Ran cross country and track all throughout high school. Met a lot of great people and enjoyed the races, travel time, and the overall process for all four years. I made varsity several times throughout high school, but had to work quite a bit for it as well. Overall, had a great experience with it though!

AM- Crossfit Bootcamp once again at the Rec Center. My body is completely sore from yesterday's workout, even though it wasn't a very hard workout. Today was a total body weight workout. Half mile warmup, then 6 rounds of 24 air squats, 24 pushups, 24 walking lunges, and a 400m run. As far as strength work goes, I am quite weak from not doing anything besides running for the past few months, but I want to be able to get stronger with some of the core exercises and even weights.

Eugene, I would like sub 2:50, but I have mainly focused on longer endurance runs during this marathon build up, which is different from what I have done before, so I am not sure what I can do.

AM- Well, all I can say is that injuries happen in running. Whether you are young or old, it seems that some time in most people's running career, they are bound to end up with an injury at some point. Since about January, I have had hip pain and lock ups during many of my training runs, and I have just tolerated it since then. Strides and somewhat speed work would never feel quite right, and my overall stride and cadence hasn't felt good since December. I went for my goal pace from the gun, but my hip started to lock up and hurt almost immediately. Had to stop several times starting at about mile 8 or 9, and just sort of shuffled my way to the finish line. When I finished, my legs were not even tired, because of the slow pace, so I know that I will recover quite quickly from this marathon, which is one positive thing from this race. And even though it was a very disappointing race, I still tried my best to enjoy the race. Probably going to take some time off from serious training for a week or two, and just do some cross training, and maybe run only if I feel like it. First, I need to go to some chiropractor/specialist to get my hip feeling 100% again. Then I will focus on my summer/fall build up races!

AM- 3 mile walk today. So I just want to update on the blog with my health and what is concerning me, my doctor, and my family. Overall since around late December/early January, running has just not felt the same. I have not been enjoying my runs, and haven't had a lot of energy to complete workouts, such as tempos and speed. On Wednesday, I ran home from my anatomy class, which was about 7 miles, and felt pretty bad all throughout the run. When I got home, my blood glucose level was almost 600. Finally got the blood glucose down to somewhat a safe range, and went to play my 7 on 7 soccer game that night. Breathing felt bad and my body just felt weak. On Thursday, I ran 10.5, and was breathing very hard at about 8:30-8:45 pace, which is definitely not normal for me, because that should be a very easy and relaxed recovery run for me. Once I got home, my family and I decided that I needed to go see my doctor. Turns out I have lost quite a bit of weight over the course of the last ten days (over 10 lbs). My lymph nodes are swollen and I am anemic, which explains why my body is always cold, and I just don't have the energy or motivation to run or do much physical activity in general. My doctor is having me do more blood work on Monday, to get more of a good diagnosis as to what all is going on with my body. As of right now, I am not allowed to run, just walk for the next two weeks until I have a follow up appointment with my doctor. I am hoping that there is nothing too serious going on, but whatever it takes for me to feel like myself again, I will definitely be doing my best to get healthy. I know this is a long post, but I just felt like I wanted to share what has been going on lately. Even though it is frustrating that I don't know when I will be able to run again, I know that I will come back a stronger and happier runner, once I get myself feeling better. Over the next two weeks, even though I will just be walking, I will still post here and there, just to stay updated on the blog.

AM- 3.3 mile walk from home. Went to the doctor this morning, and she said that my health has improved enough that I can start my running back up tomorrow. She wants me to go by feel and keep the mileage low for now. Anywhere from 3-6 miles for now. I am glad to be back running tomorrow!

Even though it was slow, I felt decent for not running for a little over two weeks. Probably gonna try to do around 5 everyday this next week, then bump up the mileage, based on how my body is feeling.

AM- 6.2 miles from Aggie. 7:33 average pace. Didn't get a run in yesterday, because of lots of homework catchup from the trip to Salt Lake this past weekend. It was a really fun trip with the anatomy class. We went up to Utah State in Logan and did an tour/interaction in the cadaver lab. Even though it was a bit sketchy in the lab, I actually thought it was quite interesting to say the least. Glad I didn't get sick and vomit in the lab though lol! On Sunday, my family and I made a good trip to Lagoon Amusement Park as well, which was a blast. Overall a fun weekend! Next Wednesday, I am running the Murray 4th of July 5k, and even though I am not in the shape I would like to be right now, because of my recent health issues with type 1 diabetes, I am just going to do the best I can and have fun on the 4th!

