My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

4 miles on the treadmill, watching "Pride and Prejudice" with Keira Knightly.  I LOVE that one scene in the rain.  I had to rewind and watch it again.

Ug.  I wrote a long thing on marathons, but I took too long and didn't save it, so it fell into the black cyber hole.  Durn!  Maybe I'll try again later.

I LOVE pride and prejudice. I think that I could watch every version ever made about a dozen times and be happy. I watched the whole BBC version two and a half times when we moved into our house and it was winter and I was exhausted from selling a house and moving and had no friends to talk to to tell me it was dumb to watch too much TV.

In the running world....I loved running a Marathon. I got a little vacation with Sasha. There were hundreds of people running with me. I could talk to other people for hours. It hurt a little at the end but it really wasn't very stressful..no screaming kids..just me and hundreds of other people and the road. I can't wait to hear more from you about why you decided to run one.

I didn't know you ran a marathon, Sarah! When was that? Which one was it? What was your weekly mileage? Is there a race report for it? I'm gonna go check. I feel like I can relate to you more than a lot of the roborunners on the blog, so this is encouraging to me.

I LOVE that movie too. I could actually do the dreadmill if that was on. I wonder who has borrowed it? How do you keep your kids from killing you when you are on the treadmill?

From Lybi on Fri, Aug 08, 2008 at 21:52:06

Marion, I usually only use the treadmill when they're asleep--either before they get up in the am, or after they are snoozing at night. Otherwise they would surely be missing some fingers... My kids are very curious. (Where'd they get that from?)

From marion on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 00:25:18

Mine aren't curious, they just believe that ALL toys must be airborn! It's a battle field in the family room :)

Sounds like I may get to run SGM with you after all! Sweet! Motivation is a tricky thing, isn't it?

That rain scene is SO romantic!!!

I hate those black cyberholes... they got a bunch of my writings too...

Whoops..I guess I forgot to mention that little ol thing..no race report on it because I ran it in 2003. I ran it on 5 miles a day and some 10-18 milers on the weekend. It probably wasn't quite enough mileage but Julia was only 1 and we were doing the 3 kids balancing act. I'm still not sure how Sasha talked me into it because part of me resented it a little bit. However, actually running it was truly not that bad. I mean..yes...it was so long and hard of course but I really felt like the demands I faced with my three little kids every day were way more difficult emotionally at least.

I ran really slow too so that helped it not stress me out. I think my avg pace was 11 something. My time was 4:45. I just took it easy and enjoyed myself. Although I was in shape to race at 8 minute mile pace for shorter distances that was too long for me to run very fast.

It is really cool to be able to tell people that I've run a marathon and I do feel proud of myself ...BUT....I try really hard to not do things that I'm going to resent or that take more what I call "emotional energy" than I have. So..really think about it and don't do it if James has to take you there kicking and screaming. Do it for you...for the life experience but only if you really want to.

Make sure to hit the Save button once a paragraph or so when typing long entries. A side note for you and everybody - reading the instructions on the page when you type in the entry that I tried hard to make hard to miss is very helpful.

From Lucia on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 15:53:17

It's easy to forget to save the entries, Sasha, because the system works so perfectly well most of the time, with only a few exceptions!

Now how about making it so that the entries save automatically as you type? :)

Lucia, you are a genius!

Lucia:

This feature is on a long-term TODO list, but does not take priority for two reasons. One, it is quite a bit of work, and we are severely undermanned (as in I am currently the only one coding, the blog is still making pennies, and I am a sole provider for a family of 7, so blog coding happens when I am lucky to find an hour here and there). I believe in teaching users good habits that will always protect them vs investing a lot of work to only reduce the probability of damage when those habits are not present. In this case, the habit is the awareness and thus the sense of vulnerability that the data you have typed out but not saved is still half way between your brain and persistent storage.

From Lybi on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 16:49:11

Ah, I see. As usual, your sole intention is to make us better people. How very wise you are Sasha. ;)

From Lybi on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 16:52:07

Although, I totally get the part about being super busy. And the blog IS free and fabulous, so no complaints here, other than friendly teasing that is very important to running...somehow.
