Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Warmed up 3.2, a bit with myself, a bit with AmberG.  Was 34F but sun was out and it felt warm enough for shorts, so I did shorts, singlet, thick knee highs for arm warmers and dollar gloves.  Yesterday Clyde told me he thought the whole Utah Elite running team would be there, including Stephanie Talley, and I thought I didn't have a prayer with her in the field and me only in half shape.  So that kind of took the pressure off.  Also saw and chatted with RAD and the way cute preggie KellieS, who I recognized from her preggie profile.  She was going to do the 5k.

7 minutes before the race start, I was frantically looking through my backpack for my car key, to put my backpack away, and TylerS said hi.  He ended up helping me tear through my backpack, and did the clear thinking for me, and found my key in my coat I had warmed up in.  I don't know what I was thinking. When we were looking through the bag I found my race bib, which was still not on my singlet (oops).  So I got to the start line with 1.5 min to spare, barely remembering to take my last long sleeve layer off.

My strategy was to just keep an eye on #1 girl for the first mile to just see what's up and if I have a prayer.  I thought I might be able to sustain 6:30.  I have barely been able to do this for a 4 mile tempo, but a bit lower elevation, a bit warmer temps and race magic would hopefully make it feasible.  Besides being above 1:25 is different than below, for where I need to be right now.  I will give splits by mile marker, though the miles marked fluctuated a bit between being dead on with my gps, and several seconds long and short.   So perhaps I shouldn't have lapped the watch but I did, so that's the way it is.

Mile 1 -  6:25 started out a bit too fast, but tried to calm down and keep it a decent pace.  This mile felt ridiculously easy.  One girl ahead of me.  Didn't look like Stephanie Talley, going to fast to approach, ended up being Ericka Schramm

Mile 2 - 6:23 still felt easy during the first half mile, then started to feel like a half marathon race pace, not easy not too hard.

Mile 3 - 6:24 closing a bit on Ericka, I meet a guy from Cedar Hills who's friends with TylerS

Mile 4 - 5:59 (this is one mile that measured short by gps, 6:12 pace per watch), catch and run with Ericka,

Mile 5 - 6:14, somewhere around here I take the lead

Mile 6 - 6:12

Mile 7 - 6:26 sucky steep, but thankfully short uphill at the beginning, watch said 7:30 pace at the top, but gradually brought that sucker down.  Throughout the race I allow myself to take it somewhat easy up hills, thinking "this is just a fun run", a luxury I won't have in future races.

Mile 8 - 6:14, have a lead, but Ericka's behind and I am starting to get nervous about keeping pace

Mile 9 6:36 (this one measured long, but still) this was the suckiest mile of the race, knowing I was going away from the finish line, a bit of uphill, and still many miles ahead.  I am the rabbit being chased!

Mile 10 - 6:13, much better

Mile 11 6:24, I am confident at this point I am winning

Mile 12 6:27, starting to get hard, but trying to keep splits where I want them

Mile 13 6:18, hard mile, but in mile 12 and 13 I felt like I could have pushed harder, but didn't feel motivated to dig for it.

.12 in 36 sec, wow watch says 4:59 pace.

Final time 1:22:54, two minutes faster than my estimate, but I am very glad I am at this point.  I still have a far way to go to get in OTQ shape, so I am grateful for this 2 minute gift.

They had a paper I would have ran through, being the female winner, but a woman came in two minutes ahead of me.  The race officials were very on top of it and did some investigation and confirmed that the woman forgot the 5 mile last loop, so I missed an opportunity to break a tape. I hope to some day.  Have never done it.

I cooled down with Ericka, 2.5 miles, got to know her a bit more.  I'm afraid I wasn't successful recruiting her to the blog.  Hopefully she'll call me up so we can run together when she's in UT county, though.

Wonderful 10 min massage.  I got some good prizes, but I thought there was a treadmill on the line, but it appears there wasn't?  Still not sure what the story is there.

Congratulations Michelle! Couldn't find your car keys. Didn't have your bib number on. Really, what were you thinking? If I ever see you, I'll hold up some tape for you to run through.

Another race, another win- and 12 miles faster than your goal pace. Congrats and well done. Now go get your OTQ and then win that race- guarantee they'll have a tape for you to break at that one!

