| Okay, this may be premature, but I need some accountability to keep me motivated. I just had a baby in April and haven't been able to exercise in months, so I'm starting very slow. Well, I say that, but I actually walked 1 1/2 hours last Friday and was sore for 3 days. So, I'm trying again. This morning, I only went 2 miles (instead of 4) and stopped to talk to a friend who was driving home from her workout at a gym. I've never been a runner. I have 4 (of 6) siblings who have raced compeetitively either in High School or as an adult, but I have never followed their lead until now. My sister, Lybi, is already on this blog (Confessions of a Piano Teacher) and I love reading her funny commentaries. I'm not nearly as funny or as competitive as Lybi, but I do want to get out there and start running. | |

| I didn't get out yesterday because my husband went cycling instead. But I was tired ALL day long yesterday. So this morning, even though I went to bed at midnight and was awake a few times with babies, I knew I had to get out. Beautiful morning! It rained last night, so it was humid and quite cool at 6:15 (55 degrees - and it's still August!). I ran a little on the downhills just to keep my heart rate up. My neighborhood is very hilly, so it makes for an interesting walk/run. I try to stretch after my run instead of before (which I have always done before) from reading the advice of others on this website. I didn't think I'd be able to run without stretching first, but starting slow and then stretching afterwards feels good. I'm feeling great now, but I'm gonna need a NAP today! | |

| Beautiful morning. I went walking on a different route and tried to run as much as possible (which is not much since I'm still just starting). Last Saturday, I was looking at the races in this area and I've chosen my first race: there's a 5K in 4 weeks that I would like to compete in and use that time as a benchmark. It's so interesting to have a goal! Instead of just running for an ambiguous "be healthy" goal; knowing that I need to be able to run a 5k in a few weeks makes me MUCH more motivated to get out the door and really train. I'm excited! This will be my first time to compete - EVER (in a sport - I've done musical competitions before). | |

| My hip has been really hurting after my last run. It's actually been hurting since I first starting exercising 2 weeks ago, but it got much worse when I started running more. I called my brother-in-law, James, and he recommended to take it easy, get good shoes, and go to the chiropractor. So, I went on the elliptical this morning for half an hour (thus, I estimated about a mile's worth of running). My hip is feeling better today. I have an appt on Friday for a chiropractic adjustment; it actually makes sense that my hip is out of alignment. All during my last trimester, I had to go to the chiropractor all the time because my tailbone and low back were causing me major problems. I don't want to chicken out on my 5K race, but I also don't want to get an injury that will make it impossible to run at all. Ugh. | |

| The elliptical again - half an hour with varying levels of resistance. This is helping with my hip, but I wish I could get outside and run instead. The week is almost over and I had hoped to be able to run half a mile without walking by the end of my first week of training. Ugh. The best laid plans. . . | |

| Well, I finally bought real running shoes yesterday and I also went to the chiropractor. He actually gasped a little and said, "No wonder you've been in pain." When laying on my stomach, my feet were a full inch different in length. I also tried something this morning that a friend told me about; it's called Ceragem and it's a therapeutic massage table that utilizes jade rolling stones that emit far infrared heat. So, you go to the store and they have 20 of these tables that people can just try for 40 minutes for FREE! You can come back as often as you want - in fact they encourage you to. I guess after using it, people love it so much, they're willing to spend the thousands to buy it. I know two people in my ward that have one (one has it for her Fibromyalsia). The salesperson said it might hurt the first time if my back is not doing great - and it did. But, afterwards, I felt more relaxed than a massage therapist - and I felt . . . elongated. Does that make sense. I felt like I was standing taller. Anyway, it was very interesting. I think I'll try it 2 more times next week and if I don't notice a difference, at least I won't be out any money!! My walk/jog/run felt good. It was nice to have better shoes that didn't clomp. I tried jogging at a walking pace like Lybi recommends and I was able to do that for about half the time (not all together). I even tried hard to continue jogging UP the hills thanks to Brent's Rools. Thanks for the push, Brent! Hopefully my hip won't be hurting me tomorrow. We'll see . . . | |

| 2.46 miles in 37:52. Whoosh. Slow, but still - I'm improving. My hip hurt with a dull ache during the whole walk/run, and my left knee started hurting the last mile; but my spirits started feeling better after the 2nd mile. If my joints had been feeling better, I think I might've enjoyed going a little longer. | |

| After my run on Monday I could hardly even walk around the house that day and the next, and yesterday wasn't much better. On Wednesday, my daughter's physical therapist said it is probably bursitis. She said it could be from the pregnancy and the readjusting of my joints, or my low back being so far out of alignment while exercising. She recommended anti-inflammatory meds (if approved by the dr.) and the SuperFeet insoles. I think I'll try the insoles and ibuprofen. I'm going to readjust my training even more - like Lybi had wanted me to from the very beginning (don't you hate it when little sisters are right!?! grrr) So, I'm going to walk/run a mile and keep any running VERY slow 3 days a week. Once I can do this without pain in my hip or knees, then I will keep it at one mile a day for 6 days a week. Then I will slowly increase after that. Considering this schedule, I'm going to shoot for a later 5K race. Instead of Sept 22, I found another one on October 20 and hopefully my body will be ready by then. | |

