  • 2:59 Marathon
  • 1:25 Half Marathon
  • 18:30 5K

Long-Term Running Goals:

Maintain my health and continuously seek to improve my fitness. Maybe someday get under 3:00 for marathon. More importantly, I'd like to figure out what my maximum ability is and reach that.

I'd also like to find the right balance in life and use running to enhance and improve myself.

Personal:

Dad of  three (welcome Charlotte Dani on 8/10/20) awesome kids and stepdad to three almost as awesome as my own kids.

I have a brown dog named Stella, and three cats - Catty, Tortie, and Esperanza.

(old lines that were a little out of date but couldn't quite bring myself to removing them completely:) Also, have one wonderful brown dog named Sammy and just added a grey tiger cat (Catty) whose life started out rough but now has a better home.

I've recently started another blog so I can easily add lots of pictures and so other non-FRB users can leave comments:

Forward Progress!

Also, for 2012 I started a blog to write down each day one thing that I am grateful for

Grateful Blog

Holiday Halfathon race in Madeira Beach this morning.

A little bit warm but not too bad. I wasn't sure how it would turn out for a few reasons - I have often done worse than expected on this course, I should have picked the grilled fish with a side of potatoes instead of lobsters pasta (alfredo sauce), I should have gotten more sleep.  Regardless, I knew that anything was possible.

Started out at what I thought was a reasonable pace (a few seconds slower than goal pace), then backed it down a little. Stayed pretty even and was happy to get a little faster at mile 9 when I passed a few people who I had kept in my sight.  A woman named Terri was running, she pretty much usually finishes way ahead of me.

I also had reviewed my notes and the splits from the last time I ran this race and was at least mentally prepared for the sections which gave me trouble.  So, when I got to those sections, instead of trying to do whatever it took to get down to goal pace, I just tried to beat my pace from last time for that section.  I also noticed that the people I was running near were slowing down at the same time as me, more or less.

I'm not sure why, but was able to break out of my rut of slower and slower miles.  I finally passed Terri and also finally stayed ahead of another woman who kept on passing me shortly after I would pass her.

Eudair paced me for about a mile towards the end which really helped.   After she let me go, I wasn't quite able to hold onto the faster pace.  There was a guy in front of me who knew I was closing in on him so he kept ahead of me.  With the final mile on a packed dirt trail I was really glad about the off road running I had done, because this section used to scare me - but not anymore!

It wasn't a PR but it was my best time so far for this course.

Splits: 6:31, 6:33, 6:44, 6:39, 6:39, 6:47, 6:49, 6:51, 6:36, 6:48, 6:41,6:34,6:41,0.14@6:06

Nice to see a lot of friends today. Great job from Elizabeth singing the national anthem and then running.

Felt pretty tired this morning, so just took it easy and skipped the intervals. Sped up a little on the second half of the run and felt better than when I started. Ran with Randy, Rachel, and Christina for the first part of the run.

Slight motivation problem this morning, so was a little bit short on time. Warm and humid but got the job done for the most part. It's ok, I'm sure there were others in the same boat this morning.

Much cooler this morning, nice!

Ran most of the run easy, especially the first half. Spent time running while chatting with Mike, Jammie, and then Michelle. For a mini speed work session I did 3x400m and 1x800m to practice 6:00 and below pace, then finished up with a short cool down distance.

Cool out this morning, started out slow. Felt pretty good.

Taking it easy today on purpose for tomorrow's race.

Was excited to run this race again this year since it was such a special race to me last year when unexpectedly I PR'd, won the race and then went on to run a long trail run all in the same morning.  There were a lot more runners this year so I knew there would be much less chance of winning it.

I felt great for this race but there were a few mishaps. The course was measured correctly but I did not run it correctly so my distance was about 0.2 miles too far.

Since the course starts out almost immediately going downhill, I decided I would go out as fast as I could and then hang on.

First mile felt great at 5:47. At the start of the second mile my shoelace had come untied, so I stopped to tie it. Started catching back up but then had to slow down for an ambulance that had to cross, got going again and still managed a 6:13 for the second mile.

I was starting to gain on the tail end of the lead pack. Feeling pretty good and then I heard someone say something to me. I was pretty sure that I (and the three people I was behind) missed a turn.

Got back on course and caught up to some people who did not miss the turn. Third mile was 6:09, but then still had another 0.31 to go. Just missed coming in under 20:00. Not quite my day for racing but I felt great about the effort and had a lot of fun.
