Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

AM: 7.7k which is 300m short of 5 miles which converts to 4.8 or so. Stream of consciousness conversions. 5:16 ave pace (hilly around my house, trying not to run bent over, but hard to break long habits) converts to 8:25 or so pace?

PM: Met Alison at HKSI, warmed up together.  She had 2 min on 1 min off fartlek.  I had 2 x 2.5 miles at 10k pace.  That is 5 miles at 10k, almost a 10k race, but one mile rest between 2.5 mile bits.  I did 2x4000m, nice to see the k's tick by.  I have to say I like this km thing.  It was muggy and warm (33c which is I don't know close to 90?-- Ok it's 91.4F, about 70% humidity).  We warmed up scantily, about 4k, then I started my tempo.  This is supposed to be 10k pace, so i wanted 3:45, hoping for a sub 6:00 next 10k, though haven't done that pace in a while.  I was nervous about this workout.  Anyway, shot out too fast, had to hold back, first set was 3:42, 3:44, 3:41, 3:42--14:51 first set.  Thought I might pay for this set in the second set.  Looking for water in my mile break, but couldn't find it.  I knew there were water fountains in the area, so took some more time finding it, but no luck, so my rest was 2000m, longer than planned but thought I would bonk without water for the second set.  I started the set, resigned to having no water.  3:41, 3:42, 3:44, 3:40--14:49 second set.  I am really happy to have been able to be sub 6:00 on these.  Feel ready to crank out a good 10k, but have 2.5 weeks til my next race. 21k total run in evening.

Great job, Michele. You are doing awesome. Are you enjoying Hong Kong? How long will you be living there?

Really good workout! Especially in the heat! Sounds like the low altitude is nice. You are going to run an awesome marathon.

are you sweating more than usual Michelle? I am with all this humidity. But I am sure it has to be way worse there. However are you keeping up with your fluids?

Maurine- thanks! I am here for the long haul, planning on staying til the kids graduate at least. So need to acclimate.

Em-yes, I am sure part of this is altitude. I have to be aware of that because normally part of my race day magic is actually running at sea level, so my training needs to be stronger since I am now training at sea level.

JulieC-yes I am sweating alot more than in Utah. I made a butt imprint yesterday stretching on the track when I sat to stretch after it was all over. My running partner Roberto, stopped to squeeze sweat out of his socks on our long run saturday. I tried to, though my socks were wet I couldn't squeeze anything out of them. I joked with him that girls don't sweat they glisten. Well I glisten all over in this weather, sometimes dripping on the floor of the metro at the end of a workout, sweat flings off my elbows if a run is long or hard enough. My clothes are usually 100% wet if a run is longer than 60 min.
