AM: 5 on trails with pups + 3 more on roads alone near house in 11:22 avg pace. I forgot my heart rate monitor at work yesterday and it felt nice to run without it for a change. I should probably try to run sans watch a few times a week- would probably do me some good instead of looking at these incredibly slow paces. Avg elevation: 8,500', 1,170' gain/loss. Beautiful morning for a run. Legs felt pretty good, still some stiffness in lower legs- probably from all the trail running the last couple weeks. Need to do some stretching and foam rolling this evening.

Nice run. You gotta love spring. Bet the pups enjoyed the weather as much as you did. I have never run with a heart rate monitor. We have one for the treadmill but have never used it. Might have to try it some time. Of course then I would have to figure out what my heart rate is supposed to be. :)

Yes, I do love the spring. Perfect running weather for everyone.

I never wore a heart rate monitor until I started running up at 8500'. I was interested in knowing what the differences in my heart rates were between running at home and running in Boulder (~5500). I was also worried that maybe I was training at too high of intensity up at home because every run felt hard. They still feel hard (or at least harder than in boulder), but I can sort of gauge how hard I should be running up a hill based on how high my heart rate is spiking. I don't know if the heart rate monitor has helped my training or not though and it's also hard to then determine what my heart rate should be if I run at sea level.. But it's data and I do like data :)

In your situation with the altitude I can definitely see why you like to monitor your heart rate. And I would be shocked if a Phd. did not like data! :)