Ran right around 7:35 pace for the whole thing, and even though it was my slowest time ever running this race lol, I was happy with my effort today, because it is the first time 7:30's felt easy for me since all the health issues lately. Also I have gained back about 10 lbs from only weighing 112 lbs two weeks ago, so that is definitely promising. I am hoping that I can only progress from here on out, and not have these issues again with my T1D. Ended up doing a 4.4 mile cooldown afterward, then watched the parade.

Training alone is fun if you have a real drive to push yourself, but I couldn't wake up before 6AM to save my life unless it was to run with my goofball xc teammates. I always thought it was funny how the best XC team Uintah ever saw was also the craziest... Mason, Aaron, Christian and I were terrible role models(I still feel bad about yelling at Jordan to f himself in front of everyone at team camp(even if he deserved it for cheating at tug of war)), and then we had Kedric constantly making bad puns and you talking about scalping people with your Apache tomahawkes... it was so fun.

AM- Well, I didn't think that I was going to accomplish what I did today at all. I signed up for the McCoy Flats Death Race about three months ago. This was before I became really sick with my type 1 diabetes, and ended up losing about 15 lbs of muscle. This race was really interesting, because it started at 6 am, everyone has to run four miles in one hour, and start again every hour, on the hour. So if you finished in 40 minutes, you have 20 minutes of rest before you start your next four miles. The winner of the race is the last man standing! My plan was to stay right around 9:00-10:00 minute/miles, which I actually was able to stay quite consistent with. Started out with about 80-90 participants, and it slowly dwindled down to about 7 of us by 1 pm. Temps were right around 100 degrees, and it was very hard to stay cool out there today. From early in the morning, I really tried my best to stay hydrated and eat enough to fuel me, but not too much to where I would start having extreme side aches throughout the race, since I only had roughly 20-25 minutes left after each round. By 2 pm, I had ran definitely ran the farthest ever in my life, and there were only four of us left in the race. I felt strong until I hit our 9th round, which was 36 miles. At this point, I just wanted to be done, but I did my best to stay mentally tough and discipline myself to stay in the fight. Once we were on our 10th round of the 4 mile trail route, I could tell that Jason Holt, who came out for the race from South Ogden was hurting pretty bad, because he basically started cramping and walking from the start of the 10th round. It was just Casey McKee, me, and a younger lady from Heber, Utah. Jason ended up dropping out on this 10th round, which meant that I would for sure get top three. Once I got to about mile 3 of this 10th round, I basically hit the biggest wall of my life. Combining with the heat, dehydration, muscle cramping, I knew that I was going to be done after this 10th round. Since Casey finished this 10th round before me, and I that I came in before the lady from Heber, we just decided to end it there, with Casey taking first, me taking second place, and the lady taking third. Once I finished my 10th round, I headed straight for the ice water trough that they had for us there. (Really thankful they had this for us!). Anyways, really glad that I did this race, even though I will need some extreme recovery and food/water intake for the next couple of days. I am also really happy with my results of reaching the farthest I have ever ran today with 42 miles. (this is because the course was about 4.2 miles every round, so a little farther than the standard of 4 miles, like they said.) Ultra marathons are definitely a beast in themselves, and a lot different than any type of race that I have done!

AM- Ran the Sheep Creek 10k this morning. Not much of a warmup, because we had to drive almost an hour and a half to get to where they bus you to the start of the 10k race. I wanted to go somewhat hard during this race, but not to overdue it. First two miles in 6:00 and 6:15. This portion had some good downhill in it, so it wasn't very difficult. Next two miles: 6:26 and 6:56. Was starting to slow down during this portion of the race, but was actually starting to feel better. Last two miles were 6:48 and 6:53. Probably the last four miles of the race were taken somewhat conservative, but I was still pushing the pace to some degree of effort. Mile cooldown afterward. I got my CBC lab results back from last Wednesday, and I am still quite anemic with a hemoglobin level of 10.0 and iron at 24. This can definitely cause some of the symptoms that I have had as of late, like shortness of breath, dizziness, etc. I felt better today than I thought I would though, and I am still working towards getting better from where I was at two months ago.

Not really any particular reason, just kind of started to be my day off from running to get "recharged" for the next week of training lol! Might start running on Sundays after Chicago though.

