Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Met Mack at classic skating.  She and I were in our best spandex racing outfits (not really, jeans all around).  The kids races started the fun.  My boys, who got inline skates for xmas, raced the boys race.  I ask the dj if there would be an adults race, and he announced one just for MacK and I, so we could show the competition what's what.

Eventually 5 women toe the line.  Well, I was actually the only one "toeing" the line, I used the rubber brake as a push off mechanism.  MacK and I assess our competition.  I am feeling not so confident as I do in a foot race.  The MC asked if 2 laps for the race was sufficient.  MacK said she would just be warming up, but I knew some humiliation was on the horizon, so I said 2 laps was just fine.  Ready, set, go.  And the other women are off, and I clumsily follow.  I am the clear biggest loser 1/2 lap into it, but I am trying to go as fast as I can without falling.  I survive a near slip, and finish dead last.  I guess roller derby is not in my near future.  Darn.  Mack did much better, with a 3rd place finish.  I think this was one of her most proud moments!

The evening of skating has to be worth a couple miles of cross training, right??? :D

Also: earlier in the day, did 8.5 in 7:41 ave pace, up and down provo canyon.

awesome race report. way to skate!

i think this could catch on...i'm now envisioning the fun that could be had by holding brutal skate battles around liberty park.

Maybe we really should have raced down the mountain at Sundance. Sometimes they have a salomon course set up for the UVSC ski team set up near wildflower. It's fun to use. However, I can't promise I'll be sporting spandex --that is until the luge competition.

I'm so glad you posted this race experience. I was laughing the entire time! Nice job.