| I went to the chiropractor again yesterday and this morning when I ran, my hip and knees didn't bother me. My low back complained a little, but hopefully that will go away if I ice it. I was very happy with today's mile. I walked to warm up and then jogged slowly for more than half a mile with no pain in my hip or knees. I was very surprised and it felt good! I stretched afterwards including the back stretching that Kristina recommended. | |

| Quite a cold morning - 50 degrees at 9:30. Whoosh! Hello, autumn! The first half was a little sluggish. My feet had a hard time getting off the ground. The last half was much better. The only bummer about having to go so short a distance while I'm getting my body used to exercise is that by the time I'm finally warmed up, I'm almost done. Ha! | |

| I ran in the evening today because of other appointments in the morning. I usually try to go around 9:00 when both my babies are asleep and while my husband is working downstairs; but Wednesdays will have to be PM runs since Cami has her therapies starting at 8:00 and getting all 3 girls ready and out the door by 7:30 is impressively busy, even with Mike's help. Mike's been getting up at 4:30 to go cycling lately (poor tired man!) and it's been in the 40's lately at that hour! I went a little longer than my one mile per Sasha's suggestion. It was good. Still no pain in my hip or knees, so maybe I'm finally starting to warm up to being active again. I'll keep it slow and steady, though, and look forward to my 5K on October 20th. I asked the 2 marathoners in my book club if they wanted to run it with me, but one will have just run the Long Beach marathon the week before, and the other - St. George. Oh well. I think my husband is going to run it with me, if we can get someone to stay with our girls. Does anyone else hate 1st grade!?!?! My sweet little 6 year old is struggling with her new Special Ed teacher. I'm going to look into other options because I hate seeing her disliking school more and more; and I'm getting phone calls from the teacher saying, "We're having a power struggle over doing math." Come on! This is special ed! Give her a break and try again in half an hour; don't make life miserable! Ugh. | |

| I took the heart rate monitor today to figure out my max heart rate. Right before my steepest hill, I started running and had to convince my legs to keep trudging up the hill. I maxed out at about 194 and my running pace before the hill was 5:24. It's amazing that so many of the bloggers can maintain that pace! At the same time, there is something so liberating about a sprint like that - it's so different from a slow, bumpy jog. I'd love to be able to maintain a sprint for longer than 10 yards. ha, ha!! That's awesome, Sarah and Sasha, that you homeschool!! What curriculum do you use? My sister-in-law uses Thomas Jefferson Education and has me almost convinced that I need to homeschool my children. I'm not sure that I can homeschool my oldest one with special needs because the school is able to offer so many extra services - therapies and specialists. But yesterday I did schedule her therapies (the ones outside of school) to be in the mornings so she can miss more of 1st grade. I don't know if that's much of a solution, but it gives her more time away from a teacher who doesn't seem to work well with her personality. One quick question: my hip doesn't hurt while I run or even right after my run. But the first time I sit down for a long time after my run and then stand up, my hip feels AWFUL! I stretch after my run, but are there hip stretches that I should do? or ice it? or ibuprofen? or . . . I don't know! It's aggravating that my hip never seems to totally feel better. Even when I sleep at night, when I lay on my right hip it hurts a little. Any thoughts? | |

| I should've gone on Saturday. Lazy bones - no better excuse. Today felt good though. I kept it slow and took walking breaks when my breath was really labored. I also took Mike's iPod, which was a fun distraction with upbeat music. It's funny what a little music can do. Those commercials that say "Life needs a soundtrack" are right on! I went to the chiro again and he took x-rays of my low back. We didn't get a chance to go over them; but as I was leaving, he said from a quick look at my x-ray, it's obvious my pelvis is off and it looks like the hip joint is wearing down a little. Ugh. Not what I wanted to hear. | |

| 6.62 miles on a mountain bike on a hill-y trail. My husband took our two youngest girls in the bike trailer, but he still kicked my trash! My legs (and behind) were good and tired when I got home. It was a really good workout for me, much prettier scenery than being on the elliptical, fun to exercise with my husband, and easier on my hip. Yea!!!! | |

| I've been a little scared to run since I saw my chiro on Monday, but I think this morning I've decided to get a second opinion on my hip - from a real doctor instead of a chiro. I meant to take my heart rate monitor this morning so I could answer Sasha's question about what activity causes my heart rate to be at 140, 150 and 160 -- but I forgot. So, I just tried to walk more to keep my heart rate down and more aerobic. My hip hasn't hurt hardly at all today. By the way, that conversation about the oatmeal was very interesting!! This morning I had a hard boiled egg with my oatmeal (I can't remember who mentioned it) and I wasn't hungry for 6 hours!! I couldn't believe it; having just one of those, I would've been hungry within 3 hours, but put them together and it was amazingly satisfying! Amazing the things I'm learning on this blog! | |

| Not a great workout today. I felt tired the whole time and my hip and knee both hurt! I'm starting to come down with a cold too. But . . . at least I got out today! I thought I might take a nap, but decided to run instead. My daughter's starting to feel a little better - she's no longer throwing up, but she's still not eating normally and is overly emotional. | |

