Half Marathon: 2:04

My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

AM run with the loaded jogging stroller.  I am exhausted, as usual.  It seems that running without the stroller is just so darn easy by comparison.  Average pace for the 2 miles was 11:17.  Tomorrow, I will run 1-2 easy miles with Holly, then my race is on Friday.  It is going to be so HOT!

Has anyone ever heard of any kind of running gear that actually helps to cool you down--not dry wicking shirts, or hydration packs--I'm thinking more along the lines of gloves that have a gel in them that you stick in your freezer.  If there isn't such a thing, there SHOULD be.  I'd buy them.  As it is, I am half tempted to carry an ice cube in each hand until it melts.   James, of course, would have to lug a fanny pack full of ice--don't know how well that'd go over.

It is so nice of James to run this race with me and pace me.  This is going to be our weekly date--much better than going to a restaurant and consuming massive quanities of calorie dense foods.   Not that I don't like eating out.   ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.  Excuse me, I faded out there for a second.  Better go.

I do know of a vest that was used by some runners prior to the Olympic marathon in Athens to help them stay cool. But I was thinking I would just bring my fuel belt full of freezing cold water and squirt it on you at regular intervals, then have you chase me down . . . :) I bet you are going to have an easy time running the 5K after your legs are used to running with the jogging stroller . . . good job!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHoHOHoHO Do you have the guts to provoke the wrath of your fiery little wife? I'm sure it would make me run faster...

Good luck at your race Saturday. For cooling down (men can stop reading right NOW!) consider putting ice cubes in your bra top. I guarantee that will cool your core! I have a crazy friend who stuffs ice cubes mid-race and then fishes one out periodically to eat! She's one of the top runners, cyclists, AND triathletes in this state so when you are the best, then you do what it takes!

Lybi, no real help here, just so amuzed with James and Lulu's comments. If you don't mind running wet, you could soak your clothes before the race. Durint the Hawaii and Maui marathon, they hand out cool sponges full of water. If you have support besides James, have a friend be ready with the soaked cool sponge to squeeze water on you. I am looking forward to your survial report, I mean race report. Good luck

Sounds like some good ideas! But your also very creative so I know you'll come up with a great idea. Good luck with the race! If you don't stop running with that stroller your gonna blow us all away in St. George! (I think your already faster than me normally so too late) But your also gonna have some great arms to boot! Looking forward to it!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa! You guys are so great! Lulu this is a whole different side to you! I am impressed. Although, I can vividly imagine going to the Doctor for frostbite in a rather...unusual...place and trying to explain exactly how it happened! No really, thanks so much for the tip. We'll see how desperate I get. Every idea is a good idea when you are coming up with options. Sponges are great too. I'm going to have to get James to carry some for sure.

And Michelle, you needn't worry about my little 2 miles a day with the stroller when YOU are the one running 6-7 milers all the time. You're gonna end up pushing ME in the stroller if you aren't careful...

Pray for rain, that always helps... Lybi, I think my leg is worse than I thought and I did a dumb thing last night I went out and tested it to see how it is healing, and much to my dis-liking it is the same or even worse...

I guess the ellipitical gider wasn't hurting it but the injury is not healing either so that is not a good sign, I am going to go and see an orthopedic friend of mine and see what he has to say and then I guess I will go from there. FRUSTRATING!!!!

Lybi, I'm finally on! Still need good shoes, but I'm gonna start blogging my walks anyway.

From Paul Ivory on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 21:53:13

Lybi, A group of us ran a marathon in Austin, TX in August where the temperature at the start was 104 degrees and add Texas humidity and you get the idea. We took hand towels and put crushed ice in them and folded them to fit on our head under our baseball caps. The towels extended down the back of the head to the neck, so as the ice cubes melted and cooled our head the cold water dripped down our back and it was great. We ran a course where we could replenish the ice every 2 miles. It worked great and none of us had any issues with the heat. People called us crazy for running in that heat, but it gave us a story to tell the rest of our lives. Good luck.

Good Luck in your race! Enjoy all the people running around you and feed off all their energy and excitement. You have trained and you have prepared. Now enjoy!
