8AM.  Okay, so I tried to strike on the balls of my feet and absolutely HATED it!  I did feel propelled forward, but at a pace that my heart couldn't maintain for long, and I felt like I was getting the worst ever shin splints. I do love to run barefoot, so I'll have to see sometime if it feels any different when I don't have shoes on. But that will have to wait until its a bit warmer. I don't do crazy winter barefoot runs like some people do.

The only way to learn to run barefoot is to run barefoot unfortunately (or fortunately). The reason you feel good when you run barefoot is because its natural. What you were trying to do by wearing shoes and running on the balls of your feet, probably wasn't that natural and that's why it hurt probably. I couldn't run for a week after I did that once for 4 miles. Also, changing your form, even if you're doing it right, would take some time to transition into.