| I'm still feeling sick, but I wanted to get out today. I might pay for it later, but it was nice to be out in the autumn air. I could tell my lungs were tired from all the coughing spells I've been having lately. I keep thinking about my 5k coming up and I'm struck with panic and uncertainty: "maybe I'm not ready", "I might make a fool of myself coming in last", "next Springs is a great time to race". On task, Laura! Last place is better than no place at all!!!!! | |

| I finally got out to run - it had been a long time!! When I said that I might pay for my last run (last week), I really did. Plus we went out of town for 5 days and I had back and neck pain. I still have a cough - it doesn't seem to be getting better at all - but I don't have the aches or chills. It was amazingly hard to run today so I found myself walking much more. But I apparently wasn't paying attention to my pace while I was running because my average pace is the same, which means I was running much faster than usual. Oops. I went to a new chiropractor last week. He uses the Active Release Technique and works mostly with athletes. I was amazed and so pleased!! After 6 weeks of never being without hip pain, I actually had NO hip pain for 5 days!! Unfortunately it didn't last because I had a lot of low back issues while I was out of town which probably threw my hip out again. So, I'm going to see him again on Monday. Hopefully I'll get over this plaguing cough soon and be able to run on a daily basis - finally! I've had to take it easy on my hip ever since I began. | |

It was really windy, and I thought about Michelle's post last week where her ponytail was sticking straight behind her. ;o) I felt much better than on Thursday, but I went without the Garmin so I don't know what my pace was like. Congratulations to all the great St Geo Marathoners!!!! Paul - OTQ, that's so awesome!!! James - 43 minute PR is absolutely great!! I haven't had much chance to read the other race reports, but it sounds like everyone did great!!!

| I did my first practice 5k today in 40:00! I was so frustrated that I couldn't find a time on Mon or Tuesday to run, so today I hired a babysitter. My splits were: 1 - 12:53 2 - 13:06 3 - 12:47 last .1 - 1:14 with an average pace of 12:54. This was actually better than I expected. My previous runs were averaging in the 15:00 range so I was worried it would take me over 45 minutes. The extra .3 in my total miles were for warm up and cool down. It was a very different run for me since it's the longest I've gone so far. Usually I just listen to my heart and lungs and when they seem overly labored, I start walking. But with this run, something internal kept saying, "Ugh. What are you doing!" after I passed my normal 1.85 normal distance. I feel good now and am very happy that I was able to do my first 5k without dying. I also found it interesting that I ran differently when I was on the sidewalk then when I was on the trail - knowing that other people were watching me made me less aware of my running. | |

| I took a different route today - it had much longer downhill and uphill stretches. Wowza!!!! The uphill was tough! It wasn't even much easier to walk it. I had our babysitter come again today which was nice. She has the entire week off of school, so I've been utilizing her! 1st mile - 12:00 mostly all downhill ;o) 2nd mile - 13:37 huffing and puffing! | 5k in 41:38. mile 1 - 12:56 mile 2 - 12:46 mile 3 - 14:54 (knee problems!) My hip didn't feel great yesterday after two days of longer runs than usual; and didn't feel great when I started my run today, but after a while it was fine. At mile 2, my left knee hurt and I had to stop. I was able to walk it out, but the next mile, it kept coming and going. I've never had this happen with my knee before. Usually if it hurts, I'm in trouble the entire way home. Very strange. So, it was an okay run/walk/limp today. ha! Although my hip is still much better because of the ART chiropractor, I think I still have to bite the bullet and actually go to a doctor. I'm somewhat doctor-averse. ... I guess that's pretty obvious after complaining for 8 weeks of hip pain. The countdown begins for my first race!! A week from today . . . Ahhhhhhhh!!!! | |

| [I never had time to post my run on Tuesday.] Kept it closesr to 2 miles per Sasha's recommendation. But I still think I want to run one more practice 5K before the race on Saturday. I finally went back to that initial chiropractor who took x-rays of my hips. I wish he hadn't ever said anything in the first place because he scared me quite a bit and was actually wrong in his initial assessment. He initially said my hip looked like it was "wearing down". But on Monday, when we actually went over them, he said that they look fine, but that I need to take it easy. He thought I'd been running all my life, but I told him I'm just beginning and was never even in sports in high school. So, any wear and tear is just because of life; not from 2 months of running!!! I have some curvature in my back, and my hips and knees have had to compensate throughout my life. Anyway, the long and the short of it is - don't take medical advice from a chiropractor! I have a friend who's an avid runner and also a Physician's Assistant. When I was explaining my hip problem, she said that it sounds like my IT band. (I think this is what Heber said that it was too.) She recommended Yoga. In fact, she said if it wasn't for Yoga, she probably wouldn't be able to run at all. And she's done Boston in 3:33. So, I'm going to keep running, try to squeeze in Yoga somehow, and see an orthopoedist (just in case). | |

| Last practice 5K before my race . . . Ummm . . . Blast. For some reason this whole morning, I've been thinking that today is Thursday and that I have tomorrow to take it easy. It wasn't until just now that I realized that TODAY is Friday. Oops. ha, ha, ha. What an idiot. Oh well. It's only a benchmark 5K anyway. In fact, I probably shouldn't have even signed up for it this early on in my training. Sasha is quite right about my distancce - I feel great for the first 2 miles and then I struggle with my silly knees the last mile. So after this race, I'm going to stick to 2 miles for 3-4 weeks. I'm not really sorry that I'm racing, though - I needed something to motivate me and make me excited about running. I just feel a little dumb today that I botched my prep. Oh well. Can't undo it; the accomplishment tomorrow will not be in my finishing time, but in my finishing! BTW, I have an Orthopedist appt next Tuesday. | |

