Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Pain in the butt!

SI joint in pain this morning.

11am dr appt with a new doctor with IHC sports medicine clinic, dr McLain.  She had a fellow work on me, but she spent a good 45 minutes with me too.  Didn't get out of there until 1:30.  Got xrays, which show pulling on my bone on low pelvic bone, where my hams been hurting, and a bone chip on the bottom of my siatic joint.  They also said my right hip was high, out of alignment, (they both checked it) so they pulled on that sucker ("Relax" YANK!).

Then the glorious steroid injection into the joint, but not before I got to change into some huge disposable shorts. Very unflattering.  The shot stung and hurt, but I breathed through it, telling myself nothings as bad as giving birth, and there's a purpose to the pain.  Really I am just a wuss on the table trying to not hyperventilate.  She also gave me an oral steroid 12 day step down pack prescription and a muscle relaxant.  The shot also had a temporary numbing agent, which helps us know if treating that area is treating the area in pain, and my SI joint felt hurty (as Ruthie says it) after their adjustment, and like gold after the shot, so at least we have the right area.

So I've got meds and an order for no running or crosstraining for a week.  She said standing up on the bike while pedalling (have to do going uphill) is likely the cause of this flare up.  I'm happy I went to her.  I am hopeful I am on the path to recovery.

I am also starting my detox now, one can of soda today, one tomorrow, then off completely.  I need sleep to heal, and need to consume better stuff.  I guess I can use caffeine as a crutch no more.  (I still get a coke after major races as a treat).  More sleep should help me heal.

I hope the injections works, is a miracle cure and an speed enhancer all in one! Good Luck on the detox, do you Excedrin handy? HAHA

From Marion on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 06:55:02 from 71.213.118.108

Information is the BEST THING EVER!!! I am so glad that you got some good answers! ... and a good beating, it sounds like ;) Good luck with the detox! It is SO hard to sleep without all the usual exercise! Our bodies seem to say, "Hey- you don't need to sleep, your not doing much anyway" ;)

When do you see her again?

From Merri on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 13:55:54 from 207.88.76.69

Good luck with all of this! And you are for sure not a wuss!

From Bonnie on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 19:41:20 from 160.129.128.212

ouch ... it hurts just thinking about it (well, so does the childbirth). Good luck with the detox, don't you go through this every year after tax season?

You are going to come back stronger than ever Michelle!

From tarzan on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 19:51:58 from 97.117.61.64

I'm glad you are getting some answers and hopefully this will lead to some healing and more running in the near future. How come this stuff did not show up on the MRI's?

From MichelleL on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 19:53:01 from 67.41.191.61

MacK - haven't need the excedrin, though I am tired, and will make sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

Marion - I see her again next Wed at 8am.

Merri I am the strangest mix of wuss and non-wuss. I guess it just depends.

Bonnie- I sure hope I come back stronger, but I need to come back slowly. I was thinking about you this morning. Maybe I'll shoot you an email (dang now I have to). I do detox after tax season, not with two weeks to go. I just won't be able to pull 14 hour days.

Enjoy your 'roid taper (prednisone, I'm assuming). Just watch out for mood swings.

From Bonnie on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 19:57:06 from 160.129.128.212

Paul -- I told her that before the prednisone ;-).

Don't worry Michelle ... whenever you get a chance, you have a lot on your plate right now.

From MichelleL on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 19:58:30 from 67.41.191.61

Maurine - didn't have an MRI, just a bone scan.

Paul - funny you should say that. Just had a not so fun piano practice with my middle child who has ADHD. Just not running alone has a tendency to put me offkilter (as if I was ever normal), so I need to remember not to take it out on the fam.

From MichelleL on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 20:00:13 from 67.41.191.61

Ha ha, bonnie knows me well. Moody, over dramatic, egocentric. They always say admitting it is the first step, but its such an easy step and the others are so hard :/

From MichelleL on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 20:01:02 from 67.41.191.61

Paul - Methylpred, a double pack taper, so 12 days.

From paul on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 20:17:34 from 75.162.105.45

Wow, that's pretty long. I did a 6-day taper last June. It definitely helped break the cycle of inflammation in my neck at the time. I didn't have any side effects.

I imagine you already know this, but the other main side effect of pred is weight gain. More motivation to stick with your detox, I suppose.

From Bonnie on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 20:40:58 from 160.129.128.212

I was just on a 2 x 6 day course, I was told the side effects (like weight gain, moon face, etc) are for longer term use (more than 3 months).

I didn't find that the 12 days I had affected me at all, except for the sleeplessness, but I have a problem with that regardless.

From MichelleL on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 20:44:06 from 67.41.191.61

Ya'll get to watch my weight gain real time with the weight tracker. Good times.

From Mckenzie on Wed, Apr 01, 2009 at 20:45:47 from 75.169.118.53

Don't tell MIchelle that ! That's every girls worst fear. Just shy away from the Big Mac's! Your going to be just fine.

From cal on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 12:31:46 from 66.133.117.3

weight gain + sleeplessness + acne...

I'm really interested and hoping that this works for you Michelle. (if so i may have to get some contact info from you.)

From MichelleL on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 12:33:53 from 67.41.191.61

Hey where'd the acne come from? This just gets worse and worse.

If I can run, then I can lose the weight. If I am facially disfigured, it would make me more humble. If I can't sleep, I can work some more overtime (or blog :) ).

From Dustin on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 12:56:26 from 204.113.48.69

I hope things get better. I've enjoyed reading the details about this injury, even though I'm sorry you're having to go through it. This is the one area where I've also had lots of pain. In the hip and the SI joint. I've never really known what to do or try to get rid of the pain. I do pretty good, but once I start running over 50 miles a week, I seem to have the constant hip/groin pain. I got a few cortisone shots for the problem in high school, but the problem has started back up again the last few years once I got back into running more seriously.

From Jon on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 13:01:54 from 138.64.2.76

So your cross training on Sasha's bike helped cause this problem?

From MichelleL on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 13:44:26 from 67.41.191.61

The doctor thought that was a cause for a flare up, but it didn't cause it and we can't really know anyway, too many inputs. If I had biked on the bike for only 60 minutes it might not have flaired up. But no, I'm like, "I've got a green light to cross train, so here I go!"

From MichelleL on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 13:46:02 from 67.41.191.61

Wrong type of flare, if it had "flaired" up that would have been better than a flare up.

From Cheryl on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 14:19:57 from 76.27.66.153

I got this same issue when I rode a stationary bike, standing up, at a high resistance for several days in a row. My doctor said my mistake was not stretching the hip and piriformis areas before and after biking. I think we can do uphill riding as long as we're VERY diligent about stretching.

From Marion on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 16:00:40 from 71.213.120.92

That darn piriformis!! Biking as cross training last summer with my pulled calf caused the calf to not heal :( Sometimes total rest is best... but a bummer!