AM- Today we I ran the Ashley 50 Mile Ultra Relay as a two-man team with my old high school cross country teammate, Austin Valentine. I did this same relay last year as a four-man team, so this year I wanted to try something different and do the two-man instead. I am pretty sure that the total distance was actually a little bit over 48 miles, based on the strava data and leg distances. My first two legs were pretty difficult with over 1,000 ft climb in 6.6 miles for my first leg, and then about 550 ft of climbing in my second leg, which was about 4 miles. I ended up having some pretty bad cramping in these legs, because of the hills and maybe because of my low iron levels. Still working on getting that back to normal. My last two legs had more downhill, which was nice because I could really start to pick it up towards the end. We ended up taking second place overall, so we were happy with the results. It was also a nice day of a long run!

AM- 2 mile shakeout on the treadmill. Endo appointment today in Salt Lake for a diabetes checkup. Also running a 5k in South Jordan later tonight, which should be fun!

PM- Ran a 5k tonight after my diabetes appointment. The race started at about 7 pm, and I my legs were feeling pretty fresh tonight, but I wasn't sure how well my breathing would hold up with my low iron levels. Did a mile warmup, then did a few strides and some drills. Went out too quick, at about 5:30 pace. This was a mistake, because it more than likely made my breathing worse. 6:25 first mile. Legs were feeling pretty good, but my breathing was definitely suffering after that first mile split. Slowed down quite a bit for the second mile in 7:00. Interestingly, I was somewhat able to break through some of my shortness of breath in the last mile and focus on a pace somewhere around 6:40-6:45. This 5k was short, being about 2.7. 2 mile cooldown afterwards on the Jordan River Parkway Trail. Just going to continue watching how I feel when I push the pace, and try to make some good progress!

AM- Made sure to take today slowe, because of Big Cottonwood on Saturday. Had a few thoughts in my mind on this run about my race strategy for Saturday. I would love to run anything under 2:55, yet I am not completely convinced that I can hold that for all 26.2 miles. Although I have a better chance for this race, because of the major downhill in this race. I am going to give it my best to hold 6:30-6:35 pace for as long as I can. This week I have done a few pickup miles at around this pace to see how it feels with my low iron/hemoglobin. Sometimes it feels pretty good, and other times it is a difficult effort. RACE- Actually had a fairly decent race today, considering that I have been struggling with low iron/hemoglobin levels lately, which did still have somewhat effect on me towards the end of today's race. 3 am wake up call this morning to make it to the buses for the drive up the canyon. Didn't really any jogging prior to the race, since I knew I would warm up in the first couple of miles or so. This race had major downhills that in places were somewhat painful, and my quads could already feel it by mile 5. Kept a pretty consistent effort of around 6:25-6:30 throughout the race, until I got to the out and back section of the course. Legs started to tighten up and cramp at this point in the race, which was around miles 18-20. Got somewhat back into a good pace the last 3 miles, and tried to stay strong until the finish. Overall happy with the effort today, and excited for Chicago in four weeks!

As my goal is to run in all the Abbott World Marathon Majors, I am very excited to knock out my first one in the Chicago Marathon! Since I raced Big Cottonwood Marathon just a month ago, I am not expecting anything great at this race, however I will still try to put in a good effort and I might actually surprise myself. AM- Chicago Marathon 2019: What a great experience today running my first Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Woke up at 4:30, ate some breakfast, then got ready to take the subway over to the starting line. With 45,000+ runners, getting into the corral took quite a bit of time, and I didn't have much spare time to use the bathrooms, get warmed up, and just get mentally prepared for the race. Also, I couldn't find the gear check for my corral, so I just had to put my drop off bag in some bushes at the park, since I only had 5 minutes to get into my corral. Got into the starting corral, and moments later we were off and running. I wasn't expecting a lot during this race, since I had just previously ran Big Cottonwood last month and my legs were feeling a bit sluggish with the traveling and everything. Stayed with the 3 hour pace group for several miles, but then fell off of them in the latter stages of the race. Once I got to miles 18-20, I really wanted to just enjoy the experience of the race and that is just what I did. Overall, I would say that this was one of my favorite races that I have ever done, and that I definitely will be back in the future to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon!

AM- 10k easy on kid's canal. For the week or two, I am going to just being doing shorter runs and going very easy to let my body recharge for my spring training and build up towards Phoenix Marathon in February and Boston in April. I just realized the other day that after Boston in April, I will have ran 5 marathons in a 12 month period, and this does not include my 42 mile ultra race in July and the Ashley 50 mile relay in August, which was basically a marathon, since I ran 25 miles in that race. Overall, I want to have a really good build up for Phoenix and possibly Boston, so having some down time from high mileage for the next couple of weeks I think is important. It might seem like an out of range goal for me, but if I can stay healthy and get my iron levels up, I think that sub 2:50 at either Phoenix or Boston is quite realistic. And even though winter training will be difficult with the cold temperatures, I am going to give it my best at both races!