PPRPOM 5K (3.1 Miles) 00:36:37 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 3.10 | 0.00 | 3.10 |
| My first race!!!! Where to begin. . . Well, all day yesterday I worried that I was going to hurt myself if I ran the race today since I wasn't thinking and ran 3 miles that morning. I called my brother, Heber, and he recommended that I massage my legs to help them recovery quicker; and if I still didn't feel good, that it wasn't a bad cause to simply donate the $20 registration fee to (hee, hee). Actually, I had already thought of that; and this morning when I woke up and my legs felt a little sore, I thought about it again. But, I didn't think that I was feeling sore enough to really skip my very first race. So, I got ready and headed out the door. It was a 5K run or a 3K walk for the Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers Memorial. The weather, though chilly in the low 50's while waiting around, was great for running and there was no breeze. It was a flatter course than I've ever run in my practice runs, so that was very helpful! I didn't take my Garmin, so I wouldn't be distracted by how much farther I had to go. This was good for that reason, but also bad because I'm not really sure what my correct finishing time was! When I came in, I saw the clock say 36:37, but on the unofficial report, I came in at 35:55. I'd love to claim the faster time, but I think the 36 is more accurate. And even at 36:37, it's over 4 minutes faster than any of my practice runs. My knee only hurt for about 15 seconds a little after the first mile, and then it didn't bother me at all! My hips felt great too! And I cranked up my iPod, so I didn't even pay attention to my heavy breathing (which was quite distracting, actually, when I could hear it in between each song - ha!) I was able to run almost the entire time, which was amazing for me!!! I only walked about 4 times, and only for a short distance. I don't know my splits since I didn't have my watch, but I felt great the whole time! I told my husband that he did such a great job massaging my legs, that he saved me from a potentially horrible race!!! Plus, he might be stuck doing it next time!!! ;o) The best part of raccing was the distraction of having other runners around me and coming in at the finish line to a smiling husband and my 3 girls!!! Overall, I am very happy with my first race. I was able to run without hurting, enjoy the moment, and come in at a time that I was secretly hoping for (anything around 36 mnutes was my hope, but I would've been content with anything faster than 40:00 which is what I was doing in my practice runs). Yeah!!!! | |

| I just realized that I haven't run a single Monday this entire month!!! What a slacker! I must really hate Mondays more than I consciously realize. ;o) Different route today - again. But it wasn't a great route because there were parts when there was no sidewalk and the snow is melting. Yup, that's right . . . the SNOW!!! On Saturday the temperatures got up in the 70's and we woke up on Sunday morning to a couple inches of snow. Love Colorado! (crazy place) :) Thanks, everyone, for your support in my first race. It was fun and I learned quite a lot about myself and how I race. I've been figuring that I actually could've given more at the very end. So, today when I got to the end of my run and my body was trying to tell me to walk, I kicked it up and sprinted home!!! Orthopedist today said the cartilage (sp?) in my hips is great. It's not my IT band of bursitis. There's a small cyst on the inside of my hip joint that he's not terrible worried about in itself, but he wants an MRI to make sure there's nothing causing it. He also gave me a script for PT. Happy days (except the thought of sitting in a noisy MRI machine for 1/2 an hour!!! I keep thinking about it and getting shivers!) | |

| Great, great run!!!! I was able - for the first time - to run WITHOUT WALKING at all!!!!! I am so happy! After I pushed past the first urge to walk, I made it to a mile and kept thinkin, "Hey, I'm not dying; I can go further." And then, I became determined not to walk until after 2 miles. And then, I figured I might as well make it all the way home! I even kicked it up a notch on the last bit. My splits were: 1 - 11:21 2 - 12:14 .25 - 10:32 Ave - 11:39 I didn't mean to go fast, but that's actually faster than my 5K race average! Maybe it's because I had such a lazy day reading Twilight ... the whole day (ooops). That book is so addicting! I read the whole thing in less than 24 hours and its 500 pages!!! Crazy. I want to start the next book (New Moon), but I think my children need to see my face for a few days without having to peak over a book. lol | |

