Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Sleeping in on a Saturday is a rare treat. 

My SI joint pain has been gradually getting better, just some lingering soreness.  Dr. Brady said I could run this afternoon, since afternoon runs allow your body to be more warmed up, if I was feeling better.  I am improving and feeling better, but I have to weigh the benefits of a dopey 4-6 mile run, with the drawbacks of most likely making it more sore.  Since tomorrow is Sunday and the sanctioned day off, by skipping my dopey run this afternoon I get two more days of rest for my injury, and I think that will do me more good in the end than burning off 500-600 calories.  The decision is surprisingly easy to make.

Now were are my big girl jeans?  I want to comfortable today. . .

i think that is a very smart decision. better to run again when you are 100% healthy than to try and push through pain and risk re-injury. wishing you a speedy recovery!!! you will be back at it in no time.

Sweats are a girls best friend, I am sure you have some!!! AND I am sure you are fine (weight wise), you will be back to running and burning serious calories in no time!

It is hard to know how to measure your life without the running, but when you're body forces you to take time off, you'd better be as serious about healing as you are about running. That's what I've found anyway. You know I'm not the competative at all, but I love to run so much, that I take healing very seriously. It's been 4 months since sustaining a really painful injury in my lower back/hip/ham and learning to do other things while I stretch and heal has been hard. It's a journey, but if you want to be 100% for racing season....enjoy these days off and find something else to do. I suggest skiing while there is still snow:) Good luck with all that stuff. It's tricky for sure.

oh yeah, ischial tuberosity/bursitis just in case you need a few new possible diagnoses long with the other new ones you're learning. I learned a whole bunch back in October. It was fun. And yes indeed, it's one big pain in the aaabum. So sorry. I can show you about 200 really painful stretches for that if you want.

Ahh Michelle, so bummed to hear about your injury. The rest will do you good, although thats so much easier to say. Hope it gets feeling good soon. And I defintely know how you feel about the big girl jeans, nothing for me fits!!!!

Smart idea about the extra day off. I once tried to run through a cramp at the end of a 100 mile week and it inflamed my sciatic nerve so bad it didn't go down for nearly 2 months (even after I was put on steroids for 10 days). You stay on the red line and you can be a champion, go over one day and it may be back to the starting block.