Congratulations on the win. Glad to see your fitness improving. It will be great to see what you pull out of the hat this year. No problems with your joints or anything?

From Paul on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 15:21:22 from 174.27.207.154

Nice job out there. You'll get your shot at breaking the tape soon, I'm sure. Good catching up with you on Friday.

Good job! Sorry I stressed you about who was coming. But I really had heard the Elites were going to come. Good to have everyone over on Friday... Thanks for coming.

Nice "fun" run :) You are a ROCK STAR!! Do I need to make a tape ribbon? ..with a cake on the other side? xo

Congratulations Michelle! You are a strong and solid runner. . . and to top it off you have courage!!! It was fun to see you in action! I liked watching from behind, but you know I want to race you at the Dogtown 1/2. . . just a little friendly pressure :) (ok we both know you'll whoop my fanny, but I'm trying to get myself in shape!) haha

From Karen on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 23:21:15 from 69.171.160.28

Congratulations! OTQ here you come. AND we are all holding out a virtual tape for you!! (That other lady must have thought she had the race of her life...what was she thinking?)

From RAD on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 23:46:44 from 67.172.229.125

Wonderful race Michelle! I don't think you know just how much your comment to me on your cool down really changed my race for me! Thanks again for being such a wonderful inspiration. A HUGE CONGRATS on winning - I knew you'd kick some trash and leave us all in your dust on your 'fun run' :) Good thing you decided not to pace me (hahaha!)

Okay, editorial note on the ribbon breaking....REALLY?!? I mean you sign up for a half marathon and finish only half way? Wouldn't you wonder when you turned the corner and everyone was cheering for you and you were running toward breaking a tape? She MUST have known that other people were in front of her?!? I just don't even get that...REALLY?!?

From Smooth on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 23:53:01 from 67.2.67.18

CONGRATULATIONS Michelle!!! You are so fun! You continue to be an inspiration to me(us)!!! So so so so so very happy for you and proud of you!!!

From JulieC on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 02:06:54 from 67.41.191.111

Big Congrats AGAIN Michelle, since I got to see you at the Awards. Melanie's husband told me about "The Tape Breaker" and then I asked, well they had 4 minutes (I heard she came in around 1:18) why didn't they get out some more tape for Michelle? Geez!!!! the giveaway was that apparently she was running VERY slowly and she actually smiled when she broke the tape. At least she got her moment. Burt is holding tape out for you. We all are : DDDD.

From Holt on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 10:18:54 from 204.113.55.41

By "tape" you must have been referring to all the red tape you'll have to go through to get that treadmill that WAS advertised to the winner - so good luck with that!

Great job on the run though!

Lion Queen roars again, 1,000 commando points for the win, way to win the head game, mentally strong.

Great job Michelle! Sweet race!

From MichelleL on Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 19:56:49 from 70.57.89.31

Thanks all for the comments. First of all, the not breaking the tape was not a big deal. I have not broken a tape many, many times. I was just struck with how close I was to breaking one. Someday, if I work hard for it!

Steve- it was great to see you, you are in great shape! I should make beating you one of my goals. Thanks for your support.

Bonnie-I agree, a good place to start (start again, we are always starting again, aren't we?)

Josse-yeah, it's nice to take a bit of the edge off. I find I need to amp up the pressure, though. I need to race the guys. If you look at the results there were a ton of good male competition out there, and I almost ignored them.

Maurine-no joint issues in general. Just can't sit on the floor for long.

Paul-thanks for chatting with me over pizza, must be a magical food.

Clyde- not forgiven! j/k, it actually took the pressure off. Fun hanging out.

Amber--you need to work on some more serious smack talk. Like, "just you wait, I was being easy on you, watch out sista," etc. I am glad you are doing Dogtown. Ponytails motivate.

Karen and RAD--I think the woman who finished before me just made an honest mistake and was probably kicking herself, I am sure. All runners prepare for races and are disappointed when snaffoo's happen.

Dave-you think there is a tm out there to be claimed? It probably fell through?

Yay commando points!

From Kelli on Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 22:40:59 from 71.219.84.215

PIZZA is indeed a magical food!