| What a crazy day!! I ran this afternoon, but haven't had a moment to log it until now (10 p.m.). We had our ward Halloween party tonight and I only had 2 of our 5 costumes done. It was kind of fun, I have to admit. This year I actually did a theme for our costumes: my husband and I were convicts, Cami was a police officer, and the babies were money bags. It turned out cute. But the party was too late for my little ones. Audrey was beside herself by the time we got home; and Hayley wasn't far behind her!! Cami was still feeling sick today, so I'm amazed she did as well as she did at the ward party. The kitchen and house are finally put back together again and I can relax. . . Today's run was a bit of a bummer. I forgot to turn off my iPod the other day, so it was dead; and I didn't realize how much having music was a great distraction for me until I was struggling to keep from walking and finally succombed. Bummer. Also, my left knee bothered me more on my second mile. The orthopedist could tell just be feeling my knees, that my left knee was weaker. Guess I better work on that, huh? | |

| Happy Halloween!!! What a slacker I've been in my running!! Maybe I need to find another race so I have something looming in the future that gets my lazy self out in the freezing cold!! At least I'm done with the Twilight series, though, so I won't be so obsessed with reading instead of doing what I should - like running! I'm not sure I'm totally happy with the ending of the Twilight series, by the way. I spent most of my run today trying to reconcile myself to it. lol I took my old route this morning and almost did it without walking. At my halfway point, my legs started walking without consulting my head first. Ugh. Today was my first day to run in the cold. It was 35 degrees. It wasn't as bad as I thought, although I've been coughing ever since I got home. ha! I think it's somehow a city law that Halloween can't be warm in Colorado Springs! It's been in the 70s until today! It's like that every year - relatively warm until Halloween when all the poor children are dressed up in paper thin Princess or Superman costumes. Poor trick or treaters! Luckily we don't have children who know what they're missing when we don't go Trick or Treating. That lucky window will be closing soon, though, I'm sure, as Hayley gets older. Hee,hee! We went to the Ward trunk or treat but had to leave before the candy was passed out because Audrey was soooo tired. My oldest daughter is on her way to Denver Children's hospital today for a gait analysis. This is the first test of hers that I have not been there for. She's going with Daddy while I stay home with the babies. I feel very weird not being the one to take her. I know it would've been miserable taking the babies - or even just Audrey; but I can't help feeling like I'm the one who has to be there for every medical test or therapy session that she has. The results of the analysis will tell us which braces will be best for her (and if she's over braced right now) and if there are any surgeries that they recommend now or in the future. It's a 3 hour analysis!!! And the report will be about 20 pages long! Crazy, huh? Hopefully it will be very helpful, though. | |

| I thought it was going to be cold today, so I took a long sleeve shirt but it turned out to be too much. By the time I went it was 50 degrees with no wind and plenty of sun. Beautiful day for a run! I went 2 miles at a slower pace but with NO walking!!!!! It's funny -- it seems that if I can get past my halfway point without walking, then I can always make it home without walking. It's that first half that's the hardest mentally, and even physically, for me. | |

| Good run this afternoon. No walking and no pain!!! The only problem with waiting to go running until it warms up a little is that I don't end up showering till the afternnon and I feel like a sloth the whole morning. I might have to figure something else out. I went today at 1:00 and it was 45 degrees. Running much colder than that is tough; after I run, I end up coughing for the rest of the day. So. . . we'll see. Today I might've had an inkling of what the "zone" feels like. On my second mile, I realized that I didn't have to convince my legs to keep going - it was just automatic and my breathing had finally found a rhythm that wasn't so close to huffing and puffing. It was quite an epiphany, actually. | |

| I had a couple of firsts today!!! First time to run 3.1 miles without ANY walking! First time to run in the early evening as the sun was setting (I'm a bit of a safety freak - I always vary my running time and route)! And it was my first week to run 4 days in a row!!! Yea!!!! 5K in 37:07 minutes - only about 30 seconds slower than my race, which I was very happy about! My splits were: 1 - 11:25 2 - 12:39 (gradual uphill the whole time) 3 - 11:57 I started walking after the 3.1 benchmark and then stopped to talk to a neighbor, so my other times are not very helpful. The only problem I had on this run was with my back ... well, actually my rib! This silly rib has been giving me problems off and on for a month now. It usually only bugs me when I cough; but after 3 miles, I couldn't breathe deeply without being in a lot of pain. So when I came home, I massaged it, and now I'm feeling much better. But it's probably time to head back to the chiropractor. I think the rib issue is just an occupational hazard of having little ones to pick up all the time, plus I'm still nursing. But other than the rib - no knee or hip problems, no walking, and I'm feeling great!!!! | |

| I finally broke my 7 week record of not running on Mondays today. (It's about time!!!) Both babies were asleep and the weather's unusually warm this morning, so I turned the baby monitors up loud for my husband to hear and headed out the door!! Beautiful morning - a little chilly with the wind - but sunny and happy. No walking again today! Brent, you were right about the 3 mile hurdle. Now that I've gone 3 miles, I certainly don't want to wimp out on the 2 milers. I feel like I'm finally improving. The first 2 months felt like such slow progress, it almost felt like a hopeless cause. But now I'm more confident and stronger! | |

| It was a beautiful, warm autumn day - amazing for November! Unfortunately it was one of those days that I hung out in my sweats all day without showering ... waiting for an opportunity to run; but it paid off! Two miles on a dirt path. No walking. I didn't take the Garmin today - just the iPod. I had to put a few new songs on since I was getting tired of the same old tunes. | |

