I FINALLY got my biggest running goal I have set for myself- under 20 in the 5k. It only took 12 years!  I thought I would get it this year but didn't think it would be my first race of the year, only training for about 5 weeks. I really hope this means I'll see some great times in 2009, especially once I get my mileage up.

Mile 1: 6:11- Felt really good, I could have gone faster but knew I shouldn't.

Mile 2: 6:30- 1/2 mile of slight uphill. I knew it was going to slow me down. Worried me a bit because I knew I didn't have much time to spare. Felt pretty hard.

Mile 3: 6:14- Felt OK, not great. Slight downhill for a little while so I was able to push it.

Overall I am happy with how I raced. I knew the second mile would be the breaking point, and I am glad I was able to keep it together. It was a tough race and I definitely pushed myself.

For placing second in my age group I got 2 boxes of girl scout cookies! I went for samoas and thin mints. I also got a box of the lemon chalet creams when I registered. I already ate some of the cookies and a pizza buffet to celebrate!

I plan on running next weekend hard if the course is somewhat flat and the weather is nice. Would like to go for 19:45. I want to run under 19:30 at Palace Saloon in April.

Here I am finishing up!

From montelepsy on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 12:43:04

Nice job on the run! I do question your choice of cookies, though. Tagalongs are far superior.

From josse on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 15:24:18

Great job, I think the 5k distance is tough. Way to get that goal.

From rockness18 on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 15:41:32

Awesome run...under 20 minutes is quite an accomplishment.

From Marion on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 17:42:21

CONGRATULATIONS!!! You did SO awesome! I am so proud of you! Enjoy those cookies. You deserve them. I wish you were closer, I am making tamales as soon as I can get my bum off of the sofa!

From Burt on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:05:34

I disagree Mike. Thin Mints are the right choice.

So great job on the sub 20 and great job on the cookie selection...!

From Marion on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:17:47

Which ones have the peanut butter?

From kelsey on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:31:49

Thanks everyone! I really feel like there's a weight off my shoulders getting under the 20 minute mark.

As for the cookies, growing up I over did it on the Thin Mints and Tagalongs (the peanut butter ones, Marion), which is why I got the lemon creams when I registered. They're pretty good. Then for my prize everyone was telling me to try Samoas. I probably should have gone with Tagalongs instead. Moral of the story- stick with the old faithfuls- Thin Mints and Tagalongs.

Too bad I didn't win, she got 5 boxes!!

From Marion on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:35:06

OK- thin mints used to be #1- now I have converted to the tag-a-longs. I am a peanut butter fiend, as my 5 year old is deathly allergic. You always crave what you can't have :)

From kelsey on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:55:11

It looks like we're all in agreement then- Thin Mints and Tagalongs rock!!

From Burt on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 22:01:29

It may be a weight off your shoulders, but keep eating those cookies and you know where that weight will go...

From kelsey on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 23:05:49

haha, so true. and you can imagine how hard it is to sit around knowing those cookies are in my kitchen!

From barry on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 23:33:35

Congratulations, that is awesome! I see some more PR for you this year.

From ChrisM on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 11:53:36

Well done on getting the sub 20 minutes - I can remember myself trying to (and eventually running) a sub 20! Enjoy the prize you got for getting second. ONce you get more miles in and race a couple more 5ks I'm sure you'll see your times come down

From MichelleL on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 16:35:35

Hey great job! That's a hard barrier to break. Any cookie with chocolate sounds good to me.