PM- 10k commute from Aggie. 7:31 average. I was positive that my blood sugars were really good on this run, but sadly when I got home they were above 400mg/dl. Speaking of which, I know that my easy paces would be considerably faster, if I could get my blood sugar down on my runs, but it seems as though the majority of the time they just stay really high when I go running. I am guessing that most, if not all, of the runners on this blog don't know what running with high blood sugars feel like. Running with high blood sugars involves a lot of fatigue, leg cramping, and sometimes heavy breathing when the blood sugar levels are extremely high. I am not trying to reach out for simpathy or anything like that, but I need to figure out ways to keep my BG down on my runs, because it really effects my overall performance. Anyways long post, but both of my runs felt pretty good today considering the high BG's.

AM- 6.2 miles out towards Naples, and then making loops around home for the last 2 miles. My right ankle felt stiff for the first mile, but after that it started to loosen up.

PM- 8.5 miles on the TM. 7:32 average. Ankle felt better on this one versus earlier this morning. I also think that I might try to go for my first 100 mile week as long as weather cooperates nicely.

AM- 6.2 miles easy. 8:01 average.

PM- 8.5 miles after studying for finals. 8:01 average.

PM#2: 8 miles making loops around Aggie. 8:30 average.

I experienced really low blood sugars on both afternoon runs, which didn't feel great. Not as bad as hyperglycemia though.

Careful with the triples. They're easier ways to rack up mileage but I think there's probably reason behind most people not training that way. Even with my affinity for mileage I didn't start tripling until I had about 8 straight 100-mile weeks under my belt. My training can be way too crazy at times to tell someone not to do something, I just hope you aren't planning on tripling for the rest of the week.

Eugene, yeah I am definitely not planning on doing any more triples for the rest of the week. My third run yesterday was kind of a spur of the moment thing, because I needed to clear my head after studying for finals. Also I am planning on hitting my first 100 mile week this week.

good luck, hopefully I'll be hitting it with ya! just wait until you get hooked on triples.

AM- 10k out to Naples and back. Legs felt a little sluggish after yesterday's triple, but other than that everything was pretty good. 8:32 average. Fully into finals week now!

PM- 10.5 miles starting from Vernal Park. Also capped off the week from Monday to Sunday with 103.5 miles. This is a big weekly mileage PR, and also my first 100 mile week ever! If I were to increase my mileage consistently to this amount, I would probably do a lot more of my mileage on soft surface, because I think that the pavement beat my legs up somewhat from this big mileage week. I also need to get my iron levels checked again or go to a blood drive and see if they deny me for too low of iron, because my breathing and the legs didn't always feel quite right. I will also probably take Monday and Tuesday off from running this week, and let my legs recover a bit.

nice! those weighted sit ups sound tough. i did weighted russian curls yesterday, thinking it only works the core, and my hamstrings were so sore today i could barely squat

From Kenny the Apache on Sat, Dec 28, 2019 at 18:58:35 from 65.48.74.201

Yeah, the weighted situps are definitely more challenging than regular ones, but I think that the benefits are much higher as well. Also that is interesting that weighted russian curls would cause your hamstrings to be sore. Good to hear you are hitting the weights and core work!

AM- Would have ran outside for the last run of the year, but it was pretty chilly out this morning, so I just went with the treadmill this morning and still had a decent medium long run! It is crazy to think that this year is already over. 2019 brought many high and low points for me throughout the year. I ran three marathons, one of which was my first marathon major at Chicago, and I also ran what I consider one of the hardest challenges I have ever done and that was the 40 mile Death Race in the middle of July! I have some big goals in 2020 that I really want to accomplish throughout the year! #1: Run the Boston Marathon and potentially run a personal best in the marathon at that race. #2: Get a 4.0 GPA in one of my college semesters in 2020. #3: Manage my type 1 diabetes to the best of my ability, and maintain a good a1c. #4: If I run the Death Race again, try to get as close to 100 miles in the race as possible. #5: Continue to enjoy life, explore new places, and continue to embrace running as much as possible. Anyways, long post but I am very thankful for everyone that has been apart of my life over the past year and decade. I hope everyone has had great experiences in life over 2019, and even greater ones in 2020!