| 5K in 35:22!!!!! That's over a minute faster than my race time!!!! Woohoo! It's funny; I thought I was doing terrible. The first mile and a half were on a gradual uphill and I wasn't sure I was going to make it without walking; and then the way home was getting dark and I couldn't check my pace. So, when I finally looked at 3.1 miles, I was soooo surprised and happy! I've thought a lot about what you said, Brent. I'm going to work to make sure none of my runs are "uneventful." I can see that feeling blah about my running will lead to not wanting to run more - and then stopping eventually. So, I'm going to look for something in each run that makes it eventful and interesting! I told this to Lybi and she said I could always TP a car or something. ha,ha - probably not what you had in mind, huh, Brent! But it sure would make it eventful!! ;o) | |

| Woohoo, I ran on a Monday again! I took the heart rate monitor today, just for kicks. I'm quite certain now that my route is downhill on the way home because my heart rate kept getting lower and lower as I headed home. But I was actually surprised the my actual heart rate was not much lower than it was over a month ago. I still get up in the 170 range, and even 180's when I'm really dying (steep uphill). But on my way home, when I'm warmed up and going slightly downhill, my heart rate was in the 150's and 160's. So I'm not sure if my cardio has really improved yet or not. I know my will power has improved - to push through the desire to walk. But I think I'll check my heart rate again in a month or so. My pace is still pretty consistent - average 11:52 (faster for downhill stretches, and slower for uphill, obviously). | |

| It's been a loooong week! My husband has been out of town and my oldest daughter has been throwing up and had diarrhea 3 times this week. I know that I could've done aerobics after the kids went to bed at night, but I never seemed to have it in me. So today, I think I headed out for my run within an hour of him getting home! It was a tough run (which I knew it would be since I haven't been out since Monday!) but my pace didn't suffer and I still didn't walk. So, here's for husbands coming home from business trips!!!!! HALLELUJAH!!!! (My poor husband -- when he finally got home, all 3 children had been crying/screaming for the last hour and a half and nothing I could do was enough; I could comfort 2 of them, but the third would be crying! So by the time he got home, I was in tears to see him too! I told him that I was so happy to have him home, even if -for the moment - it was 95% because he could help me!! Long week.) | |

| I got out earlier this morning and was feeling great, but started to feel so tired that I turned around early (I was afraid I would wimp out and start walking). But when I got to my street, I was bummed that I wouldn't have at least 2 miles, so I kept running. And then I kept telling myself that I would run to a certain spot and then turn around, but when I got there I kept going!! ha,ha! So, I ended up getting a decent run in anyway! I sure have felt tired and wasted all day -- maybe I'm coming down with what my daughters have. Eeech. Ave pace: 11:39 | |

| I'm not even going to make excuses for last week. Even though it was cold, I could've done aerobics or the elliptical. So . . . moving forward! I'm determined to run every day this week!!!! Today's run was very slow and highlighted by many dogs scaring the life out of me! I don't usually have a problem with dogs, but today, I must've smelled especially suspicious. When I got home, I couldn't find my husband or the girls but I noticed there was a voice mail; when I checked it, it was my husband!! He had forgotten a doctor's appointment and, since I never carry my phone when I run, he had to take both babies to his appointment. Poor Daddy! I've had to do that many times and it is so un-fun. ;o) | |

| I didn't have much time between having the missionaries over for lunch and a doctor's appointment, but I didn't want to fail on my goal on the 2nd day! So, I ran to my friend's house to lend her a book. Although it was a short run, it was a mammoth hill (I have conveniently avoided going that direction on all my runs just to avoid it!) I'm terrible at remembering to eat after my runs. Yesterday, I only ate a granola bar after my run, and that evening I kept feeling sick and ache-y until after dinner. Ridiculous, huh? I thought I was just getting more sick (I have a sore throat and the sniffles - who doesn't this time of year!?!) but when I felt better after eating, I knew I had not replenished my system enough after running. Duh. My doctor's appt was yuck. I've had a stye in my eye ever since February and it has never gone away! So, I finally had it lanced today. Yuck. I hate eye things!!! I was white knuckling it and almost hyperventilating during the whole procedure. I hope I NEVER have to do that again! | |

| Man, I have GOT to remember to take gloves tomorrow! Yesterday and today, my hands were freezing for the first mile. Luckily, I finally warm up; but it sure is uncomfortable! It's above freezing when I go, but it's been windy lately. I'm apparently very clumsy these days: yesterday I tumbled down the stairs and today I tripped and fell on my run (on the gravel, as I was turning around). When I first started this run, my shoulders were so sore from my lovely fall down the stairs that I was practically grunting! But after a while, the pain subsided. So, it was actually a nice run today, even considering the soreness in my back and the fall. It's weird when you can say that, huh? But when I came home and was stretching out, I was thinking how much I'm enjoying running. | |

| It was much warmer today so I didn't need to try running with gloves, but it was so windy that I almost lost my hat a couple times! I don't know if it was because of the wind, or my last 2 weeks of slacking, or the handful of contraband Oreo's before my run (that gave me a slight cramp the whole time-- though still worth it!) but I couldn't seem to go very fast. So I just went as fast as my body wanted to go, which was only 12:26 ave pace. After my run and stretching, I took a really hot bath instead of a shower and right now I feel GREAT!!! The bath helped the muscles that were still tender from my many tumbles lately. Although it was hard to get out the door today, I feel great now! | |

