Barry sent me a text yesterday and asked me if I wanted to run 11 miles today with him and Dallin. I said OK, not thinking who Dallin is. When I ran over to Barry's house and saw it was Dallin Farnsworth, I knew it was going to be a long morning. I have not been feeling great and speed has not been with me lately. For those of you who don't live around here, Dallin Farnsworth is a Junior in high school and one of the best cross-country and track runners in the country. He raced last Friday in New York City in the New Balance Indoor Championships and finished 4th in the nation behind 3 seniors and missed the all-time record for a junior by 1.5 seconds. He is racing again next week at another national meet at Stanford. The kid is fast.... When we started, Barry told him we would start slow and then run some tempo miles later on. We ran up to Satterfield, down the hill, and back up to Monte Vista. Then Barry said we would tempo the next 2 miles just past Syringa Elementary school. We started picking up the pace and I could not keep up with them. I ran a 6:30 mile and was lagging way behind. Dallin didn't even break a sweat. We even had him run an extra mile loop on the ISU campus while we headed back North, but he caught us before we got to Alameda Park. Overall, this was actually one of my better paced runs this year, but I felt like a slug next to this great runner. It's actually pretty cool that he only lives a few blocks from me. There must be some genetic thing going on in his family because all the state/course records that Dallin is breaking were held by his older brother Taylor, who runs for BYU now. I feel old and tired...
