Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

I met Ali in SF riverbottoms. We did a 3 mile warmup then 2x10minutes at threshold with 2 minutes rest (goal pace 6:15).

first set -1.64 miles, 6:13 first mile, Ali was tough and stayed with me for the first mile, then .64 in 3:55 (6:06 pace) - I went 8 seconds too long!, this first 10 minutes has a slight downhill, 2:06 rest

second set - 1.63 miles, 6:13 first mile, Ali fell back after about 1/3 mile, .63 in 3:55 (6:17 pace), I went 8 seconds too long on this piece on purpose to make them even in time, this rep was in the opposite direction, so slight uphill

I wanted this workout to be only medium effort. The effort was more than I wanted to keep pace, but I hit my desired pace. I was going to run 10-11 miles but I cut it a little short in an attempt to not tax my legs too much before my big Thursday race. Perhaps my legs are a little tired from the squats I did last night.

Ave pace 8:13

weight 122

PM:  Dr. Brady

Top 3 pains:

1 - Right hamstring (still tight on Saturday workout, generally tight, not full flexibility), he worked out extensively

2 - both achilles tender, increasing as day goes on, no pain at all while running, he worked out calves and tendon areas, even the front of my calves, I have two nice bruises from them

3 - behind left knee (pain from last Thursdays runs, still a twinge or two per run there, but not major) I don't remember him treating me for that.

He showed me some more strengthening exercises for my legs, and we discussed whether these were or were not bad to start in the middle of a training cycle.  He said the weights are so light they are not a weight training exercise, but an introduction to strengthening exercises for my legs.

He chastised me for running all my miles on asphalt but there really aren't good dirt roads around here that I know of.  I am going to keep my eyes open for some though.  There are so many farms and fields there must be some flat ones I am just not SEEING.

Woo hoo! Good luck on Thursday. That is a weird day for a race...

From MichelleL on Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 14:47:41

Thanks Shauna!

It is a Utah holiday - Pioneer Day. We celebrate the Pioneers who sacrificed so much to settle in Utah and create a safe place for Mormons to practice their religion.

Do you have Rodeo Day in the Phoenix area? A weird holiday I remember from living in Tucson was Rodeo Day, and the banks were closed and there were parades and everything.

That odd day comes in handy sometimes. I sat next to a guy on a plane ride a couple years ago that loved that Utah had this holiday. He and his running buddies play a game to see who can run a marathon on every day of the week, so they are always watching for what day of the week the 24th is so they can maybe catch a race here for the day they are missing.

That has always sounded fun.

Another one they do is going through the alphabet. Run a race that starts with the next letter in the alphabet.

Michelle what kind of time are you looking for in the race Thursday? 38 or so?

From Shauna on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 15:23:24

Asphalt? I would have never guessed it with all the exotic-sounding places you run. Canyons, rivers, etc.

I googled Pioneer Day Arizona, and nothing came up except a celebration in Tucson: probably the one you were talking about. That's why ignorant me knows nothing about it!

Shauna - yeah, the canyon runs are on road or "river trails" which are asphalt. The Tucson celebration was Rodeo Day(s). I think this is the website. http://www.tucsonrodeo.com/home.html

Adam-I am hoping to break 36. I am probably 35:30-36:30 on this course. Let's hope I don't implode on the downhill quest.

From adamr on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 17:53:08

Good. That's what I was hoping. I just didn't want to freak you out if you didn't think you were ready for that kind of time. The fact is you are, and will do very well tomorrow. Good luck.