| I did it!! Six days in a row - finally!!!!!! I have to admit I was pretty tired on today's run, but I did it and I feel (to borrow from Michelle) JOYFUL AND TRIUMPHANT!! I like to celebrate every little achievement! And I feel like a true runner today because I ran through the rain. Somehow that seems like a rite of passage or something. We had a book club luncheon at my house today - our once a year tradition. We read Ladies Auxiliary, which is set in a Jewish Orthodox society; and since we're a few days away from Hannakah, I decorated in blue and white and someone brought latkes. It was fun. Christmas is going to be much more fun this year since our 6 year old is finally very excited about the tree and presents - and our 1 year old is actually leaving the tree alone (partly out of fear - it scratched her as we were setting it up and she hasn't forgiven it!) Have a Merry Christmas season, everyone! | |

| This was a true Monday. There was nothing that went wrong, but I felt *blah* all day and just wanted to sleep or take a holiday from being a Mom. That defines a true "Monday" to me - inherently a bummer due only to its existence. ;o) My legs felt great on today's run and my pace is finally back to where it was before Thanksgiving, without pushing it. I don't know why today was so hard, but it felt -mentally- like the hardest run so far. I've had others where my legs hurt more, or my lungs were heaving, but today ... something else was just unwilling to run. I hope consistency will pay off and tomorrow's run won't be quite so bad. On a side note - I had a BUG fly into my EYE while I was running today! Not my eyelid...my eye! Weird, huh? Poor thing met its death soon after. Pay attention while you're flying, eh? | I think this whole week is turning out to be a tough one for running. I feel beat up. Maybe I need to work harder on getting to bed earlier. I'm still waking up once to nurse, and then the kids are all up around 6:00 or 6:30. Going to bed at 11:00 is not cutting it. Windy today, but still warm. It was 49 degrees; yesterday was an amazing 68 degrees ... in December! ... in Colorado Springs!! I'm gonna see if I can go sneak in a nap while the babies are asleep. | |

| No running today. My foot was hurting a little this morning, and as after shopping and a RS Christmas party, it is now hurting so much that I'm limping horribly. It's the same foot that I hurt when I fell down the stairs last week; but I've been able to run on it 3-4 times since then -- so why is it starting to hurt now? I think it's sprained, so I wrapped it and I'm going to take some ibuprofen when I go to bed tonight. We'll see how it's doing tomorrow. | |

| Well, my foot is finally feeling good enough to run. I had it wrapped and limping for 2 days; the 3rd day I was hurting everywhere else from limping; and the 4th day the pain was almost completely gone. So really, I should've gone running yesterday but I was absorbed in a book again. Today, I can finally say that I ran through the snow, while it was snowing, and when it was below freezing (all 3 firsts for me!) The snow made downhill a dream - easy and padded. Uphill was tough, though. I had to laugh at my outfit, too -- I was so worried that I didn't have warm enough running gear, so I piled on everything I could think of. So, while I was running in 2 pairs of socks, 2 pants, 2 shirts, a windbreaker, a hat, and a scarf .... I remembered Sasha saying that 20 degrees was the borderline for him between shorts or pants. I was running in 25 degrees, and would've died in shorts! Of course, I only went 2 miles (rather than 7-15 that he runs) and was comfortable the first mile and carrying my scarf and gloves on the second mile. lol Glad I finally got out. I was actually missing it. (Never thought I'd feel that way about running - that is progress all in itself, isn't it?) | |

| This is actually a guesstimate on my mileage because my garmin wigged out for some reason. I actually ran in the dark tonight and it wasn't nearly as scary as I always thought it would be. I was dreading going on the elliptical tonight, so even though it was 15 degrees and dark, I bundled up and went running. I only wore 1 shirt this time (see my abominable snowman gear from my last run) and didn't take my scarf, but I used a ski mask for my cheeks and face. I really liked the ski mask -- even though it got a little hot on the uphills, it was great for the downhills. It was a little icy out tonight, but I never tripped, luckily. I went without my iPod so I could be aware of my surroundings, and it was actually enjoyable -- it was so peaceful and I just listened to the rhythm of the crunching snow and my breathing, while I sang Christmas carols in my head. I wanted to go a little longer, but chickened out in the end. Nice run - felt great! | |

| I tried Yoga tonight. It was hard on my wrists with all the down dogs (I don't even know if that's correctly spelled for yoga) but it was good for my arms. I think I'll try adding it on after a run sometime because I missed the workout that running is for my legs. |

| My garmin is really acting weird! It said that my run today was 3.8 miles, when I know it was closer to 3.1. Plus, I'm sure that my average pace was not 8 something, like it was saying. Very odd. Is there someway to fix a garmin that's acting up?? Anyway ... it was a tricky run today because half of it was on ice and snow with hardened footprints. Luckily, I never slipped, though I did throw my arms in the air once I told myself that my ankles were getting a workout by trying to keep me steady on a very uneven sidewalk. ;o) | |

