Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Set alarm for 6:10am but woke up alert at 5:44.  Dang!  A sleep in wasted.

Putzed around at home, then went out.  Boy it was freezing!  My thermometer had the temp at 16F but it felt much colder, it was foggy so perhaps humid, which I hear makes the cold bite more.  Well, my face was pinched and fingers frozen and my arms felt like frozen buffalo wings.

My first mile I took really slow, both hams sore from yesterday. They warmed up, and at 1.6 miles I hit a gas station restroom and stretched in there rather than in the cold.  As wussy, cheesy move, really, but it staved off frost bite :)

In the last mile I was going slowly, but then I saw a lady on Salem Canal road I thought might be KellieS, so I caught her, but it took some effort, but right as I came up on her I realized it wasn't her so I continued to buzz the chick.  I didn't wave, which is bad sportsmanship, but I was ticked it wasn't Kellie and we both had on mp3 players anyway.  I'll try to be nicer next time.

Confession over.

Funny confession. Good luck in the New Year. With the head of steam you have going you are going to plow through everything in '09...

From paul on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:28:35

Runner etiquette states that you don't have to acknowledge other life forms, vehicles, or other external stimuli while wearing an mp3. So you are okay. But if you want extra credit, use a head bob, just don't make eye contact. However, it is inappropriate during a run to do air guitar, or laugh out loud during a funny podcast (my own worst foible).

;-)

From Marion on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:30:25

You're a rock! I wimped out and waited until 10 when it was 24 degrees out. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WHEN SCHOOL IS BACK IN! I hate school, it is the devil! Oh did I tell you that I am going to kill my children because they are all cooped up in the house and going MAD! I finally bundled them up and told them to say outside until dark! ;) I hope it lasts a half hour at least.

Training questions- After Painters on the 16th, I was going to build up to 45 miles a week...but I was wondering if I should stay there abouts for a while and work on my once a week tempo run, keep my long run between 10 and 13 and add a day with strides. What do you think? I have been focusing on maintaining my weight through the holidays and am back into weight loss mode again. Any ideas?

I think my original plan had me moving in to the 40 miles per week after another 10 lbs lost. I don't want to go busting anything with my amazon-ness! ;)

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:31:54

Who ever thought a mom would say that 6:10 was sleeping in?? That is crazy!

Hey, I am going to try to pace Marion at Painters (I am still trying to beat my knee into submission, but it is not working). Any advice on how I can help her best? I am not sure what the role of a pacer is exactly!

Thanks for any tips!

From Adam RW on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:32:21

Paul, How can you say such a thing? Air guitar is the only thing that gets me through a speed workout. That and a nice rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody Wayne's World style!

From Marion on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:38:29

Kelli- Michelle feeds me See's candy and tells me that I am beautiful and that my running pants don't make me look fat. :)

Adam and Paul- so if it is OK to ignore other runners, are they required to ignore outburst of the Mama Mia sound track? I really have to sing "Dancing Queen" when it comes on. I have to dance a bit too ;D I wish there was a pier for me to jump off doing air guitar!

From paul on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:42:34

Vocal outbursts are bad mp3 etiquette too, one step worse than laughing out loud. However, if you are a victim of a vocal outburst of another mp3 runner, it is considered appropriate in many circles to trip them as you run by. We must maintain order.

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:42:47

Okay, I will being the candy and all of the positiveness that I can (that is not hard for me most of the time!)

AND, nothing beats seeing runners all of the sudden break their stride and "freak" out to a good song. I do it all of the time----on the treadmill. And people love me for it! ;-) The singing out loud, on the other hand, I am sure they could do without!

From Marion on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:46:27

Ah, come on Paul- can we sing to make sure we aren't running too hard? One time my friend and I burst out in "We are the Champions" after a really hard run. We forgot that it was barely 7 am in a neighborhood. We got a few strange looks from some people getting into their cars!

From paul on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:58:38

No. No fun is allowed while running. Only work and pain.

...

:P

From MichelleL on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 16:14:34

Goll, I step away to actually work (ya'll seem like you have too much time on your hands -- come help me clean my house!) and a whole tirade goes on.

Ok, so I routinely sing, but I am so alone on my runs noone is ever around. I have laughed hysterically at NPR when someone was around and I had to explain myself. The one thing I can't do without is pulling out my pistol and my rapier when singing along to Whiskey in the Jar (don't know the original, just have Metallica's excellent version on my mp3 player).

Running is way fun! Especially when your body is half frozen.

Kelli, I'll get back to you on the pacing thing. I have to clean my house - family is coming over and I am prideful.

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 16:16:55

It is always good to have your house clean when people are going to actually see it. I have this trick. I tell my husband I have to go run errands and that he needs to clean while I am gone. Works every time! I run errands really slowly (and stop to get ice cream, too).

Have a fun night!

From Adam RW on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 16:31:31

Kelli, You know us guys have a husband club and tell each other when you reveal your wife secrets :)...

From Marion on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 16:48:10

CRAP Kelli- the secret is out! Adam- please don't rat us out!

From kellies on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 19:21:12

Okay, I am totally cracking up at this conversation!! First of all, Michelle, GREAT JOB TODAY!! It was very cold and foggy in a lot of places. I am honored that you thought it was me running and that you were going to join, that could have probably worked except that I slept in until 6:45 (are you quivering when reading this?), and didn't go out until 7:00. I really do want to run with you sometime soon though. I think Mac said something about Friday, I need to get back with her on that. Or, I even thought about trying to go out tomorrow when Tyler gets back from his run. Let me know if either option works.

Marion, You are so funny!! I love the pacing tips, and am going to have to steal them and implement them when advising others how to pace me, so darn funny!!!

Okay, I am off to follow Michelle's good example and clean my house for our little shin dig tonight!! Happy New Year!!

From MichelleL on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 19:54:23

And Kellie, I was looking at this poor chic's butt and was going to tell you, cute little butt! I started my run at 6:25, so I would have been there at about 7:55 so it very well could have been you. It is nice to not have the stress of getting the kids off to school, isn't it? (I am still cleaning!!!)

From Marion on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 20:47:35

I gave up on cleaning. I figured the 20 teenagers are going to trash the joint anyway :D

From tarzan on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 20:51:38

Wait a minute! Sasha was pacing me and he didn't give me any chocolate or compliments! He just told me he has a new plan for me to follow (scary music enters here).

I sing when I run with Leslie to motivate her. Sometimes it is the theme song from Rocky. One time it was Staying Alive (she swore she was dying so I was getting in the mood for CPR).

From tarzan on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 20:52:25

BTW - Michele - that is an awesomely insane yearly mileage total. You should be proud of it.

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 22:55:14

Hey, Adam, I think he caught on to me a long time ago. He just very afraid to cross me...

From Adam RW on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 23:25:19

Kelli, That is why we needed to get the club together. We are trying to gain power. However, now that you know our plan I guess things can just go back to normal and I'll head-up to do the dishes :)...

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 23:29:01

GOOD MAN, Adam! Sounds like you have been well trained!

Ever notice how men do not get together as much as women do??? See, we know what we are doing!
