Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Confirmed stress reaction, just short of a stress fracture (no fracture line yet).

I got to see my MRI pictures, very interesting to see yourself in slices.

Crutches for three weeks to keep weight off, should decrease healing time.

Bone stimulator should come in the next couple of days.

TENS machine so I can get electric stimulation to my heart's desire (also does IFC).

Muscle relaxants, a pain reliever (non addicting she says) in case I need it.  I am getting sick of reading, but I guess I can work at my desk.

I can walk in the pool if it doesn't hurt, may start swimming arms only with my scuba mask and breathing thing, once I go crazy.

Oh man, Benji got some type of break in his leg.  Apparently a piece chipped off in Feb when he got his initial injury, but we thought it was just a sprain.  Today was his second time reinjuring it, and it turns out he is on crutches!  I thought he'd be my designated mopper and gopher, but I just had a chat with rascal #2 about being a big boy and helping us all out while we are waylaid.  Two people on crutches in my house in one day!  Its like a bad sitcom.

Man alive Michelle!! That's a lot of stuff. I am so excited that you have a definite plan and that you are going to truly heal now.

Here's to healing and getting you back on the road!! :)

From superfly on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 15:21:29 from 209.33.210.52

Well at least you know where your at now. And like they use to say at the end of a G.I. Joe cartoon "knowing is half the battle".

Hang in there you be winning plenty of races when this is all over.

I agree with Superfly. The way I see it your injury is just giving a small window during which everyone else in your age division can get an award or two. But rest assured, when Michelle is back she is back with a vengeance!

Knowing what's wrong and what to do about it is progress. Congratulations on the first step towards success.

Great news? :) Yes, I think it is GREAT news. A plan is the best. Healing is the best! Be sure to get the leg floats. They go between your legs and keep them afloat while you work your arms. We used to use them in swim team. I'll ask David what the real name for them is. The best thing about swimming with them is that your entire torso gets an amazing workout.

Sorry to hear about the issues, but I agree at least you now know what it is.

I have a friend here in IF who has a fractured hip and has been off running for a while, she is cross training and using a bone growth stimulator. I should get you two touch to compare treatments and recovery. Let me know if you are interested (I know she would like to talk to someone who has/is going through what she is).

One thing I've always admired about Paul Petersen is how much he enjoys his time off when injured- he doesn't fret that he "should" be running or cross-training or anything. Instead, he relishes in having a legitimate reason to spend more time with his family, work, sleeping, reading, etc. When he is healed, he comes back with a vengeance. So, in the spirit of Paul, enjoy your time off.

Well said Jon, just soak up the sleep and play time with the kids:)

I'm glad to hear you have a diagnosis and plan. Good luck with the recovery. Are they keeping total weight off one leg? Are your armpits dying yet?

From MichelleL on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 22:12:00 from 71.219.40.17

Thanks everyone.

Jon - I admire Paul, too, but its much easier to admire him than to adopt his cheerful attitude. I will try.

Maurine - I am allowed to put my foot down enough to "torture a spider" but not to kill it, it helps me keep balance, and I'm not holding up my leg, which would pull on my pelvic area. My pits are mad but not screaming.

From experience I know that the crutches won't hurt as much if you duct tape a towel to the head of it. Not as aestethically pleasing, but it does the job. And YAY for kiddo time! :-D!

From Clay on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 10:04:04 from 67.182.209.60

That is good news! The bone stimulator really works my nephew used one and it cut his healing time in half when he broke his foot, so use it like crazy!I hope your boy gets better soon too, when it rains it pours, try and keep your chin up or your head down, whatever it takes;-)

Take care.

I guess it's time to pull Polly Anna out of the closet and play the Glad Game :) (We were talking about this on JulieC's blog yesterday.)

Lots of love, Michelle!!! :) xoxoxoxo

Glad to hear you are getting some good direction now. Rest up and doing worry about losing the fitness. With your mileage base once you heal you will get back in the saddle pretty fast. I'm in a similar boat but much less severe. I'm supposed to be wearing a boot, and may start resorting to it. Swimming is now my outlet, two hours this morning. Boring. Boring. I haven't run in 10 days. I don't recall taking that much time off in over two years.

From Eric Day on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 17:23:11 from 189.192.34.133

There is no evil that last 100 years. So maybe you are getting near the end of the tunnel, you can see the light!

Best healing for you. !!
