Ran inside Dimple Dell Track, ran 2 miles fast for me 7:56 and 8:04. Other 2 were shorter jogs. Always amazes me I think Im going fast and I struggle to break 8 minutes while my 10 year old can average 7 minutes even for a 10K and top runners easily run 5 to 6 minutes. Oh well at least I broke 8 minutes and I would think thats slower than being outside as the loops are only 1/10 mile long. Its cooler in there but I must say I get a little bored doing short loops. I find I can speed up when I see someone trying to catch me (other old guys) so that tells me I have ability to work on "road kills" as Brent calls them and maybe energy to push myself to go faster when I mentally want to

Hey, idea, speed is much a component of leg turnover and quad strength as we get older. Are you doing hill workouts once a week? If not, you will be surprised with the improvement in speed after a few weeks of good hill workouts. *Note, 8 minute miles is not easy, if you can run 8 mile minute miles you will be ahead of at least 50% of the runners in most races.

I think that breaking 8 minutes in a non-racing situation is very commendable! I'm hoping that I can get there in a couple of months for 2 miles.

Michael - congratulations on breaking 8:00! Success comes one step at a time, very often a very small step. Did you have a break between those two miles, or did you run them back to back?

Thanks, appreciate the comments

No I didnt run then consecutive. I ran 1 mile and then fast walked 2 laps (0.2) miles and then did the next mile

Ive thought several times about doing some hill work, I know Sasha has suggested that too and Ive read some in Runners magazine about it. Ive done hill running on trails, but not fast as Im often watching for my foot placement with rocks and roots on the trail. Im thinking I can do some hills when I take my son to XC practice starting in a month as there are some hills there and maybe it will start cooling down. Maybe I can find a little time to work some in now too. My schedule is a little challenging now, but Ill see. Good idea.

Good luck too Lybi, I think you can do it too