| My mileage is a guesstimate again because I went without the Garmin - but I think it's pretty accurate. I really didn't want to run on ice today, so I ran my trail route twice. It was actually pretty hard to start that second time out - partly because it's uphill again. But I'm glad that I did it. Besides that hard section, it was actually a great run. I'm now able to run without an iPod and survive (hee, hee). The only thing that's been bugging me this evening is my left heel. About an hour after my run my it started aching to step on it. Hopefully it'll be gone tomorrow. BTW, we've had great weather so far this week - in the 40's and no wind!! I could really get used to running all winter in this weather! | |

| I chickened out on night running this evening and went on the elliptical instead. It was a good workout; it was harder on my legs than my cardio - but that's probably a good thing for cross-training. I also did stetching and push-ups when I got bored of the elliptical. The whole workout was about 45 minutes. |

But when I went at 1:30, it was cloudy and windy instead of sunny and calm. At least I got in my run before the snow started! ;o) I took the garmin today and apparently it's doing better because it read my distance correctly. I tried something new today - I used the "alerts" to tell me when I was running slower than 12:30. Ha! After going uphill for a while, the poor alert was going off all the time as I was getting more and more pooped. My average pace was 11:37.

| Well, I only made it out 4 times this week which is a bummer - but on the positive side, they were all over 3 miles! I'm going to have to try to earn those Garmin commando points in a week or two, Brent, because as James (Monaflash) says, that alert thing can be down right irritating! It was back to cold today - good bye to the nice 40 degree highs that we've had this week. It was 27 when I went. I hope Santa gets me some warm running gear. ;o) It's 3 days till Christmas and I still haven't sent out my Christmas cards. But I can't even send them because I haven't received them in the mail yet. It seems like every January, I tell myself that this year I'm not going to procrastinate taking family pictures ... and then ... October... November... I think I actually grunted a couple times during the run. And guess what? I actually ran faster going gradually uphill, rather than downhill (the last mile). I kept trying to keep my pace up that last mile, since it's all gradual downhill and usually much easier. But I was tired today or something. ave pace 11:12 | |

Well, I'm not sure what happened to my morning run blog, so I'll just add it on to my race report.
I went running in the morning and got in 3.33 miles in this lovely flat terrain of Phoenix! My average pace was 10:57, which is faster than in Colorado but slower than my Phx run on Saturday. In the afternoon, Lybi convinced me to run a race that night (which is crazy for both of us - I had already run today and she was still hurting from her 12 miler on Saturday, but it sounded too run to be able to run together!!!)
We showed up an hour before the race and I registered (while Lybi ran "bandit" - shh! don't tell). It was surprisingly cold for Phoenix, or at least my nerves made it feel cold. The temperature was only 49, but we kept getting in the car to warm up. Lybi recommended we jog around and do strides for a warm up, so I added .5 miles to my total distance.
When the race finally started, Lybi had the Garmin and she would check it for our pace periodically. Our goal had been 10:00 for the 1st mile, and then 9:30 for the next 2. I had the best pacer in the world!!!! Lybi talked the ENTIRE way! :) She rattled on about running technique, how I was doing great, or goals that she had for the coming year. I seriously don't know how she did it! I love her!!! The first mile was good; I could tell it was faster than usual, but it wasn't demanding too much up front. The second mile felt harder (as it should), but Lybi kept talking and stayed 1 step ahead of me but still to the side - so I was always reaching to keep up with her. During the third mile, Lybi had us pick up the pace and we tried to play "games" to keep me from winding down. She would race ahead of me and I had to catch up and pass her, then she would pass me. I was surprised I had any energy left to pass her. My breathing was getting very heavy and a cramp in my back was hurting with each breath. I kept wanting to swing me head and flail my arms (what a wimp, I know!). When we finally turned for the home stretch (Lybi said it was about half a lap), we tried to pick up the pace again. I couldn't keep it up for long and started slacking, but then I heard footsteps behind me and found more energy! The last 50 yards, I heard some fast footsteps behind me, and as Lybi peeled off away from the course, I laid everything on the line so this person couldn't pass me. I sprinted as fast as I could, but he had more momentum and passed me within 10 feet of the finish line. Grrr. And, it turns out, he was 67 years old. Grrr. Oh well, he got me to pick it up at the very end, so I can't begrudge him too much. ;o)
Overall, it was a great race - I wish I could always race with Lybi!!!! She kept me diverted and focused on giving more. And my pace really showed her help:
mile 1 - 9:30
mile 2 - 9:46
mile 3 - 9:22
I don't think those numbers quite add up, so Lybi will have to put the accurate numbers. But my official time was 28:50!!!!!! We were trying to figure out how to compare that to my last 5K and I think it means that I would've been sub-30 for a 5K and shaved off 6 minutes from my last time of 36:37!!!!!!!!!!!! Woohoo!!!!! (I'll let Sasha correct the comparison, if I was wrong)
So, flat terrain, lower altitute, and a great sister made for a very fun race to ring in the new year! HAPPY NEW YEAR, FRB!!!
