11.9   5:40/M

      2    Me               1:15:02.1   5:44/M

      3    Sean             1:17:59.9   5:57/M

      4    Lee              1:18:07.4   5:58/M

      5    Chris            1:19:34.5   6:04/M

      6    Mike             1:20:01.1   6:06/M

Overall, I'm proud I regularly run with 4 of the other top 5 guys.  That was cool to see us all finish near the top!  On a personal note, I’m a little dejected at my effort.  I have the fitness to run 1:13 but, there were times during the race where I just didn’t feel like running fast.  I didn’t like that feeling when I let it partially take over at mile 11-12.  I especially am not proud of losing 50 seconds in the span of 2.5 miles to another racer who also was losing time.

Takeaways- I need more mileage.  I need consistent weeks (no Ireland breaks!).  My fat needs to come down.  I need a speed-work partner.  Running all my speed work solo has produced zero PRs in the past year.  Zero.  Anyone have any other thoughts on breaking out of this funk?

Nice seeing you after the race. Still a great job today despite the feeling that you had more in you. Definitely agree with doing speed work with others - but not always easy to find people at the same pace.

Hey thanks! I agree, it is difficult finding running partners. See you at the Clearwater half/marathon?

Noon: Ran 4 miles solo in Safety Harbor when I got back and stopped to watch the parade where I found Dow and we hung out for a bit.  Then ran back.

Noon: 17 miles in Connecticut. Went out for an 8-miler, and at mile 2 I saw a sign saying "Taine Mountain" and decided to call the roads bluff. Got carried away up there in the snow and ice. 25 degrees, but only light wind.

Afternoon: 5 more in the hills. ~25 degrees. Warmer than yesterday...

AM: 6 mile recovery run. 22 degrees.

PM: found a flat quarter mile and did 12x400 repeats at around 5:00/mile pace. Had a 200+ cadence for most of and focused a lot on form. Didn't expect to get quality paces with all the wear and tear my quads and hamstrings have gotten the last 3 days.

Flew home.  Hung with family before my flight instead of running.  Seemed like the appropriate choice.
